Chapter 9: The Truth About Sarah's Last Night
I drove to my mother's house immediately after ending the call with Mason.
Daniel was already reviewing the documents, but I couldn't sit still.
For five years, I had believed Sarah died in a tragic accident on a rainy highway.
I remembered the police officer calling me.
I remembered arriving at the hospital.
I remembered the doctor telling me there was nothing they could do.
And I remembered holding our newborn daughter while trying to understand how the woman I loved could be gone.
Now someone was telling me that it might not have been an accident.
"Daniel, I need to know everything.""
He looked up from the paperwork.
"We need to be careful. Mason may have misunderstood what Vanessa said.""
"Then let's verify it.""
My mother stood near the doorway.
"Michael, please sit down.""
I turned toward her.
"Did you ever suspect Sarah's accident was deliberate?""
She hesitated.
That hesitation told me more than any answer could have.
"Mom.""
She sat slowly.
"After Sarah died, I received an anonymous envelope.""
"What was inside?""
"Photographs of her car.""
"Show me.""
She went upstairs.
When she returned, she was holding a yellow envelope.
Inside were three photographs taken at a vehicle impound lot.
The front of Sarah's car was badly damaged.
But the most disturbing photograph showed the rear brake assembly.
A handwritten note was attached.
The mechanical failure was not accidental.
I stared at it.
"Who sent this?""
"I never found out.""
"Why didn't you give it to the police?""
My mother started crying.
"Because the letter also contained a photograph of Lily's hospital room. Someone had circled her crib.""
I felt sick.
My mother continued.
"I thought if I stayed quiet, they would leave her alone.""
Daniel took the photographs.
"These need to be examined immediately.""
I looked at my mother.
"Did you ever tell anyone?""
She shook her head.
"No.""
I stepped away.
For years, I had thought my mother was simply grieving.
Now I was discovering how many secrets she had buried.
My phone rang.
It was Detective Harris, the officer assigned to the financial investigation.
"Mr. Carter, we need to discuss some new information.""
"About Sarah?""
There was a pause.
"Yes. We located the original accident report, but there's a discrepancy between the mechanical inspection and the final insurance assessment.""
"What kind of discrepancy?""
"The vehicle had been inspected twice. The first inspection noted possible interference with the braking system. The second report classified the damage as consistent with the collision.""
"Who signed the second report?""
Detective Harris gave me a name.
I recognized it immediately.
"Victor Hale.""
"Do you know him?""
"My father did.""
The detective continued.
"We've also discovered that the company responsible for the second inspection was connected to a business owned by Rebecca Hale.""
I looked at Daniel.
He was already taking notes.
"Detective, I have a recording from my father and documents involving Rebecca. I'll send everything through my attorney.""
"Good. We may need formal statements from you and your mother.""
"Of course.""
Before hanging up, he added something.
"Mr. Carter, there's another matter. Vanessa has agreed to provide information in exchange for consideration during the investigation.""
My jaw tightened.
"What information?""
"She claims she can identify the person who arranged the original transfer of money from Lily's trust.""
"Who?""
"Victor Hale.""
I closed my eyes.
The name seemed to follow us everywhere.
After the call, Daniel made arrangements to preserve the recordings and documents.
Then he looked at me.
"Michael, I think we should speak with Rebecca again.""
I agreed.
We contacted her through her attorney.
She agreed to meet us that afternoon at her office.
When we arrived, she looked nervous.
"I heard about Vanessa," she said.
"She's cooperating with investigators.""
Rebecca nodded.
"That was always going to happen.""
I stared at her.
"Did you know Sarah's car had been tampered with?""
Rebecca's expression changed.
She sat down slowly.
"Yes.""
The room went silent.
I stepped forward.
"You knew?""
"I suspected.""
"Sarah was my wife!""
Rebecca closed her eyes.
"I know.""
"She was the mother of my daughter!""
"I know, Michael.""
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
Rebecca opened a drawer and pulled out a small envelope.
"Because I was afraid the person responsible would come after Lily.""
She placed it on the desk.
Inside was a photograph of Victor Hale standing beside a mechanic.
The date was printed on the back.
Two days before Sarah's accident.
I stared at it.
"Who is the mechanic?""
"His name is Thomas Reed. He worked for the company that inspected Sarah's car.""
Daniel examined the photograph.
"Can you prove he was involved?""
Rebecca shook her head.
"Not yet. But I have something else.""
She opened a locked cabinet.
Inside was a stack of old documents and a small digital recorder.
"Sarah gave me this shortly before she died.""
I picked it up.
"What's on it?""
"Her final conversation with Victor.""
I looked at Daniel.
He nodded.
"Let's hear it.""
Rebecca pressed play.
At first, there was only static.
Then Sarah's voice.
"Victor, I have the documents. I know what you did with my father's investment.""
A man's voice answered.
"You have no idea what you're talking about.""
"I have the original transfers.""
"You need to hand them over.""
"No.""
A chair scraped.
Then Victor's voice became colder.
"You have a baby coming. You should think about what happens if you keep interfering.""
Sarah replied immediately.
"Don't threaten my daughter.""
There was a long silence.
Then Victor said something that made my stomach turn.
"Your husband doesn't even know who his father really was.""
The recording ended.
I stared at the device.
"What did he mean?""
Rebecca looked at me.
"Your father and Victor were business partners. But there was something else.""
"What?""
She hesitated.
"Your father discovered that Victor had been using your family's company to move money through several shell businesses. Sarah found the original records.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Then why did Victor mention Michael's father?""
Rebecca looked down.
"Because Richard Carter had secretly recorded Victor admitting to the fraud.""
My mind raced.
"Where is that recording?""
Rebecca pointed toward the device.
"That was only a copy. Sarah hid the original somewhere safe.""
I looked at the envelope.
"Where?""
Rebecca's voice dropped.
"She told me she would leave it somewhere only her daughter could find.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"Lily?""
Rebecca nodded.
"Sarah said Lily would know where it was when she was old enough.""
I shook my head.
"She's five. She doesn't know anything about this.""
Rebecca reached into another drawer and pulled out a small photograph.
It showed Sarah sitting in Lily's nursery.
On the wall behind her was a framed picture of a little wooden music box.
I recognized it.
Sarah had kept that music box beside Lily's crib.
After Sarah died, I had packed it away with her belongings.
I suddenly remembered something.
The music box had disappeared when Vanessa redecorated Lily's bedroom.
I turned toward Daniel.
"Where is it?""
He frowned.
"What?""
"The music box. Sarah's music box.""
Rebecca nodded urgently.
"That's where Sarah hid the original recording.""
I pulled out my phone and called my mother.
"Mom, do you remember Sarah's music box?""
"Yes.""
"Do you know where it is?""
There was a pause.
Then my mother whispered:
"Vanessa took it.""
My blood ran cold.
"When?""
"About three months ago. She said she wanted to sell some old things from the storage room.""
I stared at Rebecca.
She looked horrified.
"Then Victor may already have it.""
My phone buzzed.
A new message appeared.
It was from an unknown number.
There was only one photograph.
The wooden music box sat on a dark table.
Beside it was a handwritten note.
You should have stopped digging, Michael.
Then another message arrived.
If you want your wife’s last secret, come alone tonight.
I stared at the screen.
Daniel reached for my phone.
"Don't respond.""
But before he could say anything else, a final message appeared.
And bring Lily.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
Whoever had sent that message knew exactly where my daughter was.
And they were no longer interested in threatening me.
May you like
They were threatening to take the only thing Sarah had spent her final days trying to protect.
Lily.
