Chapter 7: The Truth Maya Was Hiding

The voice behind me froze every muscle in my body.

I didn’t turn around immediately.

Because I already knew.

There were only a few people left in my life who could still surprise me.

And I was running out of people I trusted.

Slowly, I turned.

Maya stood in the doorway.

Alive.

Shaken.

Her hair was messy, and her eyes were red from crying.

For a moment, I forgot everything else.

The anger.

The betrayal.

The questions.

I only saw my wife standing there after I thought something terrible had happened.

Then reality came back.

I looked at Daniel.

Then at Maya.

“You’re okay?””

She nodded.

“I am.””

I swallowed.

“Where were you?””

She stepped inside.

“I was trying to get away.””

“From who?””

She didn’t answer.

That silence told me enough.

I looked at the video still paused on Daniel’s phone.

The image of Maya saying my father asked her to protect me.

“What does that mean?””

Maya closed her eyes.

“I wanted to tell you.””

I laughed quietly.

“When?””

She looked hurt.

“Ethan…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to say my name like everything is normal.””

Her expression changed.

Because she knew I was right.

“I should have told you years ago.””

Years.

That word hit me.

“Years?””

Daniel stood up.

“What are you talking about?””

Maya looked between us.

Then she slowly walked toward the table.

“Your father contacted me before we got married.””

I stared at her.

“My father?””

She nodded.

“He knew something was wrong.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“What did he know?””

Maya looked down.

“He knew someone inside the family was trying to take control of the property.””

Daniel stepped back.

“You knew?””

Maya looked at him.

“Yes.””

His face changed.

“How long?””

“Before you ever contacted Marcus.””

The room became silent.

I looked at Maya.

“So you knew my brother was involved?””

She nodded.

“But I didn’t know how far it went.””

“Then why stay with me?””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Because your father asked me to.””

I stared at her.

That answer should have made me feel better.

It didn’t.

“Did you ever actually love me?””

Maya looked at me immediately.

“Yes.””

No hesitation.

“I loved you before I knew anything about the property.””

“Then why hide this from me?””

She looked away.

“Because your father believed telling you would put you in danger.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone keeps saying they’re protecting me.””

My voice became quieter.

“But nobody ever trusted me enough to let me protect myself.””

Maya stepped closer.

“I was wrong.””

Those words surprised me.

Because she didn’t try to defend herself.

She didn’t make excuses.

“I should have told you. I should have trusted you.””

I looked at her.

“Then why Marcus?””

Her face changed.

That question hurt her.

“He wasn’t what you think.””

I almost laughed.

“He was in my house.””

“I know.””

“He was holding my phone.””

“I know.””

“He was waiting for me to leave.””

“I know.””

She looked at me.

“But Marcus wasn’t there because of me.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He was looking for something.””

“What?””

Maya walked toward the cabinet near the wall.

She opened a hidden compartment behind an old family photo.

My heart stopped.

She pulled out a small metal key.

“This.””

I stared.

“What is that?””

“Your father’s final protection.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Protection for what?””

Maya looked at me.

“Before your father died, he discovered someone had been searching his office.””

I remembered something.

The night before he passed away.

He had called me.

I was busy.

I ignored it.

A painful memory returned.

“He left me a voicemail.””

Maya nodded.

“Yes.””

My eyes widened.

“You knew?””

She looked down.

“He told me to make sure you listened to it only when the time was right.””

I pulled out my phone.

I had saved it.

Never deleted it.

Never listened.

My hands shook as I pressed play.

My father’s voice filled the room.

“Ethan, if you’re hearing this, something happened that I couldn’t stop.””

Everyone became silent.

His voice continued.

“Trust carefully. The person who smiles beside you may not be the person standing with you.””

I looked at Maya.

She looked hurt.

Because she knew that sentence sounded like it included her.

Then my father continued.

“But remember this…”

A pause.

“Not every secret is a betrayal.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Evelyn’s voice came from the doorway.

She had followed us inside.

“There’s one more thing your father left behind.””

I turned.

“What?””

She held a folder.

“Evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

She looked at Daniel.

Then Maya.

“Evidence that the person controlling Marcus was never Marcus.””

A chill moved through me.

“Then who?””

Evelyn slowly opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

A recent photograph.

A person standing beside Marcus.

Someone I recognized immediately.

Someone who had been pretending to help me from the beginning.

May you like

Evelyn whispered:

“The person who planned everything is someone you invited into your home.””
