Chapter 8: The Price of Protecting My Daughter

The alarm echoed through the building.
Robert moved toward the hallway while the investigator pulled out his phone.
"Everyone away from the windows," he ordered.
I grabbed Maya's hand.
"Stay behind me.""
Arthur struggled to stand.
"There's a service exit through the basement.""
I looked at him.
"How do you know?""
"Because I designed the building.""
The alarm continued.
Somewhere outside, a car engine started.
The investigator checked the security monitor.
"Two vehicles at the front gate. Three people getting out.""
Robert looked at me.
"We need to leave now.""
Arthur led us down a narrow staircase into the basement.
The walls were lined with old cabinets containing engineering documents and company records.
At the bottom, he unlocked a steel door.
Behind it was a small office.
He turned on the lights.
And I stopped.
The walls were covered with photographs, diagrams, and documents relating to Bennett Innovations.
There were photographs of me at company events.
Photographs of Maya in the laboratory.
Photographs of Daniel meeting Richard.
My father had been watching everything.
For twelve years.
I turned toward him.
"How long have you been keeping this?""
Arthur looked ashamed.
"Since the day I disappeared.""
"You knew Daniel was betraying me?""
"I suspected him.""
"You knew Richard was involved?""
"Yes.""
"And you let this happen?""
Arthur raised his voice.
"I didn't know how far they had gone!""
Maya stepped between us.
"Then why didn't you come forward when they stole my invention?""
Arthur looked at her.
"Because Richard had threatened to expose the location where I was recovering. He said he would destroy the remaining evidence and make sure I was permanently silenced.""
Maya shook her head.
"So you chose to protect yourself.""
Arthur didn't respond.
That silence was answer enough.
A heavy bang sounded above us.
Someone had entered the building.
The investigator pointed toward the rear door.
"We need to move.""
Arthur opened a cabinet and removed a small metal case.
"This contains the original trust documents, the medical correspondence, and the full ownership records.""
I reached for it.
He pulled it back.
"There's a condition.""
I stared at him.
"What condition?""
He looked at Maya.
"The original Aether source code must be handed over to me.""
Maya's expression changed.
"Absolutely not.""
Arthur sighed.
"Listen to me. The source code contains more than the invention. It contains a security architecture that could expose every financial transaction connected to Bennett Innovations.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"Because the original prototype was designed to detect irregularities in industrial systems. Maya added an auditing function during development.""
Maya nodded slowly.
"I used a system that records unauthorized changes to the equipment configuration.""
Arthur pointed toward her.
"Exactly. If that function was expanded into the company network, it could reveal how Daniel and Richard manipulated the accounting records.""
I looked at Maya.
"Did you do that?""
She hesitated.
"I tested a version of it. But I never deployed it company-wide.""
Arthur's expression became serious.
"Then you may have more evidence than you realize.""
Before I could ask another question, the investigator shouted.
"Someone's coming down!""
We moved through the rear exit and emerged into a narrow service alley.
A black SUV was waiting.
The investigator unlocked it.
"Get in!""
We drove away just as two men appeared at the basement entrance.
Neither followed us.
But I knew they would.
An hour later, we reached Robert's office.
He immediately arranged for the documents to be copied and secured.
Helen joined us by video call.
Her expression was furious.
"Marcus, Daniel has locked me out of the accounting system.""
"Can you still access the original transaction records?""
"Some of them. But he has already started transferring company assets.""
"How much?""
"Almost two million dollars since this morning.""
I looked at Arthur.
"Can he do that?""
"Not legally.""
Robert interrupted.
"Legality isn't the same as practicality. We need emergency court protection.""
Helen opened another file.
"There's something else. Daniel has announced a press conference for tomorrow.""
I frowned.
"About what?""
"The launch of the Aether System.""
Maya stood up.
"They can't launch my invention.""
"They're planning to present Chloe as the lead inventor," Helen replied.
Maya laughed bitterly.
"Of course they are.""
I looked at my daughter.
"We'll stop them.""
But she shook her head.
"No, Dad. I want to go.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
"I want to face them.""
"Maya, this isn't safe.""
"Neither was working alone in that laboratory while everyone I trusted planned to steal my work.""
She took a breath.
"They want me to disappear. They want people to believe Chloe created something she never understood. I'm not going to hide.""
I understood what she meant.
But I wasn't prepared to let her walk into a room full of people who had already betrayed her.
Robert suggested a different approach.
"If we can establish the original development timeline and obtain an injunction before the press conference, we can challenge the presentation publicly.""
I nodded.
"Do it.""
That night, Arthur and I sat alone in Robert's office.
For the first time since I was a child, I was sitting across from my father without knowing what to say.
He looked older than I remembered.
"Marcus, I know you hate me.""
I stared at the documents.
"I don't hate you.""
He looked up.
"I don't know what I feel.""
He nodded.
"That's fair.""
I finally asked the question that had haunted me for twelve years.
"Did you ever miss us?""
Arthur's eyes filled.
"Every day.""
"Then why didn't you come home?""
He swallowed.
"Because I was a coward.""
I looked at him.
He continued.
"I convinced myself that disappearing was the only way to protect you. Then one year became five. Five became ten. And eventually, I was too ashamed to return.""
I felt anger rise in my chest.
"You could have called.""
"I know.""
"You could have sent a letter.""
"I know.""
"You could have told me the truth.""
He lowered his head.
"I know.""
For a long time, neither of us spoke.
Then he reached into his pocket and placed a small photograph on the desk.
It showed Maya as a little girl, holding a toy wrench beside him.
On the back were the words:
*She will build something greater than all of us.*
My throat tightened.
Arthur whispered, "I should have protected her.""
I didn't answer.
Because I was still trying to understand how the man who had once taught me that family meant standing together could become part of the reason my daughter was suffering.
At 11:20 p.m., Robert received a call from the court.
Our emergency application had been accepted for an expedited hearing.
The patent dispute would be reviewed.
The disputed share transfer would be temporarily restricted.
But Daniel's press conference was still scheduled.
Then Helen called again.
"Marcus, I found something in the company server.""
"What?""
"A deleted executive authorization.""
"Whose?""
"Victoria's.""
My stomach tightened.
"What did it authorize?""
Helen sent the document.
I opened it.
It was a board instruction authorizing Daniel to use company funds to acquire the remaining shares in Bennett Innovations.
The authorization had been signed by Victoria as an acting trustee.
But the date was three days before my trip to Chicago.
I looked at the bottom of the document.
There was a second signature.
Mine.
Except I hadn't signed it.
Robert examined the digital copy.
"This appears to be a reproduced signature from an earlier agreement.""
I stared at the screen.
"They forged my signature.""
Arthur slowly stood.
"Then we have our answer.""
"To what?""
He looked at me.
"Why Richard needed Victoria.""
Before I could respond, my phone rang.
It was Chloe.
I answered.
"Marcus?""
Her voice was shaking.
"Please don't hang up.""
"What do you want?""
"I need to tell you something about Daniel.""
"Go ahead.""
She began crying.
"He's planning to destroy the original Aether prototype tomorrow.""
I looked at Maya.
"Why?""
"Because it contains a hardware security key. If he can't get the source code, he wants to make sure nobody can prove where the invention came from.""
I stood.
"Where is the prototype?""
Chloe whispered:
"At the old manufacturing plant.""
"Why are you telling me this now?""
There was a pause.
Then she said:
"Because Daniel told me something else.""
"What?""
"He said once the prototype is destroyed, he'll have no reason to keep me alive.""
My blood ran cold.
"What do you mean?""
Chloe's voice dropped.
"Marcus, I think Daniel plans to blame everything on me.""
The call ended.
I looked at Maya.
For the first time, my daughter didn't look angry.
May you like
She looked frightened.
And somewhere across town, the man who had once been my closest friend was preparing to erase the final piece of evidence.
