Chapter 10: The Man Behind the Secret

For a moment, nobody moved.

The photograph on Dad’s phone felt like a piece of a nightmare.

Grandma Diane.

A folder in her hand.

And beside her…

Grandpa Robert.

The man who had barely spoken during family gatherings.

The man who always sat quietly in the corner.

The man everyone described as “gentle.””

I stared at the picture.

“You’re saying Grandpa knew?””

Mom looked sick.

“I don’t know.””

Dad shook his head.

“He did.””

Everyone looked at him.

“How do you know?”” Elena asked.

Dad zoomed in on the image.

“Because that folder has the same symbol as the documents I received.””

He pulled out a paper from his jacket.

At the top was a small stamp.

A family crest.

I recognized it.

It was on old birthday cards Grandma used to send.

The Carter family symbol.

Dad pointed.

“This wasn’t just Diane’s plan.””

Mom took the paper.

Her hands trembled.

“What did you receive?””

Dad looked at me.

“An envelope.””

My heart tightened.

“Another one?””

He nodded.

“Someone mailed it to me last month.””

“Who?””

He looked toward the window.

“I don’t know.””

The room felt heavy.

Too many questions.

Too many people hiding things.

Lily crossed her arms.

“So Grandma and Grandpa worked together?””

Dad nodded.

“Your grandfather helped her.””

Mom looked hurt.

“But why?””

Dad looked at her.

“Because he believed Diane.””

Elena’s expression hardened.

“He always did.””

I looked at her.

“You knew him?””

She nodded slowly.

“Before you were born.””

That surprised me.

“You knew my grandparents?””

“Yes.””

She looked down.

“Diane was charming when she wanted something.””

Mom gave a bitter laugh.

“That’s true.””

Elena continued.

“She convinced people she was protecting the family. She said she was saving Maya from a difficult situation.””

I looked at the bracelet in Dad’s hand.

“So everyone believed I was unwanted?””

Nobody answered.

Because that was exactly what happened.

Dad sat down.

“I need to tell you something.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

His eyes filled.

“When Diane told me you were gone, I believed her for a short time.””

My chest tightened.

“A short time?””

“Yes.””

He looked ashamed.

“I was young. I was scared. I didn’t understand what was happening.””

I looked away.

Part of me wanted to be angry.

Another part understood that adults could make mistakes too.

“But you came back.””

He nodded.

“I did.””

“When?””

“Two months later.””

“And?””

His face changed.

“She told me your mother moved away.””

Mom whispered:

“She never moved.””

Dad nodded.

“I know that now.””

He looked at me.

“I searched.””

The word sounded painful.

“I searched for years.””

The room went quiet.

Then Lily noticed something.

“Wait.””

She pointed at the photo.

“Why would they take a picture together?””

Nobody answered.

Until Elena stood.

“Because they wanted someone to know.””

We looked at her.

“What?””

She walked closer.

“Think about it. If Diane wanted this secret hidden forever, she wouldn’t keep evidence.””

Mom frowned.

“Then why leave the folder?””

“Because she was sending a message.””

“To who?””

Elena looked at me.

“To Maya.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Why would she want me to find it?””

Elena’s voice became quiet.

“Because Diane has always believed she was right.””

That was the part that scared me.

Not that Grandma had done something cruel.

But that she might truly believe she was protecting me.

Dad looked at the picture again.

“There’s something else.””

“What?””

He zoomed in on the folder.

A corner was visible.

There was writing.

Only a few letters.

But enough.

Mom leaned closer.

Then her face changed.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

She whispered:

“Adoption review.””

My stomach dropped.

“Another one?””

Dad nodded.

“This one is recent.””

“How recent?””

He looked at the date.

“Two weeks ago.””

The same week Mom bought our birthday dresses.

The same week Grandma started acting strange.

I felt a chill.

“She was planning something.””

Nobody disagreed.

Then Dad’s phone buzzed.

Everyone froze.

A new message.

He opened it.

His face immediately went pale.

“What?””

He turned the phone around.

The message was short.

*You found the documents. Now you’ll find the reason.*

Below it was an address.

An abandoned building across town.

Mom stood.

“No.””

Dad looked at her.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“I know that place.””

“Where?””

Her voice dropped.

“That’s where Diane kept all the old family records.””

I looked at the address.

The secret wasn’t finished.

May you like

It had only opened another door.

And someone wanted us to walk through it.
