Chapter 7: The Recording That Changed Everything

I didn't sleep that night.

The USB drive sat on my kitchen table beside Sarah's letter and the financial documents Daniel had collected. Every few minutes, I found myself staring at it, wondering what my father could possibly have known about Lily before she was even born.

My father, Richard Carter, had been a successful businessman. He had built a construction company from nothing, raised two children, and spent most of his life making sure our family never wanted for anything.

He had also been dead for twelve years.

Sarah hadn't even entered my life when he passed away.

So why had he left something specifically for my daughter?

At seven the next morning, Daniel arrived with his laptop.

"Have you watched it?"" he asked.

"No.""

"Good. Let's preserve the original file before opening anything.""

He connected the USB drive.

There was one video file.

The date on it was nearly thirteen years old.

Daniel clicked play.

My father's face appeared on the screen.

He was sitting behind his old office desk, wearing the navy suit he had been buried in. His hair was silver, and his hands rested on a folder.

I felt my throat tighten.

"Michael," he began, "if you're watching this, something has happened that I hoped would never happen.""

I leaned forward.

My father looked directly into the camera.

"I made a mistake with someone I trusted. A mistake that could eventually affect your children.""

He paused.

"Years ago, I invested in a private medical research company. The investment was supposed to fund a new treatment for a rare genetic condition. The company was controlled by a man named Victor Hale.""

Daniel glanced at me.

"Hale?""

I nodded.

Rebecca's surname.

My father continued.

"Victor was a persuasive man. He promised extraordinary returns. But when I discovered that the company was falsifying medical results and diverting investment funds, I withdrew my money.""

He opened the folder.

"Unfortunately, I had already signed several documents. Victor used those documents to create a network of fraudulent investments.""

My father took a breath.

"I tried to report him. Before I could, I received threats.""

The video paused briefly.

Then his voice returned.

"One of the people Victor used to pressure me was a woman named Rebecca Hale.""

I sat back.

Rebecca.

Sarah's half-sister.

My father continued.

"She was young at the time. I don't believe she understood everything she was involved in. But she had access to financial records that could expose the entire operation.""

Daniel stopped the recording.

"Michael, we need to be careful here.""

"Keep playing.""

He restarted it.

My father leaned closer to the camera.

"If Victor discovers the documents I have kept, he will try to destroy them. I have placed copies in a protected trust for my future grandchildren.""

I felt my heartbeat quicken.

"Not because they are entitled to the money," my father continued, "but because the documents may one day protect them.""

He held up a photograph.

It showed my father standing beside a young woman.

Sarah.

I recognized her immediately.

My father spoke again.

"Sarah came to me after discovering Victor's connection to Rebecca. She was frightened, but she was determined to protect her unborn child.""

My mouth went dry.

"She asked me to put everything in Lily's name. I agreed.""

The recording continued for another minute, but the final sentence was the one that changed everything.

"Michael, if someone is using Lily's inheritance to gain access to those documents, don't assume they are interested in money. They may be searching for the original evidence.""

The screen went black.

For several seconds, neither Daniel nor I spoke.

Finally, Daniel closed the laptop.

"Your father may have been involved in a financial investigation that never reached the authorities.""

I stared at the blank screen.

"And Lily's trust contains evidence connected to it.""

"Possibly.""

I stood and walked to the window.

Everything was beginning to connect.

Vanessa had taken money from Lily's account. Rebecca had been pressuring her. My mother had tried to control the inheritance. Sarah had left warnings.

But there was still one question.

"Why would Vanessa care about the original documents?""

Daniel opened the account records again.

"Because the transfers weren't random. Someone was trying to access a specific protected investment fund.""

"Can you identify the recipient?""

"Not yet.""

My phone rang.

It was Patricia.

"Michael, I wanted to update you about the children.""

"Are they okay?""

"Lily is doing well. Mason has been very helpful, but he appears frightened about returning to the house.""

"Neither child will return while Vanessa is there.""

"That's what we're recommending for now.""

I thanked her.

Then she added something unexpected.

"There's another issue. Vanessa contacted us this morning.""

"What did she say?""

"She wants to arrange a meeting with Lily.""

My blood ran cold.

"Absolutely not.""

"We won't arrange unsupervised contact. Any future communication will be handled through the appropriate process.""

"Thank you.""

I ended the call.

Daniel was watching me.

"What's wrong?""

"Vanessa wants to see Lily.""

He shook his head.

"She should be concentrating on getting legal representation.""

I looked at the laptop.

Then my phone buzzed.

An unknown number had sent a message.

Michael, I know you've watched the recording. Your father wasn't telling the whole truth. Meet me tonight if you want to know why Sarah really died.

There was no signature.

But Daniel recognized the number.

He searched it against the contact information in Rebecca's documents.

His expression changed.

"It's registered to Rachel.""

Vanessa's sister.

I read the message again.

Then another message arrived.

Come alone. If you bring your attorney, you'll never find out what happened to Sarah.

Daniel took the phone from my hand.

"You're not going anywhere alone.""

I looked at him.

"Then we'll find out who sent it.""

He nodded.

But before he could say anything else, my phone rang again.

This time, the caller ID showed my mother's name.

I answered.

"Mom?""

Her voice was barely recognizable.

"Michael, listen carefully. Vanessa is at my house.""

I stood.

"What?""

"She came here looking for the USB drive. She's threatening me.""

"Where are you?""

"In the kitchen.""

Then I heard a crash.

May you like

My mother screamed.

And the call disconnected.
