Chapter 4: The Brother Who Was Supposed to Be Gone

For several seconds, neither Maya nor I moved.

The recording continued playing, but I barely heard it. My attention was fixed on the name displayed on the computer screen.

Richard Bennett.

My older brother.

Twelve years earlier, Richard had walked out of my life after a bitter legal dispute over our father's estate. He believed he deserved half of the manufacturing business our father had left behind. I believed he had already taken more than his share.

The argument ended in court.

I won.

Richard disappeared.

I hadn't spoken to him since.

Now his voice was coming out of my daughter's computer, discussing how to destroy everything I had built.

Maya slowly closed the audio player.

"Dad, what does he mean by the transfer?""

"I don't know.""

"Do you think Uncle Richard has something to do with the company?""

I looked at the screen.

"Apparently, he thinks he does.""

I called Helen immediately.

"Find everything you can about Richard Bennett. Current businesses, financial interests, corporate registrations, everything.""

Helen paused.

"Richard? Your brother?""

"Yes.""

"Marcus, I thought he was living in Portugal.""

"So did I.""

"All right. I'll start looking.""

I ended the call and turned back to Maya.

"Don't tell anyone about the recovered recordings. Not Victoria. Not Chloe. And especially not Daniel.""

Maya nodded.

"Are you going to confront Mom?""

I looked at her for a moment.

"No. Not yet.""

I had finally learned that the people betraying me were always several steps ahead. Confronting them without understanding their entire plan would only give them time to destroy more evidence.

That evening, I returned home carrying a small folder.

Victoria was in the kitchen preparing dinner.

She looked at me and smiled.

"You're late. I made your favorite.""

I glanced at the dining table.

Two plates.

Two glasses of wine.

Apparently, she expected a romantic evening.

"Where's Chloe?""

"She went out. Why?""

"Nothing.""

Victoria approached and adjusted my collar.

"You've been so distant lately, Marcus.""

I stepped away.

"Have I?""

She sighed.

"I know you're upset about Maya, but this cannot become a permanent family war.""

I placed the folder on the counter.

"Do you remember Richard?""

Her hand stopped moving.

Only for a second.

Then she reached for a kitchen towel.

"Your brother? Why would you bring him up?""

"Have you spoken to him recently?""

"No.""

"Are you sure?""

She looked directly at me.

"Marcus, what is this?""

I watched her face carefully.

"Nothing. I was just wondering.""

She laughed nervously.

"He's been gone for twelve years. Why would I suddenly be speaking to him?""

That answer told me more than she intended.

I had never said Richard was involved in anything.

Yet she immediately defended herself.

I picked up my keys.

"I'm going out.""

"You're not having dinner?""

"I'm not hungry.""

As I walked toward the door, Victoria called after me.

"Marcus, you cannot keep punishing everyone because Maya is having a difficult time.""

I stopped.

"Victoria, if you want to know why I'm angry, ask yourself what you did in that laboratory.""

Her expression hardened.

"You need to stop listening to that girl.""

I turned.

"She's your daughter too, Victoria. Or did you forget that?""

Victoria said nothing.

I left.

At 10:15 p.m., Helen called.

"Marcus, you need to come to the office.""

"What did you find?""

"Richard isn't in Portugal.""

"Where is he?""

"He's been living in Connecticut for almost two years. He owns a private investment company called Northbridge Capital.""

I gripped the steering wheel.

"What's his connection to Daniel?""

"That's the interesting part. Northbridge Capital acquired a substantial amount of debt connected to Bennett Innovations eight months ago.""

I pulled into an empty parking lot.

"What debt?""

"Your company's expansion loans. The ones Daniel negotiated.""

My stomach tightened.

"How much?""

"Just over twelve million dollars.""

I stared at the dashboard.

"Why didn't I know about this?""

"Because the debt was purchased through an intermediary. The original lender transferred it to a holding company, which later transferred it to Northbridge.""

"Can Richard call in the loans?""

"Under certain conditions, yes.""

I closed my eyes.

The old manufacturing expansion had been financed through several credit agreements. Daniel had assured me the terms were favorable.

Now my brother owned the debt.

"Can he take control of the company?""

"Not automatically. But if the company defaults, he could use the agreements to pressure the board and force a restructuring.""

I remembered Daniel's warning.

Half the board listens to me before they listen to you.

It suddenly made sense.

He wasn't merely trying to steal Maya's invention.

He was preparing to make me financially vulnerable.

"There's something else," Helen continued.

"Tell me.""

"Northbridge Capital has been receiving monthly payments from Aether Dynamics.""

I frowned.

"Why would Chloe's company pay my brother?""

"Because Northbridge provided the initial financing.""

I sat motionless.

My wife had helped our daughter steal an invention.

My business partner had helped execute the theft.

And my brother had financed the entire operation.

But why?

Helen answered before I could ask.

"I think Richard is trying to acquire Bennett Innovations.""

The following morning, I arranged a meeting with Robert Chen, our intellectual property attorney.

I showed him the recovered recordings and the original development records.

He listened without interrupting.

When the audio ended, he removed his glasses.

"Marcus, this is serious. But we need to separate what we can prove from what we suspect.""

"What can we prove?""

"Maya's original invention disclosure, her development logs, the recovered footage, and the communications showing unauthorized access. Those are substantial.""

"And the patent?""

"We can challenge it. We'll also seek to preserve the underlying records before anyone destroys them.""

I nodded.

Then Robert looked at me.

"There's one more thing. Have you reviewed the original corporate ownership structure?""

"Of course.""

"Then you should know who owns the controlling shares.""

"I do.""

He opened a document.

"Not according to the latest filing.""

He turned his laptop toward me.

A transfer had been recorded three months earlier.

My brother's investment company had acquired voting rights attached to a block of shares previously held in a family trust.

I stared at the document.

"That transfer wasn't authorized by me.""

Robert enlarged the signature page.

A familiar signature appeared.

Victoria Bennett.

I felt my throat tighten.

"How did she get authority to sign?""

Robert pointed to a clause in the original trust agreement.

"She was listed as an administrative trustee during your absence.""

I shook my head.

"That authority was only supposed to cover routine expenses.""

"That's what we need to establish legally.""

I stood up.

"Can she transfer voting rights?""

"Not without satisfying the trust's conditions. But the filing suggests someone believes she did.""

My phone vibrated.

An email from an unfamiliar address.

No greeting.

No explanation.

Just one sentence.

*If you want to know why your wife chose Richard, ask what happened to your father's original will.*

I read it three times.

Then I called the number attached to the message.

A woman answered.

"Mr. Bennett?""

"Who is this?""

"My name is Evelyn Carter. I was your father's personal accountant.""

I remembered Evelyn.

She had managed our father's finances for nearly twenty years before retiring.

"Why are you contacting me?""

There was a pause.

"Because your father left something in my care. And I believe your brother has finally decided to take what he was denied.""

"What did my father leave?""

Her voice dropped.

"The original will, Marcus. The one that was never presented in court.""

My blood went cold.

"What do you mean, never presented?""

"Your brother wasn't supposed to receive half the business.""

I gripped the phone.

"Then who was?""

Evelyn took a breath.

"Your father left controlling ownership of Bennett Innovations to you. But there was another beneficiary.""

"Who?""

She hesitated.

May you like

Then she said:

"Your daughter, Maya.""
