Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew My Secret
Mom didn’t move.
For several seconds, she just stood there staring at the door.
The woman outside knocked again.
“Maya, please. I know you’re inside.””
Lily looked at me.
“Mom?””
But Mom didn’t answer.
She walked toward the door slowly.
Her hand reached for the lock.
Then stopped.
I had never seen my mother afraid of anything.
Not storms.
Not emergencies.
Not difficult conversations.
But she was afraid now.
“Mom,” I said quietly.
She looked back at me.
“I’m sorry.””
Those two words scared me.
Then she opened the door.
A woman stood on the porch.
She looked to be around Mom’s age.
Her dark hair was tied back, and rain drops covered her jacket. She held an old folder against her chest.
Her eyes immediately found mine.
And she started crying.
“Oh my God.””
I stepped back.
I didn’t know her.
But she looked at me like she had been searching for me forever.
“Maya,” she whispered.
Mom stepped between us.
“Elena, you shouldn’t be here.””
The woman looked hurt.
“I had to come.””
“You promised you wouldn’t.””
“I promised I wouldn’t interfere until the truth was safe.””
Her eyes moved toward me.
“Is she safe now?””
Nobody answered.
Lily crossed her arms.
“Who are you?””
The woman looked at her.
Then at me.
“I’m Elena.””
She took a shaky breath.
“I’m your biological mother.””
The room went silent.
I felt like the floor disappeared.
“No.””
The word came out before I could stop it.
Elena’s face broke.
“I know this is a lot.””
“No.””
I stepped back again.
“You can’t just show up and say that.””
“Maya—”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“I have a mother.””
I pointed at Mom.
“She’s my mom.””
Mom immediately came beside me.
“Yes.””
Her voice was firm.
“She is.””
Elena nodded.
“I know.””
She wiped her tears.
“I never came to replace her.””
“Then why are you here?””
Elena opened the folder.
“Because Diane found out something before you did.””
Mom’s expression changed.
“What?””
Elena pulled out documents.
“The hospital records.””
Mom walked closer.
“What are those?””
“Proof.””
Elena handed them over.
Mom scanned the pages.
Her face slowly changed.
“What?””
I watched her.
“What does it say?””
Mom didn’t answer.
Elena looked at me.
“It says the hospital mistake was corrected.””
I already knew that.
But then she continued.
“The records showed that Lily and I were not the only connection.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Elena looked down.
“When the hospital discovered the mistake, they found something else.””
A cold feeling settled in my stomach.
“What?””
Elena looked at Mom.
“Tell her.””
Mom shook her head.
“No.””
“Maya deserves to know.””
I looked between them.
“Know what?””
Elena took a breath.
Then she said:
“Diane didn’t just hate you because she thought you weren’t related to your family.””
My hands went cold.
“Then why?””
Elena looked at the folder.
“Because she knew exactly who you were.””
Nobody spoke.
The rain tapped against the windows.
Lily stepped closer to me.
“What are you saying?””
Elena looked at me.
“When the hospital records were corrected, Diane discovered that you were the child she had been searching for.””
I stared.
“Searching for?””
“Yes.””
“Why would my grandmother search for me?””
Elena’s eyes filled with sadness.
“Because before you were born, Diane made a decision that changed all of our lives.””
Mom grabbed the papers.
“Stop.””
Elena looked at her.
“You can’t protect her forever.””
I looked at Mom.
“What decision?””
Mom looked away.
And that hurt more than anything.
Because I realized she knew.
She had known there was something hidden.
The birthday party.
The dress.
The favoritism.
It wasn’t random.
It was a secret.
A secret everyone knew except me.
Elena reached into the folder again.
She pulled out one final piece of paper.
“This is the reason Diane treated you differently.””
I stared at the document.
“What is it?””
Elena handed it to me.
At the top was a hospital stamp.
Below it was a name.
Not mine.
Not Lily’s.
Someone else’s.
May you like
And underneath that name was a sentence that made my entire body freeze.
*“Transfer of custody agreement.””*
