Chapter 4: The Missing Evidence

I barely slept that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Ethan sitting on his bed, quietly packing his things because he thought leaving would make my life easier.

A father is supposed to protect his child.

But I realized something painful.

Sometimes you can fail your child without ever meaning to.

The next morning, I waited until Vanessa and Chloe were both downstairs.

I wanted answers.

Not excuses.

Vanessa was making coffee when I walked into the kitchen.

“Where is the security footage from last week?””

Her hand stopped moving.

Only for a second.

But I noticed.

“What footage?”” she asked.

I watched her carefully.

“The hallway camera.””

Her expression changed.

“Why?””

“Because I want to see what happened.””

Vanessa placed the coffee mug down.

“Daniel, this is getting ridiculous.””

“No. What’s ridiculous is asking me to remove my son without letting me see the truth.””

Chloe entered the kitchen.

“What’s going on?””

I looked at her.

“I want to see the footage from the night you said Ethan was making you uncomfortable.””

Her face immediately changed.

“You don’t believe me?””

“I believe the truth matters.””

Vanessa stepped between us.

“You’re treating my daughter like a suspect.””

“And you’re treating my son like a criminal.””

The room went silent.

Chloe looked hurt.

But something about her reaction felt different now.

Before, she was angry.

Now she looked nervous.

Vanessa noticed me watching.

“Daniel, the camera wasn’t working.””

I stared at her.

“Convenient.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Are you accusing me?””

“I’m asking questions.””

“No, you’re choosing him.””

I shook my head.

“I’m choosing facts.””

Chloe suddenly grabbed her bag.

“I can’t do this.””

She started walking away.

“Chloe.””

She stopped.

I softened my voice.

“I’m not trying to hurt you.””

She turned around.

“Then why does it feel like you already decided I’m lying?””

I looked at her.

“Because I’m starting to wonder why nobody wants the truth to come out.””

Her face changed.

For a moment, she looked afraid.

Then Vanessa stepped in.

“Enough.””

I looked at my wife.

“No. Not enough.””

I walked upstairs and checked the security system myself.

The camera files were stored through a backup account I had created years earlier.

I logged in.

Most of the recordings were there.

Except one night.

The exact night Chloe made her accusation.

Deleted.

I stood there staring at the empty file.

Someone had removed it.

And only two people in the house knew the password.

Me.

And Vanessa.

I walked downstairs holding my laptop.

Vanessa looked at my face and immediately knew.

“What happened?””

I placed the laptop on the table.

“The footage is gone.””

She stayed quiet.

“Vanessa.””

She looked away.

“I don’t know anything about that.””

The answer came too quickly.

I noticed.

Before I could respond, Chloe walked in holding her phone.

Her face was pale.

“Mom…”

Vanessa turned.

“What?””

Chloe looked at me.

Then at her mother.

“I think you need to tell him.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Tell me what?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Chloe whispered:

“The night everything started… Mom wasn’t the one who found out about Ethan.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Chloe looked terrified.

“It means…”

She stopped.

Her eyes moved toward Vanessa.

And Vanessa’s face suddenly lost all color.

Because whatever Chloe was about to reveal was something even she didn’t want me to hear.

Then Chloe said the words that changed everything.

“Mom knew about Ethan before I ever said anything.””
