Chapter 7: The Father Who Was Never Dead

For almost a minute, I couldn't move.

Daniel's final words kept replaying in my head.

Your father knows exactly what Victoria, Richard, and I have done. He approved the plan to take Maya's invention.

My father was alive.

The man I had buried twelve years ago was apparently somewhere in the world, watching his family destroy itself.

Maya grabbed my arm.

"Dad, what did Daniel say?""

I looked at her.

"Your grandfather is alive.""

Her face went completely pale.

"What?""

"He says Grandpa approved the theft.""

Maya stepped backward.

"No. That's impossible.""

I wanted to believe her.

I wanted to believe that the man who taught me to ride a bicycle, who carried me on his shoulders, and who had spent his life building a company from nothing could never participate in something so cruel.

But the evidence was becoming impossible to ignore.

I called Robert and told him everything.

He was silent for several seconds.

Then he said, "Marcus, whatever happens next, do not go to that address without informing someone you trust.""

"I have to find him.""

"Then we'll do it properly.""

I sent Robert the address from the anonymous message.

He recognized the location immediately.

"That's an old property belonging to Bennett Manufacturing.""

"What property?""

"Your father's private research residence. It was sold through a holding company shortly after his supposed death.""

I frowned.

"My father had a research residence?""

"Apparently. The property records show that Northbridge Capital acquired it two years ago.""

Richard's company.

Everything led back to him.

We agreed to meet there the following morning, accompanied by a private investigator and an attorney.

But before we could leave, something happened.

Victoria called Maya.

Maya answered on speaker.

"Mom?""

"Sweetheart, where are you?""

"With Dad.""

"Please don't go anywhere with him. Richard is looking for you.""

I took the phone.

"Why is Richard looking for Maya?""

Victoria started crying.

"Because he knows you found the photograph.""

"How does he know?""

"I don't know. But he's furious.""

"Victoria, where is my father?""

She hesitated.

Then she whispered, "At the old property.""

I looked at Maya.

Victoria continued.

"Marcus, listen to me. Richard told me that if your father ever came back into your life, you must never let him speak to Maya alone.""

"Why?""

"Because he believes she has something your father needs.""

I tightened my grip on the phone.

"What does he need?""

"I don't know.""

"Victoria, stop protecting these people!""

She suddenly raised her voice.

"I am trying to keep your daughter alive!""

The line went dead.

I immediately called the private investigator.

We moved the meeting forward.

At 7:30 the next morning, I was standing outside the old research property.

It was a large stone building surrounded by pine trees. The windows were covered, and the driveway was almost completely overgrown.

A security camera moved slowly above the entrance.

Robert stood beside me.

"Are you certain you want to do this?""

"No.""

He looked surprised.

I continued.

"But I'm doing it anyway.""

The investigator approached the gate and spoke to someone through the intercom.

After several minutes, the lock clicked.

The gate opened.

We walked inside.

The building smelled of dust, old wood, and antiseptic.

There were photographs along the hallway.

My father with engineers.

My father at company openings.

My father standing beside Daniel.

And then I saw something that stopped me.

A photograph of Maya.

She was only about eight years old, sitting on my father's lap at a family picnic.

Someone had written beneath it:

*The future of the family.*

I stared at the photograph.

"Why would he keep this here?""

Robert examined the frame.

"Because he never intended to disappear permanently.""

A door opened at the end of the corridor.

An elderly man stepped out.

He leaned heavily on a wooden cane.

His hair was almost entirely white, and his face looked thinner than I remembered.

But I recognized his eyes.

My father.

Arthur Bennett.

I couldn't breathe.

He looked at me for several seconds.

Then he smiled.

"Hello, Marcus.""

I felt something inside me break.

"You...""

My voice failed.

He took one step forward.

"I know. You have questions.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Questions? I buried you.""

Arthur lowered his eyes.

"I'm sorry.""

"You're sorry?""

I stepped toward him.

"You let me stand beside an empty coffin. You let me spend twelve years believing my father was dead!""

He gripped his cane.

"I had reasons.""

"Good. Because you're going to explain every single one.""

Arthur glanced at Robert and the investigator.

"Can we speak privately?""

"No.""

I pointed toward Maya, who had arrived with us.

"She stays.""

For the first time, my father's expression changed.

He looked at her with something resembling affection.

"Maya.""

She stared at him.

"Grandpa.""

Arthur smiled weakly.

"You've grown.""

Maya's voice trembled.

"Why did you let them steal my invention?""

He didn't answer.

Instead, he walked toward a chair and sat down.

"Because I made a terrible mistake.""

I crossed my arms.

"Start talking.""

Arthur explained that twelve years earlier, he had discovered Richard was diverting money from the company. Richard had been secretly selling confidential manufacturing designs to competitors and using the profits to finance a separate business.

When Arthur confronted him, Richard threatened to destroy the company.

Then came the inheritance dispute.

Arthur had changed his will to protect the business and establish a trust for Maya.

But Richard discovered the new documents.

According to my father, Richard had also discovered irregularities in the original medical records.

"He began threatening me," Arthur said.

"He knew things about my medication, my doctors, and the hospital.""

I stared at him.

"What happened the night you supposedly died?""

Arthur looked down.

"I experienced a serious medical episode. My physician suspected someone had interfered with my medication. I survived, but Richard had already arranged for the hospital records to be manipulated.""

"How did you escape?""

"Daniel helped me.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Daniel?""

Arthur nodded.

"He arranged for me to recover in a private facility. We decided it was safer for everyone if Richard believed I was dead.""

I shook my head.

"And you never thought to tell me?""

"I was afraid Richard would hurt you.""

"So you abandoned me?""

Arthur closed his eyes.

"I thought I was protecting you.""

Maya spoke quietly.

"And what about me?""

Arthur turned toward her.

"I made another mistake.""

"What mistake?""

He hesitated.

Then he admitted that he had been following Maya's development for years through Daniel's reports.

He had learned about the Aether System before I even returned from Chicago.

I stared at him.

"You knew about her invention?""

"Yes.""

"And you approved the theft?""

Arthur looked ashamed.

"I approved the commercialization arrangement. I was told Chloe would be helping develop a manufacturing strategy.""

Maya stood up.

"That is not what happened.""

"I know that now.""

"No, Grandpa. You knew she had stolen my files. You knew my name had been removed from the patent.""

Arthur lowered his head.

Maya's voice grew stronger.

"You watched them erase me, and you did nothing.""

He reached toward her.

She stepped away.

Then Arthur said something that made me freeze.

"Because I believed the invention belonged to the family trust.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

He looked at me.

"The original trust agreement included certain technological developments created within Bennett Innovations. I believed the Aether System fell under that clause.""

Robert immediately stepped forward.

"That interpretation is legally questionable.""

Arthur nodded.

"I know.""

Maya shook her head.

"You can't own something just because you're related to the person who invented it.""

Arthur looked at her.

"No. I suppose I can't.""

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then he opened a drawer and removed a thick black folder.

"There's something you need to understand about Daniel.""

I took the folder.

Inside were financial records, private agreements, and correspondence.

One document was particularly disturbing.

It showed that Daniel had been making payments to Richard for years.

But there was another payment recipient.

A company registered under Victoria's maiden name.

I looked at Arthur.

"Why was my wife receiving money?""

Arthur's expression darkened.

"Because Victoria wasn't simply helping Richard. She was the person who introduced him to Daniel.""

I turned toward Maya.

She looked equally stunned.

Arthur continued.

"And there is one more thing. Richard isn't trying to acquire Bennett Innovations because he wants revenge.""

He placed a second document on the table.

It was a proposed ownership agreement.

The final beneficiary was not Richard.

It was Chloe Bennett.

My stepdaughter.

Arthur leaned closer.

"Richard promised Victoria that Chloe would inherit the company once the restructuring was complete.""

I stared at the document.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Helen.

*Emergency board vote completed. Daniel has been appointed interim CEO. Your access to the company systems has been suspended.*

Before I could respond, another message arrived.

This one came from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of Maya entering the building.

Beneath it were six words.

*Bring us the original Aether source code.*

I looked up.

Arthur's face had turned white.

May you like

"They know you're here.""

And then the security alarm began screaming.
