Chapter 6: The Custody Agreement

I couldn’t breathe.

I stared at the words on the page.

*Transfer of custody agreement.*

Those words didn’t belong in my life.

Not in my birthday memories.

Not in my family.

Not next to my name.

“What is this?””

My voice barely came out.

Elena looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“It’s the document Diane never wanted you to see.””

Mom took a step forward.

“Elena.””

“No.””

Elena’s voice became stronger.

“She’s ten years old. She deserves the truth.””

I looked at Mom.

“Is it real?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

My heart sank.

“Mom?””

She sat down.

“Maya…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Please don’t say you didn’t want to hurt me. Everyone says that when they hide things.””

Lily immediately grabbed my hand.

“I’m here.””

I looked at her.

At least one person had always been honest with me.

Elena sat across from us.

“When you were born, there was a custody dispute.””

I frowned.

“But I was a baby.””

“I know.””

“So how could there be a custody dispute?””

Elena looked at Mom.

Then back at me.

“Because Diane wanted control.””

Mom whispered:

“She always did.””

Elena continued.

“She believed she knew what was best for everyone. She convinced people that your biological situation was complicated. She used the hospital mistake to create fear.””

My fingers tightened.

“And this paper?””

Elena pointed.

“Diane tried to arrange a transfer.””

I looked at the document again.

“Transfer me?””

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Mom nodded.

“She wanted you raised somewhere else.””

My eyes burned.

“Why?””

Mom’s face collapsed.

“Because she thought separating you from Lily would protect the family.””

I laughed once.

A small, broken sound.

“Protect the family?””

I looked around the room.

“The same family that let me sit in a corner wearing a trash bag?””

Nobody answered.

The silence hurt.

Elena leaned forward.

“Maya, listen to me.””

I looked at her.

“You were never the problem.””

The sentence was simple.

But I needed to hear it.

For ten years, I had wondered why Lily was always chosen first.

Why Grandma brought her special gifts but forgot mine.

Why family photos always somehow placed me at the edge.

I thought maybe I was too quiet.

Too sensitive.

Too difficult.

But the truth was worse.

Someone had decided I was less.

Not because of anything I did.

Because of a story they created before I could speak.

Lily wiped her eyes.

“I hate that you went through this alone.””

I squeezed her hand.

“You didn’t know.””

“I should have known.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I saw the way Grandma looked at you.””

She paused.

“I just thought she was mean.””

Elena looked at the papers.

“There’s more.””

Everyone turned.

More?

How could there possibly be more?

She pulled out another document.

“This agreement was never completed.””

Mom nodded.

“Because I refused.””

“You refused?””

Mom looked at me.

“Of course I did.””

My eyes filled.

“But why didn’t you tell me?””

She looked away.

“Because Diane threatened to make everything worse.””

“What does that mean?””

Mom hesitated.

Then Elena answered.

“She threatened to tell Maya that her family didn’t want her.””

My chest tightened.

“She said that?””

“Yes.””

“And you believed she would?””

Mom whispered:

“I knew she would try.””

The room went quiet.

Then my phone buzzed.

Everyone froze.

I looked down.

It was a message from an unknown number.

My stomach twisted.

I opened it.

There was only one sentence.

*Stop digging into the past, Maya. Some truths are buried for a reason.*

I looked at Mom.

She had seen the message.

And her face had turned pale.

“Who sent that?””

Nobody answered.

Then another message appeared.

This time, it included a photo.

A photo of Grandma Diane standing outside our house.

Taken only seconds ago.

Lily stepped closer.

“She’s here.””

Mom grabbed the phone.

And outside, from the darkness beyond the window…

Grandma Diane’s voice called out:

“Maya, if you want to know the truth about your birth…”

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“Come outside alone.””
