Chapter 6: The Secret Ethan Hid From Me

After Vanessa left, the house felt strangely quiet.

Not peaceful.

Empty.

Ethan sat across from me in the living room.

For the first time in weeks, he wasn’t looking like someone waiting to be accused.

But I could tell something was bothering him.

“What did she mean?”” I asked.

He looked up.

“Who?””

“Vanessa.””

His expression changed.

“You don’t need to listen to her.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Ethan looked away.

And immediately, I knew.

There was something.

“Ethan.””

He took a deep breath.

“Dad…”

I waited.

“I didn’t tell you everything.””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

“Because I thought it would make things worse.””

I leaned forward.

“Tell me.””

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he stood and walked upstairs.

A few minutes later, he came back holding a small box.

“I kept this because I didn’t know what to do with it.””

He placed it on the table.

Inside were printed messages, photographs, and notes.

I looked at him.

“What is this?””

“Things I found.””

I picked up one of the papers.

It was a message from Vanessa to someone named Robert.

The words weren’t completely clear, but one sentence stood out.

*The house will be easier once Ethan is gone.*

My stomach tightened.

“Who is Robert?””

Ethan swallowed.

“Chloe’s biological father.””

I looked at him.

“Why would Vanessa be talking to him?””

“I don’t know.””

I picked up another paper.

This one was a picture.

A document.

A property document.

My name was on it.

So was Ethan’s.

I looked at my son.

“What is this?””

He sat down slowly.

“A few months ago, I overheard Vanessa talking about the house.””

“What did she say?””

He hesitated.

“She said once you changed your will, everything would be simpler.””

My hands went cold.

I stared at the papers.

“You think she was trying to get me to remove you because of the house?””

Ethan shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

But I did.

Suddenly, every argument made sense.

Every complaint.

Every moment Vanessa acted like Ethan was a problem.

It wasn’t about comfort.

It wasn’t about family.

It was about control.

I stood up.

“Why didn’t you tell me this?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because you loved her.””

I looked at him.

“And?””

“I thought you would think I was trying to break you apart.””

That sentence hurt.

Because my son had been protecting everyone except himself.

I sat beside him.

“Ethan, you should have trusted me.””

“I wanted to.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

He looked down.

“Because every time I tried to talk, Vanessa would tell me I was selfish.””

I closed my eyes.

For years, I thought I was building a bigger family.

But maybe I had been ignoring the cracks underneath.

That night, I called my attorney.

I needed answers.

Not assumptions.

The next morning, I arrived at his office.

He opened the file I brought.

Then his expression changed.

“Daniel…”

“What?””

He looked at the documents.

“Where did you get this?””

“My son found them.””

He slowly closed the folder.

“There’s something you need to know.””

I leaned forward.

“What?””

He looked directly at me.

“Your wife came to see me three months ago.””

My heart stopped.

“She did what?””

“She asked questions about your estate.””

The room suddenly felt smaller.

“What kind of questions?””

My attorney hesitated.

Then he said:

“She wanted to know how quickly she could gain control of your assets if something happened to you.””

I sat frozen.

Because now I knew Vanessa wasn’t just trying to remove Ethan from my house.

She had been planning something much bigger.

May you like

And the worst part?

She wasn’t finished.
