Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew Sarah's Secret

The next morning, I drove to my mother's house.

Lily was sitting at the kitchen table, eating pancakes covered in strawberries.

She had already eaten two.

When she saw me, she jumped down from her chair and ran into my arms.

"Daddy!""

I lifted her.

"Good morning, princess.""

"Grandma made me three pancakes.""

"Three?""

She nodded proudly.

"She said I could have more if I was still hungry.""

My mother, Margaret, placed another pancake on her plate.

"Children shouldn't have to earn their dinner, Michael.""

I looked at Lily.

Her cheek was still slightly swollen.

I kissed the top of her head.

"That's right.""

Mason sat at the opposite end of the table, quietly eating.

My mother touched his shoulder.

"Would you like another pancake, sweetheart?""

He shook his head.

"I'm okay.""

I noticed he was watching Lily carefully, almost as if he needed to make sure she really was allowed to eat.

"Son," I said, "you can relax. Nobody is going to take her food away.""

He nodded, but his shoulders remained tense.

After breakfast, I asked him to show me the rest of the recordings.

We sat in my mother's study.

There were twelve videos.

Some showed Vanessa shouting at Lily. Others showed the locked pantry and the laundry room.

One particularly disturbing recording showed Vanessa taking a sandwich from Lily's hands and throwing it into the trash.

"That's enough," I whispered.

Mason stopped the video.

"There's another thing.""

He opened his photo gallery.

It contained pictures of several envelopes.

"Mom kept these in her bedroom drawer. I took pictures because I thought they might help.""

I zoomed in.

The envelopes had been addressed to Vanessa by a woman named Rebecca Hale.

One was dated nearly eleven months earlier.

Another contained a handwritten message:

You have until the end of the month. I don't care how you get the money. That little girl has more than enough.

I stared at the screen.

"Did you ever hear Mom talk about Rebecca?""

"Yes. She called her last week.""

"What did they discuss?""

"Mom said something about the original papers. Rebecca said she had them.""

"What original papers?""

Mason shook his head.

"I don't know.""

I immediately forwarded the information to Daniel.

He called me within minutes.

"Michael, I think we need to locate Rebecca.""

"Can you find her?""

"I already have a preliminary address. She's listed as the director of a company called Hale Ventures.""

I searched the name.

The website showed a small investment firm operating out of a commercial building downtown.

There was a photograph of a woman in her forties standing beside a glass office door.

I recognized her immediately.

She had been at my wedding to Vanessa.

I'd assumed she was one of Rachel's business friends.

"That's her," I said.

Daniel went quiet.

"You met her?""

"At my wedding.""

"Then I suggest we arrange a formal meeting through counsel.""

I agreed.

But before we could make arrangements, my phone rang.

The caller ID displayed an unknown number.

I answered.

"Michael Carter?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Rebecca Hale. I believe you have questions about your daughter's trust.""

I looked at Daniel.

He motioned for me to put the call on speaker.

"You're Sarah's sister?""

There was a short silence.

"Half-sister, technically.""

"Why have you been contacting my wife?""

"Because your wife owes me money.""

"Seventy-four thousand dollars?""

Rebecca laughed softly.

"That's not the amount she owes me.""

My grip tightened around the phone.

"Then what is?""

"Two hundred thousand.""

Daniel leaned toward the phone.

"Ms. Hale, this is Daniel Brooks, Mr. Carter's attorney. Any financial claims should be submitted through the appropriate legal channels.""

"I know who you are, Mr. Brooks.""

"Then you understand why we need documentation.""

Rebecca sighed.

"Fine. But there's something Michael should hear before he starts accusing everyone.""

I leaned forward.

"What?""

"Your wife didn't invent the debt. Sarah did.""

I felt a familiar pressure in my chest.

"Show me proof.""

"I have bank statements. Emails. A signed agreement.""

"Why didn't you contact me before?""

"Because Sarah asked me not to.""

My mouth went dry.

"What?""

Rebecca continued.

"She told me that if anything happened to her, I should stay away from you and Lily. She said you didn't know the truth about her financial situation.""

"That's not possible.""

"Would you like to hear her voice?""

Before I could answer, Rebecca sent a file.

I opened it.

The recording was short.

Sarah's voice filled the study.

"Rebecca, I know I owe you. But Lily comes first. If anything happens to me, please don't involve Michael. He has enough to deal with.""

A pause.

Then Sarah continued.

"I made a mistake. I trusted the wrong person, and I need to fix it before my daughter grows up.""

The recording ended.

I sat motionless.

Sarah's voice had been gone from my life for five years.

Hearing it again felt like someone had opened a door I had spent years trying to close.

Daniel placed a hand on my shoulder.

"Michael, we need to verify this.""

I nodded.

Then I called Rebecca back.

"Where can we meet?""

She gave me an address.

"Tomorrow morning. Bring your attorney.""

The next day, Daniel and I arrived at a quiet restaurant near Rebecca's office.

She was already waiting.

She looked older than she had in the wedding photograph, but her eyes were sharp.

She stood when we approached.

"Michael.""

"Rebecca.""

She gestured toward the chairs.

"I suppose Vanessa told you about the money.""

"She told me you threatened her.""

Rebecca laughed.

"Vanessa has always been very good at making herself the victim.""

"Did you receive seventy-four thousand dollars from my daughter's trust?""

Her expression changed.

"Some of it.""

"How much?""

"Thirty thousand.""

"Why?""

"Because Vanessa said it was repayment for an investment Sarah had made.""

I leaned forward.

"Sarah never told me about an investment.""

"Exactly.""

Rebecca reached into her handbag and removed a thick folder.

Inside were bank statements, printed emails, and a signed contract.

"Sarah invested in my first company before she met you. She lost most of her money. I tried to recover what I could, but she never paid me back.""

"Then why wait five years?""

Rebecca looked at me.

"Because Sarah asked me to.""

She opened another folder.

There were copies of letters exchanged shortly before Sarah died.

One contained a sentence that made me stop breathing.

If Rebecca comes looking for Lily, don't let her take my daughter.

I looked up.

"What does this mean?""

Rebecca's face became pale.

She closed the folder.

"Michael, there's a reason Sarah changed Lily's trust.""

"What reason?""

Rebecca leaned closer.

"Because someone in your family had already tried to claim her inheritance before she was even born.""

I stared at her.

"Who?""

May you like

Rebecca looked directly into my eyes.

"Your mother.""
