Chapter 12: Grandma’s Final Warning
The emergency light flickered on.
And there she stood.
Grandma Diane.
No smile.
No pretending.
No gentle grandmother act.
Just anger.
For the first time, I saw her exactly as she was.
A person who had spent years controlling a story.
And now someone else was holding the pages.
Dad stepped forward.
“How did you find us?””
Grandma looked at him.
“You were never good at hiding things.””
Mom moved closer to me.
“Stay behind me.””
Grandma noticed.
Then laughed softly.
“Still protecting her.””
Mom’s expression hardened.
“Yes.””
“Even after everything?””
“Especially after everything.””
Grandma looked around the room.
At the files.
The folders.
The evidence.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””
I stepped forward.
“I understand enough.””
Her eyes moved to me.
“Maya.””
I hated how she said my name.
Like she was disappointed.
“I know about the records.””
Silence.
“I know about the custody papers.””
More silence.
“And I know you chose Lily.””
Grandma’s face changed.
For a second, I saw guilt.
Then it disappeared.
“You think this is about choosing?””
“Isn’t it?””
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“This was about survival.””
I frowned.
“Whose?””
She looked around.
“Your family’s.””
Dad shook his head.
“You destroyed your family.””
Grandma ignored him.
“Maya, you don’t know what would have happened.””
“Then tell me.””
She looked at me.
Really looked at me.
And for a moment, she seemed tired.
“I was trying to prevent a disaster.””
“What disaster?””
She opened her mouth.
Then stopped.
Because she knew.
She had already said too much.
Mom noticed.
“You weren’t protecting the family.””
Grandma looked at her.
“You were always too emotional.””
“And you were always too controlling.””
The room went silent.
Then Grandma walked to the shelf.
She pulled out a small box.
My heart jumped.
“What’s that?””
She held it.
“This is why I did everything.””
Dad stared.
“Diane.””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“You deserve to know.””
Everyone froze.
Grandma opened the box.
Inside was a photograph.
Not an old baby picture.
A recent one.
Of me.
At school.
My stomach dropped.
“When was that taken?””
Grandma didn’t answer.
I stepped back.
“You were watching me?””
She looked away.
“I needed to know you were safe.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You wanted to control me.””
She didn’t deny it.
Then she pulled out another document.
“This is the truth everyone forgot.””
She handed it to me.
I looked down.
It was a medical report.
My name was at the top.
And underneath:
*Genetic compatibility results.*
My hands shook.
“What is this?””
Grandma whispered:
“The reason you were always different.””
Mom immediately stepped forward.
“Diane, don’t.””
But Grandma continued.
“Lily and Maya were never just twins.””
The room went silent.
I stared at the report.
“What does that mean?””
Grandma looked directly at me.
“It means the hospital mistake wasn’t the biggest secret.””
My heart pounded.
“What was?””
She took a breath.
Then said:
“Maya, you and Lily are not biologically related.””
Nobody spoke.
The words didn’t make sense.
Not after everything.
Not after ten years of believing we shared everything.
Lily looked at me.
“No.””
I wanted to say the same.
But Grandma wasn’t finished.
She pointed at the report.
“And that’s not even the part that would destroy this family.””
The lights flickered again.
The old building creaked around us.
Then Grandma said the sentence that changed everything:
“The person who knows the truth about your birth…”
May you like
She looked at Mom.
“…is your mother.””
