Chapter 5: The Man My Father Buried

I knew that face before my mind could accept it.

For a few seconds, I convinced myself I was wrong.

The person standing outside Evelyn’s office couldn’t be who I thought he was.

Because that person had been gone for years.

My father had told me he was gone.

Everyone had.

Evelyn slowly stood beside me.

Her expression wasn’t surprise.

It was fear.

“Ethan,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“Who is that?””

She didn’t answer.

That was when I knew.

She knew exactly who was standing outside.

The office door opened.

A man stepped inside.

Older than I remembered.

Gray hair.

Tired eyes.

But the same face I had seen in old family photos.

My uncle.

Richard Carter.

My father’s younger brother.

I couldn’t move.

“Uncle Richard?””

He looked at me.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then he sighed.

“I was hoping you wouldn’t have to find out this way.””

I felt anger rise through the shock.

“Find out what?””

Richard looked at Evelyn.

She avoided his eyes.

That made everything worse.

“You’re alive.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because nothing about my life made sense anymore.

“My father held a funeral for you.””

Richard looked down.

“I know.””

“You let your family believe you were dead.””

“I had no choice.””

I stepped closer.

“Everyone has a choice.””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t know what your father was protecting you from.””

I pointed toward Evelyn.

“Then explain why everyone around me has been lying.””

Silence.

Richard looked at the documents on the desk.

Then at the envelope.

“Did you open it?””

“No.””

“Good.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

“Because your father wanted you to hear the truth from someone who knew what happened.””

I crossed my arms.

“And you expect me to trust you?””

Richard didn’t respond immediately.

Then he reached into his coat and pulled out an old photograph.

He placed it on the desk.

It was my father.

Richard.

And another person standing beside them.

A man I recognized.

Marcus’ father.

My stomach tightened.

“What is this?””

Richard looked at the picture.

“Before Marcus was your neighbor, before he became your wife’s friend, before all of this…”

He tapped the photo.

“Our families were partners.””

I stared at him.

“In what?””

“The property.””

Evelyn finally spoke.

“Your father discovered that the original agreement had been manipulated.””

Richard nodded.

“And someone wanted that land badly enough to destroy anyone who got in the way.””

I looked at him.

“Someone like Marcus?””

Richard’s expression changed.

“Marcus is only a piece of the puzzle.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Then who is the person behind all of this?””

Richard looked at the door.

As if he was afraid someone might hear.

“Your father trusted the wrong person.””

I waited.

“Who?””

Richard looked directly at me.

“Your mother.””

The room went silent.

My mother had died when I was young.

The idea felt impossible.

“That’s not possible.””

Richard didn’t blink.

“Your father never told you everything about your family.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“He wanted to protect you.””

I grabbed the edge of the desk.

“My whole life has been people protecting me by lying to me.””

Richard looked at me.

“I know.””

That answer somehow made me angrier.

“You know?””

I stepped toward him.

“My wife betrayed me. My brother tried to sell my father’s property. My neighbor was involved. And now you show up after pretending to be dead.””

Richard accepted the anger.

Maybe because he knew I deserved to feel it.

Then his phone buzzed.

He checked the screen.

His face immediately changed.

“What?””

Evelyn noticed.

“What happened?””

Richard looked at me.

“Maya is in danger.””

Everything stopped.

“What?””

He turned the phone toward us.

A message appeared.

One sentence.

“Tell Ethan the truth, and she pays for it.””

My heart dropped.

I grabbed my phone and called Maya.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

I looked at Richard.

“Who sent that?””

He stared at the message.

Then quietly said:

“The same person who knew your father’s secret before anyone else.””

“Who?””

Richard looked at me.

May you like

And his answer made my blood run cold.

“Your brother.””
