Chapter 3: The Money in Lily's Name

I replayed the recording three times.

Each time, Vanessa's words sounded worse.

"If Michael ever finds out what happened to his daughter's savings, we're both finished.""

I looked at Mason.

"What savings?""

He shook his head.

"I don't know. I only heard her talking to someone.""

"Who?""

"I think it was Aunt Rachel.""

Vanessa's younger sister, Rachel, lived twenty minutes away. She visited occasionally, usually bringing expensive handbags and talking about her latest shopping purchases.

I had never particularly liked her, but I had no reason to suspect she was involved in anything concerning Lily.

"What else did they say?""

Mason scrolled through the recording.

Then he played the rest.

Vanessa's voice came first.

"The transfer went through. There's nothing left to worry about.""

Another woman's voice answered.

"What if Michael checks the account?""

"He won't. He barely remembers it exists.""

"You're sure the little girl can't access anything?""

Vanessa laughed.

"She's five. She doesn't even understand money.""

The recording ended.

I felt as though someone had punched me in the chest.

Lily had received money from my late wife, Sarah.

Before Sarah died, she had established a trust for our daughter. It contained money from an insurance settlement, savings, and a small investment account.

My attorney had explained everything to me.

The funds were supposed to remain untouched until Lily reached adulthood, except for approved expenses benefiting her.

I had deliberately kept the account separate from our household finances.

After marrying Vanessa, I had mentioned it only once.

I hadn't thought much about it since.

Now I was beginning to understand why she had asked so many questions about Lily's inheritance during the early months of our marriage.

I pulled out my phone and called my attorney, Daniel Brooks.

He answered after two rings.

"Michael? Everything okay?""

"No. I need you to check Lily's trust account immediately.""

"What happened?""

I looked toward the staircase.

"My wife may have transferred money out of it.""

Daniel's voice became serious.

"Don't confront her about the financial issue yet. I'm going to review the records. Do you have evidence?""

I glanced at Mason.

"I have a recording.""

"Preserve the original. Don't edit it, don't send it around, and don't delete anything. I'll contact the trustee and request a complete transaction history.""

"How much money are we talking about?""

There was a pause.

"Michael, the original trust was worth approximately two hundred and eighty thousand dollars when Sarah passed away. With the investments, it should be considerably higher now.""

I sat down.

Two hundred and eighty thousand dollars.

Money Sarah had worked her entire life to leave for our daughter.

"Call me as soon as you find anything.""

"I will.""

I ended the call.

Mason stood beside me.

"Dad?""

I looked up.

"Did I do something wrong?""

The question broke something in me.

I pulled him into a hug.

"No. You did the right thing.""

"But Mom says I'm betraying her.""

"You protected your sister. That's not betrayal.""

He started crying against my shoulder.

"I didn't know how to make her stop.""

I held him tighter.

"You shouldn't have had to.""

A knock sounded at the front door.

Two police officers had arrived, accompanied by a child welfare professional.

I explained what had happened, showed them Lily's injuries, and described the recordings.

One officer spoke with Vanessa upstairs while the other asked Mason questions.

The child welfare professional, a calm woman named Patricia, examined Lily and asked gentle questions about her meals and daily routine.

Lily told her about the locked pantry.

She described the laundry room.

She even explained how Vanessa sometimes made her sit alone while Mason ate dinner.

Patricia wrote everything down.

"Michael," she said quietly, "we'll need to make sure both children are safe while this is investigated.""

"Of course.""

Vanessa eventually came downstairs.

She had changed into a clean sweater and fixed her hair.

It was almost impressive how quickly she could transform herself.

"Thank goodness you're here," she told the officers.

"My husband has become aggressive and is making ridiculous accusations.""

One officer looked at her.

"Ma'am, we need you to answer some questions.""

Vanessa pointed toward me.

"He assaulted me earlier.""

I didn't deny it.

"I slapped her after she struck my daughter," I said.

"I understand that was wrong. I'll answer any questions about it.""

Vanessa blinked.

Perhaps she had expected me to lie.

The officer separated us and took statements.

Patricia arranged for Lily to receive a medical examination and discussed temporary safety arrangements for the children.

Vanessa kept insisting that everything was a misunderstanding.

Then she made a mistake.

She looked at Mason and said, "You had no right to record private conversations in my house.""

Mason stared at her.

"You said Lily deserved to be hungry.""

Vanessa's lips tightened.

"That's not what I said.""

"I have the videos.""

"Those videos are edited!""

"No, Mom.""

The officer raised a hand.

"Let's keep the conversation calm.""

Vanessa fell silent.

Later that evening, Daniel called back.

I stepped outside to take the call.

"Michael, I found something.""

My stomach dropped.

"How bad?""

"Several transfers were made from an account connected to Lily's trust.""

"How much?""

"Approximately seventy-four thousand dollars.""

I gripped the porch railing.

"Where did it go?""

"Some went to an account under Vanessa's name. Some went to a company registered to her sister.""

I stared through the window.

Vanessa was sitting at the dining table, drinking coffee as though nothing had happened.

"Can you recover it?""

"We're working on freezing the remaining funds. But there's something else.""

"What?""

"The withdrawals were disguised as expenses for Lily.""

My jaw tightened.

"What kind of expenses?""

"Childcare, education, medical costs, clothing. But the supporting documentation appears questionable.""

"Meaning?""

"Some receipts don't match the businesses listed. Others appear to be fabricated.""

I closed my eyes.

Daniel continued.

"There's also a document authorizing Vanessa to manage certain financial matters. It carries your signature.""

My eyes opened.

"What document?""

"A financial authorization form dated eight months ago.""

"I never signed that.""

Silence.

Then Daniel said, "That's what I was afraid you'd say.""

I looked back through the window.

Vanessa was no longer sitting at the table.

She was standing in the hallway, watching me.

Our eyes met.

She slowly lifted her coffee cup.

And smiled.

I returned inside.

"Vanessa," I said, keeping my voice low.

"Did you access Lily's trust?""

Her smile disappeared.

"What are you talking about?""

"Seventy-four thousand dollars.""

For the first time, she looked genuinely frightened.

Then she whispered, "Michael, you need to listen to me. I didn't take that money for myself.""

"Then where did it go?""

She glanced toward the staircase.

And her next words changed everything.

"Your daughter wasn't the only person I was trying to protect.""

I stared at her.

"Who else?""

Vanessa looked toward the front door.

Then she said a name I hadn't heard in years.

"Sarah.""

My first wife's name.

May you like

And suddenly, I realized that whatever Vanessa had done to Lily was only part of a much bigger secret.

*I could see the fear in her eyes. But I couldn't understand why my dead wife's name had anything to do with it.*
