Chapter 9: The Woman Who Had Been Lying All Along
We reached the courthouse twenty minutes later.
Daniel drove while Marcus sat in the passenger seat, repeatedly calling Olivia.
Nobody answered.
I sat in the back, staring at the photograph of my mother and Daniel.
I still couldn't understand how my entire life had been built around secrets.
Marcus had raised me.
Daniel was my biological father.
Richard had been using everyone.
And Vanessa had married the man she called her father-in-law while secretly working for her own father.
It sounded like a nightmare someone had invented.
But the bruises on my father's hand and the empty space in my mother's desk proved otherwise.
When we arrived, two officers were standing near the courthouse entrance.
Daniel approached them.
"We're looking for a woman named Olivia Bennett. She called us from inside.""
One officer checked his radio.
"She was involved in an altercation near the records office. She's been taken to the medical unit for evaluation.""
"Is she hurt?"" I asked.
"Minor injuries, as far as we know.""
Marcus exhaled.
"Thank God.""
We found Olivia sitting on a bench with an ice pack against her forehead.
Her coat was torn at the sleeve.
When she saw me, she stood.
"Ethan.""
"What happened?""
"Vanessa tried to take the folder.""
"Where is it?""
Olivia opened her bag.
"Here.""
She removed a thick envelope.
Inside were original medical records, copies of bank statements, and several photographs.
Daniel examined the papers.
His eyes widened.
"Where did you get these?""
"From my mother's old storage unit. Robert kept some of the documents there.""
I picked up the first medical record.
It was dated eighteen years earlier.
My mother's name appeared at the top.
Under the section marked Biological Father, the document listed Daniel Reed.
The result had been confirmed by a certified laboratory.
Another document showed a second test.
This one had been ordered six months later.
It also identified Daniel as my biological father.
I looked at Olivia.
"Why did Vanessa say Richard was my father?""
"Because she had another report.""
She removed a third document.
It was dated three weeks earlier.
The result listed Richard Bennett as my biological father.
But the laboratory stamp was different.
Daniel examined it.
"This laboratory didn't exist at the time the report was supposedly issued.""
Marcus stared.
"Then it's fake.""
Daniel nodded.
"Yes.""
Olivia continued.
"Vanessa told me Richard had proof that Ethan was his son. She said Claire had hidden it because she wanted to protect Marcus.""
I looked at the documents.
"Why would she go to all this trouble?""
Olivia took a breath.
"Because Richard needed a reason to challenge the trust.""
Daniel looked up.
"Exactly.""
He turned to Marcus.
"If Richard could establish himself as Ethan's biological father, he could claim that Claire had concealed information affecting the estate. That would give him an excuse to challenge the original trust documents.""
"But he isn't my father," I said.
"No," Daniel replied.
"He isn't.""
Marcus looked at Olivia.
"Did Vanessa know?""
Olivia nodded.
"She knew the test was fake. She helped arrange it.""
My father closed his eyes.
"Why would she do this to me?""
Olivia looked at him sadly.
"Because she never loved you.""
The words were quiet.
But they hurt.
"She wanted access to the estate," Olivia continued.
"She told Richard that marrying you would make everything easier. She believed that once she became part of the family, she could persuade you to sign the transfer documents.""
Marcus sat down.
"I gave her everything.""
Olivia looked away.
"You gave her access.""
Daniel was still examining the papers.
Then he found something.
A photograph.
It showed Vanessa standing beside Robert outside a medical records office.
A second man stood behind them.
Richard.
On the back was a date from three weeks earlier.
Daniel placed it beside the forged medical report.
"This is enough to establish that they were working together when the fraudulent claim was created.""
I looked at Olivia.
"Why did you help them?""
She lowered her eyes.
"Because I thought Richard was my father.""
"He's not?""
She shook her head.
"My mother told me the truth before she died. Richard was my biological father, but he abandoned us. He never cared about me. He only wanted to use me.""
I felt something shift inside me.
For the first time, I understood Olivia's position.
She had been manipulated by the same man who had manipulated Vanessa.
The difference was that she had finally decided to stop helping him.
"Why did you come forward?"" I asked.
She looked at me.
"Because I saw what Vanessa did to you. I watched her tell everyone you were violent. I knew exactly how it felt to have someone use your family history against you.""
She reached into the envelope and handed me a smaller piece of paper.
"Your mother wrote this to me.""
I unfolded it.
Olivia,
You are not responsible for your father's choices. If he ever tries to use you to hurt Ethan, walk away. He will tell you that family means loyalty. But real family never asks you to destroy another person's future.
I hope one day you and Ethan can meet without fear.
My eyes burned.
My mother had known about Olivia.
She had tried to protect her, too.
I folded the letter carefully.
"Thank you.""
Olivia nodded.
Then she looked toward the entrance.
"There's something else.""
Daniel stood.
"What?""
"Vanessa didn't come alone.""
Marcus looked up.
"Richard?""
Olivia shook her head.
"She brought someone from the bank. Someone who was supposed to witness the transfer of the trust.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Who?""
Olivia handed him another document.
He read the name.
Then his face changed.
"That's impossible.""
"What?"" I asked.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
"The person listed as the independent trustee's representative is Robert Hale's daughter.""
My father stood.
"Robert has a daughter?""
Daniel nodded.
"She works in the trust administration department. She has access to the internal records.""
I felt sick.
"So they had someone inside the institution.""
"Yes.""
Daniel called the trustee's legal department and immediately reported the forged documents. He requested an emergency freeze on all pending transactions and demanded that the representative be removed from the case.
As he spoke, Marcus received a message.
He looked at the screen.
Then his face tightened.
"What is it?"" I asked.
He handed me the phone.
The message came from Vanessa.
I hope you've enjoyed playing detective. You have one hour to bring me the original trust agreement, or I'll make sure the entire world learns what Claire did before Ethan was born.
Below the message was an attachment.
A scanned photograph of my mother in a hospital bed.
She looked extremely weak.
A man stood beside her, his face partially hidden.
The caption read:
The night Claire signed away her son's future.
I stared at the image.
"She's threatening to release this?""
Daniel nodded.
"She's trying to make it look like Claire was too ill to understand the documents she signed.""
My father clenched his fists.
"She's going to destroy Claire's reputation.""
I looked at the photograph again.
Then I noticed something.
The man standing beside my mother wore a distinctive ring.
A silver ring with a small black stone.
I had seen it before.
On Robert Hale's hand.
"Daniel.""
He looked up.
"Look at his hand.""
Daniel enlarged the photograph.
The ring was unmistakable.
Marcus stared.
"Robert was there when Claire signed the documents?""
Daniel nodded slowly.
"Or when someone staged the photograph.""
Olivia looked at the image.
Then she pointed to the hospital bracelet on my mother's wrist.
"That's wrong.""
I turned.
"What?""
"Your mother was admitted to a different hospital that week. I know because my mother visited her.""
Daniel checked the date on the photograph.
Then he pulled up the hospital records Olivia had provided.
He compared the two.
His face became expressionless.
"This photograph was taken two months before Claire died.""
Marcus frowned.
"How do you know?""
Daniel pointed to the document.
"Because Claire was discharged from the hospital on this date. She wasn't admitted again until six weeks later.""
I looked at the photograph.
Someone had deliberately misrepresented when it was taken.
Then Daniel noticed another detail.
The man beside my mother wasn't Robert.
It was Richard.
The same face from the photograph.
But there was something else.
A second figure stood in the reflection of the hospital window.
A woman.
Vanessa.
My father stared.
"She was there?""
Olivia nodded.
"She told me she had never met Claire.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"She was lying.""
"Yes," Olivia said.
"She knew my mother before she married you.""
Marcus looked at the photograph for a long time.
Then he whispered, "She was there when Claire was dying.""
The realization crushed him.
He had married a woman who had known his first wife, who had conspired with his brother, and who had entered his home pretending to care about the family.
Daniel's phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
Then slowly lowered it.
"What happened?"" I asked.
"The independent trustee has confirmed that the pending transfer was blocked.""
For a moment, relief washed over me.
Then he added:
"But there's a problem.""
"What?""
"Someone accessed the trust account before the freeze took effect.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"How much?""
Daniel looked at the transaction record.
"Six hundred and fifty thousand dollars.""
My stomach dropped.
"Where did it go?""
Daniel turned the screen toward us.
The receiving account belonged to a company registered under a familiar name.
*Bennett Family Holdings.*
But the listed owner wasn't Marcus.
It was me.
My father looked horrified.
"Ethan didn't authorize that.""
Daniel nodded.
"Of course he didn't.""
Then Olivia noticed something at the bottom of the transaction record.
A digital authorization.
A signature.
Mine.
It looked exactly like the signature I had used on my school forms, bank account applications, and driver's license paperwork.
I stared at it.
"That's not mine.""
Daniel enlarged the record.
"No. Someone copied it.""
Marcus took the phone.
"Who had access to Ethan's signature?""
I thought about the documents Vanessa had collected from my room.
My school records.
My old bank statements.
The paperwork from my eighteenth birthday.
Then I remembered something.
Three months earlier, Vanessa had asked me to sign a blank page for a supposed school emergency form.
I had refused.
She had laughed and told me she was joking.
Now I understood.
She hadn't been joking.
My phone vibrated.
An email arrived from an unfamiliar address.
It contained a short video.
I pressed play.
Vanessa appeared on the screen, sitting in a hotel room.
She looked directly into the camera.
"Hello, Ethan.""
She smiled.
"I suppose you know by now that your mother left you quite a fortune.""
She leaned closer.
"But here's something you still don't understand.""
She lifted a document.
"The six hundred and fifty thousand dollars wasn't stolen.""
She paused.
"It was transferred into an account that legally belongs to you.""
My stomach tightened.
"Which means, if the authorities investigate the transaction, you'll be the one accused of financial fraud.""
Marcus grabbed the phone.
"Vanessa!""
She laughed.
"Goodbye, Marcus.""
Then she delivered the words that made my blood run cold.
"And Ethan? Ask Daniel why he never told you what happened to your biological mother.""
The video ended.
I turned toward Olivia.
"Biological mother?""
She shook her head.
"That's impossible. Claire was your mother.""
May you like
Daniel looked at the floor.
And for the first time since I had met him, he seemed genuinely afraid to speak.
