Chapter 9: The Last Secret My Father Left Behind

Nobody moved.

The man standing in the doorway looked exactly the same as he did at my father’s funeral.

Calm.

Respectable.

The kind of person everyone trusted without question.

Thomas Walker.

My father’s closest friend for more than thirty years.

He had stood beside our family during the hardest moments.

He had held my shoulder after the funeral.

He had told me, “Your father was proud of you.””

Now he was standing in my house saying the one thing I never expected to hear.

“My father didn’t die by accident.””

The room felt smaller.

I looked at Evelyn.

She looked away.

That told me everything.

“You knew?””

Evelyn slowly nodded.

“I suspected.””

My anger returned.

“You suspected?””

I stepped toward her.

“And nobody thought I deserved to know?””

Thomas walked farther into the room.

“You’re emotional right now.””

I turned toward him.

“Emotional?””

My voice echoed.

“You spent years pretending to be my father’s friend while hiding the truth about his death.””

Thomas remained calm.

Too calm.

That was what scared me.

“Ethan, your father made enemies.””

“My father was a businessman.””

“No.””

Thomas shook his head.

“Your father was a man who discovered people were willing to destroy others for money.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You knew about the property.””

Thomas glanced at him.

“I knew everything.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“You were the one who contacted Marcus.””

Thomas smiled slightly.

Finally.

The mask slipped.

“I gave people opportunities.””

I stared at him.

“You ruined my family.””

Thomas looked at me.

“No.””

He pointed toward the room.

“Your family ruined itself.””

Maya stepped forward.

“Why?””

Thomas looked at her.

“You were always the problem.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas laughed quietly.

“Maya was supposed to report everything she discovered.””

I looked at Maya.

She looked hurt.

“I never worked for him.””

Thomas ignored her.

“Your father knew he was surrounded by people he couldn’t trust.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Thomas, stop.””

He looked at her.

“You knew the truth too.””

The silence was immediate.

I looked between them.

“What is he talking about?””

Evelyn’s face became serious.

“I made mistakes.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She lowered her eyes.

“Your father asked me to investigate someone close to him.””

“Who?””

She looked directly at Thomas.

Him.

I felt my stomach drop.

Thomas smiled.

“Very dramatic.””

Maya whispered:

“You were the one who tried to access the property documents.””

Thomas looked at her.

“And you were the one who ruined my plan.””

I stepped between them.

“Enough.””

Everyone became quiet.

I looked at Thomas.

“My father trusted you.””

Thomas’ expression changed.

For the first time, something real appeared.

Anger.

“Your father made one mistake.””

“What?””

“He thought loyalty mattered more than power.””

The words hung in the air.

Thomas continued.

“He built something valuable. Something people wanted. Then he decided his son should have it.””

He looked at me.

“And I spent thirty years helping him build it.””

I stared.

“So you think you deserve it?””

“I think I earned it.””

That sentence told me everything.

I finally understood.

This was never about a document.

Or a contract.

Or a property.

It was about someone who believed they were owed something.

Thomas stepped closer.

“Your father left you everything because you were his favorite.””

My jaw tightened.

“He loved us both.””

“No.””

Thomas smiled.

“He trusted you.””

A cold silence followed.

Then Daniel suddenly spoke.

“I never wanted this.””

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel stepped forward.

“I made mistakes. I was desperate. But I never wanted Dad hurt.””

Thomas looked annoyed.

“Quiet.””

Daniel ignored him.

“Ethan, there’s something else.””

I looked at my brother.

“What?””

Daniel reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small recorder.

“I found this in Dad’s office before Marcus did.””

Thomas’ face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“What is that?””

Daniel pressed a button.

My father’s voice filled the room.

“If you are hearing this, Thomas has probably already shown his true intentions.””

Thomas froze.

The recording continued.

“I know you believe you deserve what I built.””

A pause.

“But you forgot something.””

My father’s voice became stronger.

“You helped me build it because I trusted you.””

Everyone stared at Thomas.

Then my father said:

“The person who betrays you is usually the person who believes they are entitled to your success.””

Thomas’ expression hardened.

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Thomas slowly reached into his jacket.

Evelyn noticed first.

“Thomas.””

His hand stopped.

But his eyes stayed locked on me.

“You have no idea what your father left you.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

He smiled.

“Because the property was never the real inheritance.””

The room went silent.

Maya looked confused.

Daniel frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Your father left you something that could destroy everyone involved.””

My heart started racing.

“What?””

Thomas smiled.

“The original records.””

A pause.

“The ones proving who really owns everything.””

Then he turned toward the door.

“And they’re not where you think.””

Before anyone could stop him, he walked away.

But as he reached the doorway, he stopped.

Without turning around, he said:

“Ask your mother.””

May you like

My blood froze.

Because my mother had been dead for twenty years.
