Chapter 3: The Letter I Was Never Supposed To Read

I stared at the envelope on my desk for almost a full minute before touching it.

There was no return address.

No name.

Only my name written across the front in handwriting I didn’t recognize.

For a moment, I thought about throwing it away.

But something stopped me.

A strange feeling in my chest told me this wasn’t random.

I slowly opened it.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

The first sentence made my heart stop.

*Daniel, you need to know what really happened before you lose your family.*

I read the rest quickly.

The letter wasn’t from a stranger.

It was from Marcus, one of Ethan’s closest friends.

He wrote that he had stayed quiet because he didn’t want to create more problems inside my house.

But after hearing Vanessa demand that Ethan leave, he couldn’t stay silent anymore.

According to Marcus, the story Chloe told wasn’t the whole truth.

A few weeks earlier, Chloe had been angry because Ethan refused to help her sneak out with friends late at night.

Ethan had told her he wouldn’t cover for her if Vanessa asked where she was.

Marcus claimed Chloe became upset and told Ethan she would “make sure everyone believed him instead.””

I read that sentence three times.

My hands tightened around the paper.

This couldn’t be true.

Could it?

I immediately called Marcus.

He answered after two rings.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Marcus, I need you to tell me the truth.””

There was silence.

“About Ethan and Chloe?””

“Yes.””

He exhaled.

“I was hoping you wouldn’t find out this way.””

I closed my eyes.

“Tell me everything.””

Marcus hesitated.

Then he started talking.

“Ethan never stared at Chloe. He avoided her because things were already awkward.””

“Why?””

“Because she didn’t like him telling her no.””

I walked toward the window.

“And you’re sure?””

“Yes, sir.””

His voice became more serious.

“Ethan has been protecting Chloe more than you know. He covered for her when she broke curfew. He helped her with school projects. He treated her like family.””

My chest felt heavy.

“And now she’s accusing him?””

“I know how it sounds.””

“No,” I said quietly.

“Tell me what happened.””

Marcus took a breath.

“The night before everything started, Chloe and Ethan argued. She wanted him to lie for her. He refused. The next day, she told her mom he was making her uncomfortable.””

I looked down at the letter in my hand.

The pieces were beginning to connect.

“Why didn’t Ethan tell me?””

Marcus was quiet.

Then he answered.

“Because he was scared you would lose Vanessa.””

Those words hurt.

Not because of what they said about Ethan.

Because they said something about me.

My own son had been sitting in silence, afraid that telling the truth would cost him his father’s marriage.

I ended the call and immediately went upstairs.

I found Ethan packing clothes into a small bag.

My heart sank.

“What are you doing?””

He froze.

“Dad…”

“Why are you packing?””

He looked away.

“I thought maybe it would make things easier.””

I walked closer.

“Ethan, look at me.””

Slowly, he turned.

His eyes were tired.

“I don’t want you to lose Vanessa because of me.””

That sentence broke something inside me.

“You think this is your fault?””

He shrugged.

“I’m the reason everyone is fighting.””

“No.””

My voice came out stronger than I expected.

“You are not the problem.””

He looked down.

“Then why does everyone act like I am?””

I didn’t have an answer.

Because the truth was, I had allowed him to feel that way.

I sat beside him.

“Why didn’t you tell me what happened?””

His fingers gripped the edge of his bag.

“Because every time Vanessa complained about me, you looked stressed.””

“That doesn’t mean you stay quiet.””

“I didn’t want you to be alone again.””

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

He swallowed.

“After Mom died, you were broken. Vanessa made you happy again. I thought if I caused problems, you would lose that.””

I felt my eyes burn.

My son had been carrying a burden that never belonged to him.

I pulled him into a hug.

“You should never have had to protect me.””

For the first time in days, he stopped pretending he was okay.

That night, I made a decision.

I wasn’t going to fight Vanessa with anger.

I was going to find the truth.

And the next person I needed to talk to was Chloe.

But before I could confront her, I received another message.

It was from an unknown number.

Only one sentence was written.

*You think Chloe is the one lying? Ask your wife why she deleted the security footage.*

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Because suddenly, this wasn’t just about my son anymore.

It was about how far Vanessa was willing to go to protect her story.
