Chapter 2: The Woman Who Chose Her Daughter

I didn't sleep that night.

At two in the morning, I sat alone in my office, staring at the patent application Maya had downloaded.

Every diagram was familiar.

I had watched her draw those designs at our kitchen table. I remembered the coffee stains on the original notebook and the tiny burn mark on her sleeve from an early prototype test.

Now Chloe's name appeared on every page.

At 6:30 a.m., Maya knocked on my door.

"Dad?""

"Come in.""

She entered carrying two cups of coffee.

"I think there's something else you should see.""

She placed her laptop on my desk.

A folder appeared on the screen. Inside were dozens of emails, technical files, and meeting invitations.

"Where did you get these?""

"From the company backup server. My research folder was synchronized before the laboratory footage disappeared.""

I leaned closer.

Maya opened an email dated six weeks earlier.

The sender was Victoria.

The recipient was Daniel.

*Subject: Chloe's opportunity.*

Victoria had written:

Chloe is ready to move forward. Maya doesn't need to know about the prototype transfer until the registration is complete. Marcus will be traveling next month, so that should give us enough time.

I read it twice.

Then a second email appeared.

We need the original test recordings removed. If Maya can prove the device worked before Chloe's presentation, the entire project becomes complicated.

Daniel's reply was short.

I'll handle the technical side. Make sure Chloe understands that she must never mention Maya's name.

My hands began to shake.

"How long have you known about this?""

Maya looked down.

"About the emails? Since last night.""

"Why didn't you show me sooner?""

"Because I was hoping there was another explanation.""

She wiped her cheek.

"I wanted Mom to tell me she'd made a mistake.""

I pulled her into my arms.

"I'm sorry.""

She shook her head.

"You didn't do this, Dad.""

But I had.

Not directly.

I had allowed Victoria to access parts of the company she didn't understand. I had ignored Chloe's behavior because I wanted our blended family to work. I had trusted Daniel without questioning his decisions.

My mistakes had created the perfect environment for their betrayal.

At eight, I called an emergency meeting at company headquarters.

I invited our chief financial officer, Helen Brooks, and the head of intellectual property, Robert Chen.

I deliberately did not invite Daniel.

When Helen arrived, she noticed the tension immediately.

"Marcus, what's happened?""

I placed the patent application on the conference table.

"Someone has stolen Maya's invention.""

Robert adjusted his glasses.

"Have you filed an initial disclosure?""

"Yes. Eighteen months ago.""

"Then the documentation should establish the original development timeline.""

Maya opened her laptop.

"I have the original engineering logs, prototype photographs, testing data, and source code.""

Robert studied the records.

"These are excellent records. But we'll need to preserve everything and establish the chain of custody.""

Helen turned toward me.

"Who is responsible?""

I hesitated.

"My wife. My stepdaughter. And Daniel.""

Helen went completely still.

"Daniel Reed?""

"Yes.""

She closed the conference room door.

"Marcus, there's something you should know.""

She opened her own laptop and brought up a spreadsheet.

"For the last three months, I've noticed unusual payments leaving the company's research division. They were approved under Daniel's authorization.""

I stared at the screen.

The payments totaled nearly $740,000.

"Where did the money go?""

Helen enlarged the transaction details.

"Consulting companies. Equipment suppliers. Two newly registered businesses.""

One of them was Aether Dynamics.

I felt sick.

"Daniel used company money to fund the theft?""

"That's what the records suggest.""

Maya looked at the screen.

"So he didn't just take my invention. He used Dad's company to pay for it.""

Robert leaned back.

"If this is accurate, we may be dealing with more than an intellectual property dispute.""

I asked Helen to freeze the suspicious payments and preserve the accounting records.

Then I did something I had never imagined doing.

I called my attorney.

By lunchtime, we had arranged for an independent forensic audit and prepared formal notices concerning the disputed patent application.

But I still needed to confront Victoria.

I returned home that afternoon.

She was in the dining room arranging flowers.

She looked up and smiled.

"You're home early again.""

I placed the printed emails on the table.

Her smile disappeared.

"Where did you get those?""

"Does that matter?""

She glanced through the pages.

"Marcus, you shouldn't be reading private business correspondence.""

"Private? You're discussing stealing my daughter's invention.""

Victoria dropped the papers.

"Don't use that word.""

"What word would you prefer? Borrowing? Reassigning? Giving Chloe an opportunity?""

She stood.

"Chloe has spent her entire life feeling like an outsider in this family.""

I stared at her.

"She has never been treated like an outsider.""

"You don't understand what it's like to watch your daughter struggle while Maya gets everything handed to her.""

"Maya spent eighteen months developing that technology.""

"And Chloe spent eighteen months watching everyone celebrate Maya!""

Her voice echoed through the room.

I lowered my voice.

"Did you help Chloe enter the laboratory?""

Victoria didn't answer.

"Did you use your security credentials?""

"I was only trying to help my daughter.""

"Did you destroy the footage?""

She turned away.

I stepped closer.

"Victoria. Look at me.""

She finally did.

"I deleted some recordings.""

The words seemed to drain the air from the room.

"Why?""

"Because they showed Chloe entering the laboratory.""

I stared at her.

"And you thought that was acceptable?""

"She wasn't hurting anyone.""

"She stole a machine worth millions.""

"She was going to make it successful!""

I laughed once, without humor.

"By pretending she invented it?""

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

"Marcus, please. You know how difficult it is for Chloe to live in Maya's shadow.""

I looked toward the staircase.

Maya was standing there.

She had heard everything.

"Mom," she whispered.

Victoria turned.

"Maya, sweetheart—"

"Did you really delete the footage?""

Victoria's mouth opened.

Then closed.

Maya nodded slowly.

"Okay.""

She walked downstairs, picked up her jacket, and headed for the door.

"Where are you going?"" I asked.

"Somewhere I don't have to watch people explain why stealing from me is an act of love.""

The door slammed.

Victoria covered her face.

I didn't comfort her.

Instead, I returned to my office and called Daniel again.

This time, he answered immediately.

"Marcus, I was hoping we'd talk.""

"Good. Tell me why you approved those payments.""

A pause.

Then he chuckled.

"Because I was protecting the company.""

"From what?""

"From your daughter's unrealistic expectations.""

I gripped the phone.

"Be very careful, Daniel.""

He sighed.

"Marcus, you're emotional. I understand. But you need to consider something.

Maya created a prototype. Chloe created a commercial opportunity. Investors don't fund family feelings.""

"She copied Maya's work.""

"Prove it.""

"I have the original files.""

"Then I suggest you look more closely at the ownership documents.""

My chest tightened.

"What documents?""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"The documents you signed last spring.""

I remembered signing several corporate restructuring papers. Daniel had told me they were routine administrative updates.

"What did you put in those documents?""

He didn't answer directly.

Instead, he said:

"Meet me tomorrow morning. I'll explain everything.""

Then he added one final sentence.

"And Marcus? Don't bring Maya.""

The call ended.

I sat motionless.

Because Daniel hadn't sounded worried.

May you like

He had sounded confident.

And I was beginning to fear that stealing the invention was only the beginning.
