Chapter 4: The Secret My First Wife Left Behind

"Don't you dare use Sarah's name to distract me," I said.

Vanessa stood near the kitchen counter, gripping her coffee cup so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.

"I'm not distracting you, Michael. I'm trying to explain something you never bothered to understand.""

"Then explain it.""

She glanced toward Patricia, the child welfare professional, who was speaking quietly with Lily in the living room.

"Not in front of everyone.""

I laughed without humor.

"You had no problem discussing my daughter's inheritance with your sister. You had no problem taking seventy-four thousand dollars from her account. But suddenly, privacy matters?""

Vanessa put down her cup.

"Sarah wasn't the person you thought she was.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"Be careful.""

"She left things unfinished.""

"Sarah died five years ago. Whatever problems you think you have with her, you leave them out of this.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"You don't know everything about your first wife.""

I turned toward Daniel, who had arrived after reviewing the financial records.

"Can you give us a moment?""

Daniel nodded but remained close enough to hear if necessary.

I looked back at Vanessa.

"Start talking.""

She took a breath.

"Before Sarah died, she borrowed money from someone. A lot of money.""

"Who?""

"Her brother.""

I stared at her.

Sarah had no brother.

At least, not one I knew.

"Sarah was an only child.""

Vanessa looked down.

"That's what she told you.""

My stomach tightened.

"Who are you talking about?""

"Her name was Rebecca. They had the same mother, different fathers. They stopped speaking years before you met Sarah.""

I remembered Sarah mentioning a cousin named Rebecca once, but never a sister.

"How much did Sarah borrow?""

"Two hundred thousand dollars.""

I shook my head.

"That's impossible.""

"She used it to invest in a business. It failed. She never paid the money back.""

"And you know this because?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"Because Rebecca contacted me.""

"When?""

I stared at her.

"Why would Sarah's sister contact you?""

"She wanted the money.""

"And you decided to give her seventy-four thousand dollars from Lily's trust?""

Vanessa's voice cracked.

"I thought I was helping.""

"By stealing from a child?""

"I wasn't stealing!""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Mrs. Carter, the financial records show transfers made without the trustee's authorization. Calling them something else doesn't change that.""

Vanessa turned toward him.

"Stay out of my marriage.""

Daniel remained calm.

"This isn't a marital disagreement anymore.""

She looked at me again.

"Michael, Rebecca threatened to expose Sarah's past. She said she had documents proving Sarah had hidden debts. She told me that if I didn't pay, she would make sure Lily inherited nothing.""

I frowned.

"Why didn't you come to me?""

"Because you worship Sarah. You would never believe anything bad about her.""

"That's not an answer.""

Vanessa looked toward the living room.

"Because I needed the money.""

There it was.

The first honest sentence she'd spoken all evening.

I took a step closer.

"What did you need it for?""

She pressed her lips together.

"Rachel's business.""

I stared at her.

"Your sister's business?""

"It was struggling. She needed help.""

"So you took money from my daughter to rescue your sister's company?""

"She promised to repay it!""

"With what?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Daniel asked her to provide the documentation supporting the transfers. She refused, saying she needed to speak with her attorney first.

The officers reminded everyone that the financial allegations would be handled separately from the child welfare investigation.

Before leaving, Patricia approached me.

"Michael, based on what Lily and Mason have told us, I recommend that the children remain somewhere safe while we investigate. Vanessa should not be left alone with Lily.""

"Agreed.""

Vanessa immediately protested.

"You cannot take my children away!""

Patricia corrected her gently.

"We are discussing temporary safety arrangements, not making a permanent custody decision.""

"Mason is my son!""

Mason appeared in the doorway.

He looked exhausted.

"Mom, please stop.""

Vanessa turned toward him.

"You're really choosing him over me?""

Mason's face crumpled.

"I'm choosing Lily.""

Vanessa opened her mouth, but no words came.

That night, my mother came to collect the children.

Lily fell asleep in the back seat holding her favorite stuffed rabbit. Mason sat beside her, staring out the window.

I watched the car disappear down the street.

For the first time in months, my daughter was somewhere she could sleep without being afraid of footsteps outside her bedroom.

I returned inside to find Vanessa packing a suitcase.

"Where are you going?"" I asked.

"To Rachel's.""

"You should speak to your attorney before making any decisions.""

She zipped her suitcase.

"You think this is over?""

"No. I think it's just beginning.""

She walked toward me.

"You'll regret destroying this family.""

I stepped aside.

"You destroyed it when you decided my daughter didn't deserve dinner.""

She stopped at the doorway.

Then she turned around.

"There's something else you should know about Sarah.""

I said nothing.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

"The trust wasn't originally supposed to belong entirely to Lily.""

My heart skipped.

"What?""

"Sarah changed the beneficiary shortly before she died.""

"Daniel told me that.""

Vanessa nodded.

"But she didn't tell you why.""

She reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

"Read this.""

I took it.

It was a photocopy of a letter.

The handwriting was unmistakably Sarah's.

If Michael ever discovers what happened before Lily was born, make sure he understands that I did everything to protect our daughter.

My fingers went cold.

At the bottom was a date.

Three days before Sarah died.

I looked up.

"Where did you get this?""

Vanessa picked up her suitcase.

"Ask Rebecca.""

Then she walked out.

May you like

I stood alone in the hallway, holding a letter from my dead wife.

And for the first time, I wondered whether Sarah had been keeping a secret from me, too.
