Chapter 13: The Truth Mom Buried
The room went silent.
Not the kind of silence that comes after an argument.
The kind that comes when everyone is waiting for one person to speak.
Mom.
I looked at her.
She looked like she had been carrying a heavy weight for years, and now Grandma had dropped it in the middle of the room.
“Mom?””
She closed her eyes.
“Maya…”
My chest tightened.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Please don’t tell me everyone was right.””
Mom immediately stepped toward me.
“No.””
“Then tell me what she means.””
Grandma stood nearby, watching.
Waiting.
Like she wanted to see the damage.
Mom looked at her.
“You don’t get to do this.””
Grandma smiled slightly.
“Do what?””
“Use the truth as a weapon.””
A strange expression crossed Grandma’s face.
“You still think you’re the hero.””
“No.””
Mom’s voice trembled.
“I know I’m the person who made mistakes.””
That surprised me.
Because I had expected her to deny everything.
Instead, she looked at me.
“I should have told you sooner.””
My eyes filled.
“About what?””
She took a deep breath.
“About the day you were born.””
Everyone listened.
Even Grandma.
Mom sat down slowly.
“I was there when you and Lily were born.””
I frowned.
“But Grandma said—”
“Grandma lied.””
Mom looked at me.
“She always changed the story depending on what she needed.””
She picked up the medical report.
“When you were born, there was confusion because two babies were delivered around the same time.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
“But the hospital mistake was corrected.””
Elena stepped forward.
“Then why the genetic report?””
Mom looked at her.
“Because there was another truth.””
My heart raced.
“What truth?””
Mom looked down.
“When the hospital corrected the records, they discovered that the two babies had different biological parents.””
Lily grabbed the edge of the table.
“So Grandma was right?””
Mom shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
“She was right that Maya and Lily aren’t biological twins.””
I felt the words hit me.
But then Mom continued.
“But she was wrong about everything else.””
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
Mom turned to me.
“Maya, you were never an accident.””
The room became still.
“You were never unwanted.””
She reached for my hand.
“You were chosen.””
I didn’t understand.
“Chosen?””
Mom nodded.
“When the hospital discovered the mistake, they found that you were actually Elena’s biological child.””
Elena lowered her head.
“And Lily?””
Mom looked at her.
“Lily was mine.””
My sister looked confused.
“But Mom…”
Mom turned to her.
“You are my daughter too.””
Lily’s eyes filled.
“Then how did we become twins?””
Mom gave a sad smile.
“Because life was complicated.””
She explained slowly.
After Elena gave birth, she struggled financially and emotionally. She loved me, but she didn’t have support.
Mom had been her closest friend.
They had met years before.
“When Diane found out about the situation, she convinced everyone she could fix it.””
Elena whispered:
“She said she would help us.””
Mom nodded.
“But Diane didn’t help.””
“She controlled everything,” Dad said.
Mom looked at him.
“Yes.””
She continued.
“She convinced Elena that Maya would have a better life with me.””
Elena wiped her tears.
“I believed her.””
“And she convinced me that Elena didn’t want to be involved.””
I looked at Elena.
“She did want me?””
Elena looked at me.
“Every day.””
That answer broke something inside me.
Because for years, I thought I had been abandoned.
But I hadn’t.
I had been separated.
By someone else.
Grandma suddenly laughed.
Everyone looked at her.
“You all act like I’m the villain.””
Dad stared.
“You manipulated everyone.””
“I protected this family.””
“No.””
Grandma pointed at me.
“I protected Maya.””
I stepped back.
“How?””
Her voice became emotional.
“Because I knew what would happen if the truth came out.””
“What would happen?””
She looked at Lily.
Then at me.
“Everything would be divided.””
Mom frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Grandma said nothing.
Dad walked closer.
“Say it.””
Finally, Grandma whispered:
“The inheritance.””
Nobody moved.
She continued.
“The Carter estate wasn’t just money.””
Mom’s face changed.
“What did you do?””
Grandma looked at her.
“I made sure it stayed with the correct bloodline.””
My stomach dropped.
“You treated me badly because of money?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Because I knew the truth would destroy everything.””
Then she looked at Lily.
“And Lily was never supposed to know either.””
Lily stepped forward.
“Know what?””
Grandma looked at her.
“That you were never the child chosen by the inheritance.””
The room went silent.
Lily’s face went pale.
“What?””
Grandma opened another folder.
Inside was a document.
She placed it on the table.
“This is what your parents never showed you.””
I looked down.
At the top was a title.
*Final Beneficiary Agreement.*

And below it was one sentence.
*The inheritance belongs only to Maya Rose Carter.*
