Chapter 8: The Final Betrayal

The photograph fell onto the table.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone in that room was trying to understand the same impossible thing.

I picked it up.

My fingers went cold.

The picture showed Marcus standing beside someone.

Someone who had spent the last few days acting like they were helping me uncover the truth.

Evelyn.

My eyes moved from the photograph to the woman standing across from me.

“What is this?””

Evelyn didn’t panic.

That was the worst part.

She looked calm.

Almost prepared.

Daniel stepped back.

“You knew?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“I knew more than you did.””

My stomach tightened.

“Maya?””

She looked at me.

“I didn’t know.””

That answer sounded honest.

For once, I believed her.

I looked back at Evelyn.

“You were the one who called me.””

“Yes.””

“You warned me about the envelope.””

“Yes.””

“You led me here.””

“Yes.””

I held up the photograph.

“Then why are you standing next to Marcus?””

Evelyn took a slow breath.

“Because I was trying to get close enough to find out what he knew.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“That’s convenient.””

Evelyn ignored him.

“Your father didn’t trust anyone after what happened.””

“Not even you?””

She looked away.

“That’s why he created a second plan.””

I frowned.

“What second plan?””

She walked toward the table.

“Your father knew the property would become a target. He also knew people would fight over money.””

She pointed at the key Maya found.

“That key doesn’t open a door.””

I looked at it.

“Then what does it open?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“The truth.””

She pulled out an old device from her bag.

A small storage drive.

“Your father recorded everything.””

My heart raced.

“Everything?””

“Yes.””

She placed it on the table.

“Every conversation. Every transaction. Every person involved.””

Daniel stared.

“Why didn’t you show this before?””

“Because I needed to know who was still loyal.””

His face hardened.

“You tested us?””

“No.””

Evelyn looked at me.

“I protected Ethan.””

The words bothered me.

Because they sounded exactly like everything everyone had been saying.

Protect.

Protect.

Protect.

I stepped back.

“I’m tired of being protected.””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at all of them.

“My whole life, people have made decisions for me.””

I pointed toward the drive.

“If there’s something on there, I watch it.””

Evelyn hesitated.

Then nodded.

“Okay.””

She connected the device.

The screen showed my father sitting at his desk.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

My chest tightened.

I had not seen him move in years.

His voice filled the room.

“If you’re watching this, it means my plan failed.””

Everyone became still.

My father continued.

“I need you to understand one thing.””

He looked directly into the camera.

“Ethan, the person who betrayed you is not the person you think.””

My eyes moved toward Maya.

She looked devastated.

Then my father continued.

“Your wife is not your enemy.””

I froze.

Maya covered her mouth.

Daniel looked shocked.

The video continued.

“She was the only person who agreed to help me protect you.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

All this time.

All the pain.

All the anger.

I had believed the wrong story.

Then my father said the next sentence.

“But there is someone closer to you than Marcus.””

The room went silent.

My father leaned closer to the camera.

“Someone who has been moving pieces around for years.””

The video glitched.

Then one final image appeared.

A bank transfer.

A name.

A person receiving money from Marcus.

I stared at the screen.

Because the name was impossible.

My own brother.

Daniel.

Daniel stepped back.

“No.””

His voice shook.

“That’s not true.””

I looked at him.

“Daniel…”

He shook his head.

“I can explain.””

Before anyone could respond, the lights suddenly went out.

The room became completely dark.

Then we heard the sound of the front door opening.

A voice came from the hallway.

“Ethan.””

Everyone froze.

The voice continued.

“You finally found the truth.””

A pause.

“But you still don’t know the whole story.””

The lights flickered back on.

And standing in the doorway was someone none of us expected.

My father’s closest friend.

The man who had delivered his eulogy.

The man who had told us he knew nothing.

He smiled.

May you like

And said:

“Your father didn’t die by accident.””
