Chapter 7: The Plan Hidden Behind The Marriage

I left my attorney’s office with a feeling I had never experienced before.

It wasn’t anger.

It wasn’t sadness.

It was the terrifying realization that the person I trusted most had been preparing for a future without me.

For years, I believed Vanessa loved me because she accepted my life, including Ethan.

But now I wondered if she had only accepted Ethan because she thought he was something she could eventually remove.

When I arrived home, Ethan was sitting at the kitchen table.

He looked up immediately.

“Dad?””

I put my keys down.

“We need to talk.””

His expression changed.

“Did you find something?””

I nodded.

And when I told him what my attorney said, he didn’t look surprised.

That hurt more than anything.

“You knew?””

He shook his head quickly.

“Not exactly.””

“Then why do you look like you expected this?””

Ethan looked at his hands.

“Because Vanessa asked me questions before.””

“What kind of questions?””

He took a breath.

“She asked if you ever talked about changing your will. She asked if I planned to stay in the house after college.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“What did you say?””

“I told her I didn’t know.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

He looked at me.

“Because I thought maybe I was overthinking.””

I sat down across from him.

“You spent months trying to convince yourself that something was wrong, and nobody listened.””

His eyes became wet.

“I didn’t want to be the reason you lost your marriage.””

I shook my head.

“You weren’t.””

A long silence followed.

Then I said the words I should have said much earlier.

“You were never the problem.””

Ethan looked away.

For a moment, he looked like the little boy who used to wait by the window for me to come home from work.

A child who had spent too long trying not to take up space.

That afternoon, I called Vanessa.

She answered quickly.

“Daniel?””

Her voice sounded cautious.

“I need to meet you.””

There was a pause.

“About what?””

“About the truth.””

Another silence.

Then she said:

“I’ll come.””

We met at a small café away from the house.

Vanessa walked in wearing the same confidence she always had.

Like she still believed she controlled the situation.

She sat across from me.

“I assume this is about Ethan.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

Her eyebrows lifted.

“It’s about you.””

For the first time, she looked uncomfortable.

I placed copies of the documents on the table.

Her face changed instantly.

“You went through my things?””

“No.””

I pushed them toward her.

“My son found them.””

She stared at the papers.

Then she sighed.

“Daniel, you don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She looked around the café.

“Not here.””

“No.””

My voice stayed calm.

“You wanted to make decisions about my family behind my back. You can explain them here.””

Her expression hardened.

“You’re making me the villain.””

“I’m asking why you tried to find out how to control my assets.””

She looked down.

Then she said something I never expected.

“Because I was afraid.””

I frowned.

“Afraid of what?””

“Of being left with nothing.””

I stared at her.

“You have a home. You have a family.””

She shook her head.

“No. I had a family.””

The way she said it made me realize she had already decided she was the victim.

“Vanessa, you tried to remove my son.””

“I tried to protect my daughter.””

“By destroying his life?””

She looked away.

“He never accepted us.””

“That’s not true.””

“It is.””

Her voice became sharper.

“You think Ethan is innocent because he’s your son. But you never saw the way he looked at us.””

I leaned forward.

“You’re still avoiding the question.””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she picked up her purse.

“You really think Ethan has told you everything?””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

She stood.

“Ask him what happened the night your first wife died.””

The words hit me like a shock.

My first wife.

Ethan’s mother.

Vanessa walked away before I could respond.

I sat there, unable to move.

Because there was one thing I knew.

May you like

Ethan had always avoided talking about that night.

And suddenly, I wondered why.
