Chapter 2: My Son’s Home
I spent the entire day replaying Vanessa’s words in my head.
Not because I was confused about what mattered.
I wasn’t.
But because I couldn’t understand how someone I married could look at my son and decide he was disposable.
That evening, I came home earlier than usual.
The house was quiet.
Too quiet.
I walked past the living room and heard voices coming from the kitchen.
Vanessa and Chloe were talking.
I stopped before entering.
“I told you he would defend him,” Chloe said.
“He always has,” Vanessa replied.
“He’ll never choose us.””
There was a pause.
Then Vanessa said something that made my hands tighten.
“He needs to understand that this is our home now.””
I stepped into the kitchen.
“Our home?””
Both of them turned around.
Vanessa immediately changed her expression.
“Daniel, you’re home early.””
“Yes.””
I looked around the kitchen.
The place I had bought years before Vanessa entered my life.
The place where Ethan had celebrated birthdays.
The place where my first wife and I had cooked together when Ethan was still a little boy.
I looked back at Vanessa.
“You said this is your home now.””
She sighed.
“Daniel, don’t make this dramatic.””
“Dramatic?””
I laughed once.
“My son is being accused of something serious, and you want him gone. How is that not dramatic?””
Chloe stepped forward.
“Dad, you don’t understand because you’re not a girl.””
I looked at her.
“I understand that accusations matter. But so does the truth.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“So you think I’m lying?””
“I think everyone deserves to be heard.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“This is exactly the problem. You always protect Ethan.””
“Because I’m his father.””
The room went silent.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Vanessa walked closer.
“I’m asking you one last time. Make him leave.””
I stared at her.
“You really want my son to leave his own father’s house?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
I couldn’t believe how easily she said it.
A strange laugh escaped from me.
Not because it was funny.
Because I finally understood.
“Wow.””
Vanessa frowned.
“What?””
I shook my head.
“I can’t believe you’re actually standing here asking me to remove my child from his home.””
She crossed her arms.
“I’m protecting my daughter.””
“And who protects my son?””
Nobody answered.
A few minutes later, Ethan came downstairs after hearing the argument.
“Dad…”
I looked at him.
His face showed fear.
Not fear of Vanessa.
Fear that he was about to lose the only place where he felt safe.
I walked toward him.
“Ethan, listen to me.””
He looked down.
“If you want me to leave, I’ll leave.””
Those words hurt more than anything Vanessa had said.
“No.””
He looked up.
“No?””
I shook my head.
“You don’t leave your home because someone decides they don’t want you here.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Daniel, don’t do this.””
I turned to her.
“No, Vanessa. I think I’ve done enough pretending everything is fine.””
Her expression changed.
“What does that mean?””
“It means I’m done allowing my son to feel like a guest in his own house.””
Chloe looked shocked.
“Dad, you’re choosing him?””
I looked at both of them.
“I’m choosing what is right.””
Vanessa’s face became cold.
“So what now?””
I took a breath.
Then I gave her the answer she never expected.
“If Ethan makes you uncomfortable in his own home, then maybe the person who needs to leave isn’t him.””
Her eyes widened.
“What are you saying?””
I stepped closer.
“I’m saying this is my son’s home too.””
The silence was heavy.
Then I finished.
“Maybe you and Chloe should go live with her father.””
Vanessa stared at me like she had never seen me before.
“You’re serious?””
I nodded.
“Completely.””
For the first time since I met her, Vanessa had no response.
But as she walked away, she stopped at the doorway.
She looked back at me.
And with a quiet voice, she said:
“Daniel, you have no idea what you just started.””
I watched her leave.
And those words stayed in my mind.
Because I knew there was something she wasn’t telling me.
The next morning, I found an envelope sitting on my desk.
My name was written across the front.
And inside was something that made my entire body go cold.
May you like
Because it wasn’t from Vanessa.
It was from someone who knew the truth about what happened between Ethan and Chloe.
