Chapter 1: The Door I Wasn’t Supposed To Open

I used to think the most painful betrayal was discovering someone had lied to you.

I was wrong.

The most painful moment was realizing they had smiled at you while they were already planning the moment you would walk away.

That morning started like every other morning in our house.

The smell of coffee filled the kitchen. Sunlight came through the windows. My wife, Maya, stood near the front door wearing my favorite blue sweater, the one she always stole from my closet.

For a few seconds, everything felt normal.

She wrapped her arms around me and rested her head against my chest.

“Be careful today, baby,” she whispered.

I smiled and kissed her forehead.

“I will. I’ll see you tonight.””

She looked up at me with those same warm eyes I had fallen in love with years earlier.

“Promise?””

“Promise.””

I grabbed my keys, stepped outside, and walked down the driveway.

Maya stayed in the doorway, waving at me.

I turned around once.

She was still smiling.

I smiled back.

I had no idea that would be the last time I looked at my wife and believed she was happy to see me leave.

Across the street, our neighbor Marcus stood near the fence.

He looked like he was casually checking something on his phone, but when I passed by, I noticed his eyes followed me.

I didn’t think much of it.

Marcus had lived next door for almost two years. He was friendly enough. He helped carry heavy boxes when we moved in and always waved whenever we crossed paths.

I never imagined he was the person standing closest to my marriage falling apart.

I walked halfway down the block before reaching into my pocket.

My hand froze.

My phone wasn’t there.

“Damn it.””

I checked my other pocket.

Nothing.

I looked back toward the house.

The easiest thing would have been to keep walking and come back later.

But my phone had my work contacts, my schedule, everything.

So I turned around.

As I got closer, something felt strange.

The front door was closed.

That bothered me.

Maya always left it slightly open when she stood outside saying goodbye.

I slowed down.

“Why did she close the door?””

I stepped onto the porch quietly.

That was when I heard it.

A laugh.

Maya’s laugh.

But it wasn’t the kind of laugh she gave when watching a funny movie or talking with a friend.

It sounded different.

It sounded secret.

I stood completely still.

Another voice answered.

A man’s voice.

My stomach tightened.

For a second, my brain refused to understand what I was hearing.

Maybe someone stopped by.

Maybe a neighbor came over.

Maybe there was some explanation.

I reached for the doorknob.

My hand hovered there.

Then I heard Marcus.

“You’re sure he’s gone?””

My blood ran cold.

Maya answered immediately.

“He’s gone.””

Her voice was calm.

Comfortable.

Like this was something they had done before.

I slowly opened the door.

Just enough to see inside.

Marcus stood in my living room.

My living room.

The place where Maya and I had celebrated birthdays, watched movies, and planned our future.

He looked completely relaxed.

Maya stood beside him.

Smiling.

Not nervous.

Not surprised.

Smiling.

I pushed the door open.

The sound made both of them turn.

Maya’s face changed instantly.

The color drained from her cheeks.

“Ethan?””

Marcus stepped back.

“Wait…”

I stared at my wife.

The woman who had kissed me goodbye minutes earlier.

The woman who had told me she loved me.

“Why is he here, Maya?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Marcus looked away.

That hurt more than anything.

Because guilt looked different from surprise.

Guilt meant they knew exactly what they were doing.

I looked between them.

“How long?””

Maya swallowed.

“Ethan, please let me explain.””

“How long?””

The silence answered before she did.

I felt something inside me break.

Then Marcus reached toward the coffee table and picked something up.

Something that made my heart stop.

My phone.

The phone I had been searching for.

Marcus held it in his hand.

And he smiled slightly.

“I think you should know something before you walk out…”

I stared at him.

“What?””

He looked at Maya.

Then back at me.

“Your wife didn’t just invite me over today.””

May you like

He paused.

“She’s been asking me to come here for months.””
