Chapter 9: The Daughter They Planned to Sacrifice

I didn't believe Chloe immediately.

Not because I thought she was incapable of telling the truth.

But because she had spent months helping the people who stole Maya's invention.

Still, her warning was too specific to ignore.

I called Robert.

"We need to get to the old manufacturing plant.""

He immediately objected.

"Marcus, we have a court hearing tomorrow. Do not do anything that could compromise the evidence.""

"Daniel is planning to destroy the original prototype.""

"Then contact law enforcement.""

"I don't know whether we have enough evidence for an immediate intervention.""

Robert sighed.

"Give me twenty minutes.""

During those twenty minutes, Maya sat beside me in silence.

Finally, she spoke.

"Do you think Chloe is telling the truth?""

"I don't know.""

"She helped them.""

"I know.""

Maya looked at her hands.

"Part of me wants her to suffer the way I've suffered.""

I turned toward her.

"That's understandable.""

"But another part of me remembers when we were little.""

I waited.

Maya continued.

"She used to sleep in my room whenever she had nightmares. Mom would tell us to stop making noise, and Chloe would hide under my blanket.""

Her eyes filled.

"I don't know when she became someone who could do this.""

I reached for her hand.

"Sometimes people make choices that change who they become.""

Maya nodded.

"But I don't want to become like them.""

That was when I realized something.

Despite everything they had done to her, Maya still had something none of them possessed.

A conscience.

Robert returned with a legal officer and the private investigator.

They had arranged for an emergency preservation request to be delivered to the manufacturing plant's security department.

We drove there together.

The building was almost empty when we arrived.

Only a few lights were on.

A security guard approached the entrance.

"Can I help you?""

I showed him my company identification.

"Marcus Bennett. I need access to the prototype storage area.""

He checked his tablet.

"You're not authorized.""

I stared at him.

"Who removed my authorization?""

"Mr. Reed.""

Robert stepped forward.

"There's a pending legal preservation request. The company has been instructed not to destroy disputed materials.""

The guard looked uncomfortable.

"I'll need to contact management.""

"Do it," I replied.

He made the call.

A minute later, Daniel appeared on the security monitor.

He was wearing a dark suit.

His face showed no surprise.

"Marcus," he said through the speaker.

"You really should stop trespassing.""

"This is my company's property.""

"Not according to the current board authorization.""

"Your authority is being challenged.""

Daniel smiled.

"Then let the lawyers argue about it.""

"Where is the Aether prototype?""

"That's none of your business.""

I stepped closer to the camera.

"If you destroy it, I'll make sure every investor knows exactly what you've done.""

Daniel leaned toward the screen.

"Marcus, you still don't understand. The prototype is replaceable. The company is not.""

Then he disconnected.

Robert turned to the guard.

"We need the preservation notice delivered immediately.""

The guard looked at the tablet again.

"There's a problem.""

"What?""

"The prototype storage room was accessed twenty minutes ago.""

I felt my stomach drop.

"By whom?""

He checked the log.

"Daniel Reed and Chloe Bennett.""

Maya stepped forward.

"Chloe?""

The guard nodded.

We hurried toward the storage area.

The door was open.

Inside, several equipment cases were scattered across the floor.

One of the testing benches had been overturned.

The original silver prototype was missing.

I looked around.

"Where is it?""

The guard shook his head.

"Mr. Reed instructed the night staff to move it.""

Robert immediately photographed the room.

Then Maya noticed something on the floor.

A small metal component.

She picked it up.

"That's from the original power controller.""

I examined it.

"Can you identify where it came from?""

"Yes.""

She turned it over.

A tiny serial number was engraved on the underside.

"Every component has a unique manufacturing record. If Daniel tries to replace it, the serial numbers won't match.""

Robert photographed it.

"Good. Preserve that.""

Then we heard a noise from the corridor.

Someone was running.

The investigator moved toward the door.

A few seconds later, Chloe appeared.

Her hair was disheveled, and she was breathing heavily.

She stopped when she saw us.

"Where's Daniel?"" I demanded.

She shook her head.

"He left.""

"Where is the prototype?""

"I don't know.""

Maya stepped forward.

"You were here with him.""

Chloe looked at her.

"I tried to stop him.""

Maya's voice hardened.

"Why should I believe you?""

Chloe looked down.

"Because I recorded him.""

She took out her phone.

"I knew he was planning to blame me. So I started recording our conversations.""

She opened an audio file.

Daniel's voice filled the room.

"Once the prototype is gone, Chloe will be the only person connected to the patent fraud.""

Chloe's voice followed.

"What about Victoria?""

"She signed the documents. She can explain her own involvement.""

"And Marcus?""

Daniel laughed.

"Marcus will be too busy fighting Richard to notice that his company has already been sold.""

Then Daniel said something that made everyone go silent.

"Your mother has already agreed to take responsibility if the investigation reaches the family trust. She'll claim she acted independently.""

Chloe's breathing became uneven.

"She knows?""

"Of course she knows. Victoria has always understood the arrangement.""

Maya looked at her stepsister.

"Why did you record this?""

Chloe began crying.

"Because I realized they were going to leave me with everything.""

I stared at her.

"You helped them steal from your sister.""

"I know.""

"You lied to investors.""

"I know.""

"You signed a patent application claiming work you didn't do.""

"I know!""

Her voice broke.

"I know what I did, Marcus. I know.""

Maya looked away.

Chloe continued.

"Daniel promised me I would own the company. He said Maya would receive a settlement and everyone would move on.""

Maya turned.

"A settlement?""

Chloe nodded.

"He said you would never have to work again. That you could live comfortably while I built the business.""

Maya let out a bitter laugh.

"You thought you could buy my silence?""

"I didn't think it through.""

"No. You thought I was stupid.""

Chloe wiped her face.

"I was jealous.""

The room fell silent.

She looked directly at Maya.

"Everyone talked about how brilliant you were. Grandpa praised you. Marcus supported you. Mom was always worried that I would never be as successful.""

Maya stared at her.

"So you decided to take the one thing I worked for?""

Chloe nodded.

"I thought if I had your invention, people would finally respect me.""

Maya took a step backward.

"That's the saddest thing I've ever heard.""

Chloe lowered her head.

Then she handed Robert the phone.

"I'll give you everything. The recordings, the emails, the messages, the account numbers.""

Robert accepted it.

"You understand that cooperating doesn't erase your involvement?""

"I know.""

"Your statements may be used in legal proceedings.""

"I know.""

She looked at Maya.

"But I'm not letting Daniel destroy the evidence.""

For the first time, I saw genuine fear in her eyes.

Not fear of losing money.

Fear of the man she had helped.

We immediately contacted the authorities and provided the recording. The investigator also identified the vehicle Daniel had used to leave the plant.

While Robert coordinated with law enforcement, Helen called.

"Marcus, you're not going to believe this.""

"What now?""

"Richard just transferred his entire Northbridge shareholding to a new trust.""

"Whose trust?""

Helen hesitated.

"Your father's.""

I looked toward Arthur, who had remained at Robert's office.

"That makes no sense. Richard and my father have been working together.""

"There's more. The transfer was signed by Arthur Bennett this morning.""

I felt the room tilt.

"That's impossible. My father is with us.""

Helen lowered her voice.

"Marcus, someone has submitted a document claiming your father is legally incapacitated and that a representative has authority to act on his behalf.""

"Who is the representative?""

She sent me the filing.

I opened it.

The appointed representative was Richard Bennett.

But the signature authorizing the arrangement wasn't Arthur's.

It was mine.

Another forged signature.

Robert examined the document.

"This is becoming a coordinated fraud scheme. We need to secure your father's identity and challenge the appointment immediately.""

Then my phone rang.

Arthur.

I answered.

"Dad?""

His voice was barely recognizable.

"Marcus, listen carefully.""

"What happened?""

"Richard is here.""

My heart stopped.

"Where?""

"At the property.""

"Get away from him!""

Arthur breathed heavily.

"I can't. He brought someone.""

"Who?""

A door slammed in the background.

Then Richard's voice came through the phone.

"Hello, little brother.""

I froze.

Richard continued.

"I think it's time we stopped pretending this is a family disagreement.""

"Leave my father alone.""

He laughed.

"Your father and I have unfinished business.""

"What do you want?""

"Bring me Maya's original invention records. All of them. The original notebooks, the hardware keys, and the source code.""

"Why?""

Richard lowered his voice.

"Because there's something in those records that your father has been hiding from all of us.""

I stared at Maya.

Richard continued.

"Something that proves the Aether System wasn't entirely Maya's invention.""

Maya's face went white.

I tightened my grip on the phone.

"What are you talking about?""

Richard laughed softly.

"Ask your daughter where she got the first set of engineering equations.""

I turned toward Maya.

She looked confused.

Richard continued.

"Your father thinks he's protecting her. But he doesn't know what she discovered.""

"Richard, if you touch my father—"

"Tomorrow morning. The old family estate. Come alone.""

The call ended.

Maya stared at me.

"Dad, I don't understand.""

I took her hand.

"Neither do I.""

Then she slowly opened her backpack.

She removed a small notebook.

The original notebook she had used during the first months of developing the Aether System.

She flipped to the opening page.

At the top was a handwritten note.

It wasn't hers.

It was written in my father's handwriting.

*To Maya, when you're old enough to understand what I couldn't finish.*

Beneath it was a date.

A date from fifteen years before Maya had begun her engineering project.

May you like

And suddenly, the question wasn't just who had stolen Maya's invention.

It was what my father had secretly given her—and why Richard was willing to destroy our entire family to get it.
