Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Laundry Room Door

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Mason stood beside the dining table, holding his phone with both hands.

Vanessa moved toward him.

"Give me that.""

He stepped backward.

"No.""

"That's my phone plan! I pay for that device!""

"Dad bought it for me," Mason replied.

"Don't you dare talk back to me!""

I stepped between them.

"Vanessa. Sit down.""

She stared at me.

"Excuse me?""

"Sit. Down.""

For once, she obeyed.

I turned to Mason.

"Show me what you recorded.""

He glanced at Lily.

"Can she go somewhere else first?""

I looked at my daughter. She was still holding the sleeve of my jacket.

"Would you like to sit with me in the living room, sweetheart?""

She nodded.

I carried her to the couch and switched on her favorite cartoon. Then I gave her a glass of milk and the dinner roll Mason had quietly rescued from the table.

She ate in tiny bites, occasionally looking toward the dining room.

I returned to find Mason waiting.

His hands were shaking.

"How long has this been happening?"" I asked.

He stared at the floor.

"Since you started working late.""

My job as a regional construction manager had become demanding over the previous six months. Some nights I returned after eight. Other nights, nearly ten.

Vanessa had always assured me everything was fine.

She said Lily was adjusting to having a stepmother. She said Mason needed more attention because he was struggling at school.

I had believed her.

"Why didn't you tell me?"" I asked.

Mason's eyes filled.

"Because she said you'd blame me.""

"Blame you for what?""

"She told me that if Lily got hurt, you'd think I did it because I didn't like having a little sister.""

I felt sick.

Mason unlocked his phone.

"I started recording because nobody believed Lily when she tried to tell Grandma.""

"Grandma?""

"Your mom. She came over last month.""

I remembered that visit. My mother, Margaret, had mentioned that Lily seemed unusually quiet.

Vanessa had laughed and said Lily was simply tired.

"What happened when Grandma came?""

"Mom told Lily to stay upstairs. She said she wasn't allowed to come down until Grandma left.""

Mason pressed play.

The video showed a dim hallway. The camera appeared to be pointed through a partially open door.

Vanessa's voice came through the speaker.

"You're not getting anything until you learn to behave.""

Then came Lily's small voice.

"But I'm hungry.""

"Then stop crying.""

A door slammed.

The video continued for several seconds.

I heard tiny footsteps.

Then Mason's voice, whispering.

"Lily? Are you okay?""

The screen shook as someone moved closer.

My daughter's voice answered.

"I'm scared.""

Mason stopped the recording.

I couldn't speak.

"There's more," he said.

He opened another file.

This time, the video showed the laundry room. A small plastic stool sat beside the washing machine. Lily was sitting on it, her knees pulled against her chest.

Vanessa appeared in the doorway holding a bowl of food.

"Do you know why you're sitting here?"" she asked.

Lily shook her head.

"Because you don't listen. You don't get to eat with everyone when you act like that.""

Then Vanessa placed the bowl on top of the washing machine.

"That's Mason's dinner. Don't touch it.""

She left.

Lily watched the door close.

Then she looked toward the camera.

"Can I have just one?""

The recording ended.

My hands were trembling.

I looked at Mason.

"How many times?""

He wiped his eyes.

"I don't know. A lot.""

"Did you ever give her food?""

"Whenever I could.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Mason finally broke down.

"Because Mom said she'd take Lily away if I did. She said you would have to choose between your real family and her.""

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The manipulation.

Vanessa hadn't just been mistreating my daughter. She had been teaching two children to live in fear.

I turned toward the dining room.

Vanessa was standing in the doorway.

"You have no idea what it's like managing this house alone," she said.

I stared at her.

"Is that your explanation?""

"Your daughter is difficult. She throws tantrums. She refuses to listen. I have tried everything.""

"She's five.""

"Exactly! She needs boundaries.""

"Locking food away isn't a boundary.""

Vanessa's voice rose.

"You weren't here! You don't know what she does when you're gone!""

Mason stepped forward.

"She doesn't do anything, Mom. She's just a little kid.""

Vanessa spun toward him.

"After everything I've done for you—"

"You told me Lily wasn't allowed to touch your son's food," I interrupted.

"You told her she wasn't allowed to eat. You locked her in a room.""

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

"You're twisting everything.""

I took out my phone.

"Then we'll let someone else decide what happened.""

Her expression changed.

"Who are you calling?""

"Emergency services.""

She lunged toward my phone.

I moved out of reach.

"Don't you dare," she shouted.

"Stay away from me.""

"You'll destroy this family over a misunderstanding?""

I looked at the red mark on Lily's cheek, visible even from the doorway.

"You destroyed something tonight. And it wasn't our marriage.""

I called for help and requested that the children be checked by medical professionals.

While I spoke, Vanessa paced around the kitchen.

She picked up her purse.

"I'm leaving.""

"No," I said.

"You're staying here until the officers arrive.""

She laughed bitterly.

"You think you can keep me here?""

"I'm not physically stopping you. But you're not taking either child anywhere.""

She grabbed her keys.

Then she paused.

Her eyes settled on Mason.

"If you show anyone those recordings, you'll regret it.""

Mason stepped behind me.

I ended the call.

"Don't threaten him again.""

Vanessa stormed upstairs.

A moment later, a bedroom door slammed.

I went back to Lily.

She was asleep on the couch, still holding the dinner roll in one hand.

I gently took it from her fingers.

Then I noticed something.

Her shoes were still on.

When I tried to remove them, she stirred.

"Daddy?""

"I'm here.""

"Do I have to go to the laundry room tomorrow?""

My throat tightened.

"No, sweetheart. Never again.""

She looked at me for a long moment.

Then she whispered something that nearly broke me.

"Can I have breakfast tomorrow?""

I kissed her forehead.

"Anything you want.""

But before I could stand, Mason appeared holding his phone again.

"Dad, there's one more video.""

I looked at him.

"What is it?""

He swallowed.

"It's from last Tuesday. Mom didn't know I was recording.""

He pressed play.

May you like

And the first sentence Vanessa spoke made my blood run cold.

"If Michael ever finds out what happened to his daughter's savings, we're both finished.""
