Chapter 6: The Night My Father Disappeared From His Own Records

I spent the entire night reading every document Evelyn had sent.

The physician's letter was real. The hospital letterhead, signature, and patient identification matched the records from my father's final admission.

But there was a problem.

The official medical file contained no reference to the letter.

It had never been included in the hospital's archived records.

Someone had removed it.

At 6:00 a.m., I called Robert.

He answered with a tired voice.

"Marcus, please tell me this isn't another emergency.""

"It is.""

I explained the physician's letter and my father's handwritten note.

Robert became silent.

"Do not contact Richard about this. We need an independent medical records review.""

"I want to know whether my father was poisoned.""

"Then we need evidence, not assumptions.""

I understood.

But I also understood that someone had spent twelve years making sure I never asked that question.

At eight, Maya arrived at the office.

She looked exhausted.

"Dad, Mom called me.""

"What did she say?""

"She wants to meet.""

I looked at her carefully.

"Do you want to?""

Maya shrugged.

"I don't know. She said she has something important to tell me.""

"You're not obligated to see her.""

"I know.""

She sat down.

"But if she knows something about Grandpa, I want to hear it.""

I nodded.

We agreed to meet Victoria at a small restaurant near the river.

She was already waiting when we arrived.

Her hands were wrapped around a cup of untouched coffee.

When she saw Maya, she stood.

"Sweetheart.""

Maya didn't hug her.

"Just tell us what you know.""

Victoria sat down slowly.

For several seconds, she stared at the table.

Then she began.

"Twelve years ago, Richard came to me after your grandfather died.""

I folded my arms.

"Why?""

"He said your father had changed his will and that he needed to find the original document before you did.""

"How did he know about the will?""

"Your father had told him about the changes. Richard believed he was still entitled to half the company.""

Maya leaned forward.

"And you helped him?""

Victoria looked down.

"I didn't understand how serious it was at first.""

I laughed bitterly.

"You were helping my brother take my inheritance.""

"I was afraid of him.""

"Richard?""

Victoria nodded.

"He threatened me.""

"With what?""

She looked at me.

"With information about my first marriage.""

I frowned.

"What information?""

Victoria hesitated.

"Before I married you, I was involved in a financial dispute with my former husband's family. Richard found the records and threatened to expose them.""

I stared at her.

"So he blackmailed you.""

"Yes.""

"That explains why you helped him twelve years ago. It doesn't explain why you helped him steal Maya's invention.""

Victoria started crying.

"Because he came back.""

"When?""

Maya looked disgusted.

"And you didn't tell Dad?""

Victoria shook her head.

"Richard said he could destroy our financial security. He told me that if I helped Daniel with the company restructuring, he would make sure Chloe had a future.""

I leaned forward.

"Why Chloe?""

"Because Richard promised her a position in the new company. He said she could become the public face of Aether Dynamics.""

Maya stared at her mother.

"So you sold my future to buy hers?""

Victoria covered her mouth.

"I thought we could fix it later.""

"How?"" Maya asked.

"By giving me back eighteen months of my life?""

Victoria reached across the table.

Maya pulled her hand away.

Then Victoria said something that changed the conversation completely.

"Richard told me Daniel wasn't the real mastermind.""

I stared at her.

"Who is?""

She looked at me.

"Someone who has been controlling Daniel for years.""

"Who?""

Victoria swallowed.

"Your father.""

I almost stood up.

"My father has been dead for twelve years.""

"I know how it sounds.""

"Then explain.""

Victoria reached into her handbag and removed a small envelope.

"I found this in Richard's apartment when I went there last month. I was supposed to give it to Daniel, but I kept it.""

She placed it on the table.

Inside was a photograph.

My father was standing beside Daniel.

The picture appeared to have been taken shortly before his death.

On the back, someone had written:

*The original agreement. Never let Marcus see it.*

Maya picked up the photograph.

"Dad, look.""

She pointed to the background.

A framed document was hanging on the wall behind them.

It looked like a corporate ownership agreement.

I turned the photograph over.

The handwriting was familiar.

My father's.

But the date printed beneath the frame was impossible.

It was dated six months after his official death.

I looked at Victoria.

"Where did you get this?""

"Richard's apartment.""

"Why would he have a photograph dated after my father died?""

"I don't know.""

I took out my phone and photographed both sides.

Then I called Evelyn.

She answered immediately.

"Marcus?""

"I need you to look at something.""

I sent her the photograph.

A few seconds passed.

Then she gasped.

"Where did you get that?""

"Victoria found it at Richard's apartment.""

Evelyn's voice became shaky.

"That's impossible.""

"What is?""

"Your father was supposed to have signed that agreement before his final hospitalization. I witnessed the original.""

"Then why does the photograph show a date six months after his death?""

Evelyn didn't answer.

Instead, she asked:

"Marcus, have you ever seen your father's original death certificate?""

"Of course.""

"Not the copy issued to your family. The original hospital certification.""

I frowned.

"No.""

"Then you need to find it.""

She lowered her voice.

"Because I remember something your father told me shortly before he died. He said he was going away for a while to protect someone.""

"Protect whom?""

"I don't know. But he specifically instructed me never to assume that his estate records represented the full truth.""

The call ended.

I looked at Maya.

She was staring at the photograph.

"Dad, what if Grandpa didn't die?""

I wanted to tell her that was impossible.

I wanted to laugh at the absurdity of the suggestion.

But then I remembered the missing medical letter, the suspicious inheritance proceedings, and the photograph showing my father beside Daniel months after his supposed death.

I couldn't dismiss it.

That afternoon, Robert contacted the hospital's records department.

After several calls, he managed to locate a sealed archival reference connected to my father's admission.

The file had been restricted following a request from an attorney.

The requesting attorney's name was James Holloway.

Richard's former lawyer.

Robert asked the hospital to preserve the file while we pursued the appropriate legal process to obtain it.

Meanwhile, Helen discovered that Daniel had scheduled a private meeting with the board for that evening.

He intended to present the Northbridge acquisition proposal before our legal team could challenge the share transfer.

I immediately called the board secretary.

"Cancel the vote.""

"I'm afraid I can't, Marcus. The directors have already received the documents.""

"Then tell them I have evidence of fraudulent transfers.""

"Daniel says the matter has been reviewed by counsel.""

"Daniel is the person we're investigating.""

The secretary hesitated.

"I'll inform the directors.""

At 5:30 p.m., I received a message from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of a hospital corridor.

The image was old and slightly blurred.

A man in a wheelchair sat near the nurses' station.

His face was turned away from the camera.

But I recognized the coat.

My father's brown wool coat.

Beneath the photograph was a message.

*Your father didn't die in that hospital, Marcus. He left because someone in your family wanted him dead.*

I called the number.

It was disconnected.

A second message arrived.

This time, there was an address.

And one final sentence.

*Come alone if you want to know why Daniel has been protecting the truth for twelve years.*

I stared at the screen.

Maya noticed my expression.

"What happened?""

I showed her the photograph.

She looked at me.

"You're not going alone.""

"Maya—"

"No, Dad. They've already stolen my invention, used my future, and destroyed our family. I'm not letting them take you too.""

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered.

"Marcus," he said calmly.

"I heard you're asking questions about your father.""

My blood ran cold.

"How did you know?""

"Because you've been asking the wrong people.""

"Where is he, Daniel?""

There was a long silence.

Then Daniel spoke in a voice I had never heard before.

"Your father is alive, Marcus.""

I gripped the phone.

"Where?""

Daniel exhaled.

"And before you go looking for him, there's something you need to understand.""

"What?""

"Your father knows exactly what Victoria, Richard, and I have done.""

I couldn't move.

Daniel continued.

"He approved the plan to take Maya's invention.""

The call ended.

May you like

And suddenly, the greatest betrayal of my life wasn't coming from my wife, my brother, or even my business partner.

It was coming from the man whose name I had spent twelve years mourning.
