Chapter 6: The Secret My Mother Took to Her Grave

Daniel immediately closed the binder.

"Nobody moves," he whispered.

My father looked toward the basement stairs.

"Robert?""

A man's shoes appeared at the top step.

Then Robert Hale descended slowly, holding his hands away from his sides as though he were arriving for a friendly visit.

Behind him stood a woman I had never seen before.

She was in her early thirties, wearing a dark green coat. Her hair was tied back, and she carried a small leather bag.

Robert smiled.

"Marcus. I was hoping we'd have a chance to talk privately.""

My father stepped forward.

"You have some explaining to do.""

Robert glanced at the open cabinet.

His smile disappeared.

"Where did you get that?""

Daniel moved between him and the cabinet.

"That's none of your business.""

Robert looked at me.

"Ah. Ethan. You've become quite popular.""

I held my phone tightly.

"Did you forge my mother's signature?""

Robert sighed.

"You're too young to understand the complexities of estate administration.""

"Then explain it.""

"Your mother made several decisions that complicated the family's finances.""

"She was dead when that document was signed.""

Robert's jaw tightened.

Marcus stepped forward.

"You told me Richard was dead.""

Robert looked at him.

"I told you what the authorities concluded.""

"You handled the identification.""

"Yes.""

"Did you know he was alive?""

Robert remained silent.

My father grabbed his jacket.

"Answer me!""

The woman behind Robert suddenly spoke.

"Let him go.""

Her voice was calm.

Marcus turned.

"Who are you?""

She looked directly at him.

"My name is Olivia Bennett.""

My father froze.

The name seemed to drain every bit of color from his face.

"That isn't possible.""

Olivia reached into her bag and removed a folded document.

"It's my birth certificate.""

She handed it to him.

Marcus unfolded the paper.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he looked at the woman again.

"Richard's daughter?""

Olivia nodded.

"Yes.""

My father looked toward Margaret.

She lowered her eyes.

"You knew?""

Margaret began crying harder.

"I was trying to protect Ethan.""

"From what?""

Olivia answered.

"From the same people who destroyed my mother.""

Robert moved toward the stairs.

Daniel blocked him.

"Nobody is leaving until we understand what is happening.""

Olivia looked at me.

"Your mother knew about me.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"Claire found out I existed when I was eleven. She contacted my mother and offered to help.""

I glanced at the photograph from the binder.

"Was that you?""

Olivia nodded.

"My mother was the woman in the hospital photograph.""

Marcus sat down heavily.

"Richard had another family?""

Olivia looked at him.

"Yes. And he abandoned us.""

The basement became painfully quiet.

She continued.

"My mother died when I was sixteen. Before she passed, she told me that Richard had disappeared because he was involved in something dangerous. She said Claire had tried to help us.""

I looked at Margaret.

"Why didn't Mom tell me?""

Margaret wiped her cheeks.

"She wanted to. But Richard threatened her.""

Olivia took another document from her bag.

"This is a letter Claire sent my mother. It explains everything.""

Marcus reached for it.

Olivia handed it to him.

He read the first few lines.

Then his hands began to shake.

"What is this?""

Daniel took the letter and read it over his shoulder.

His expression hardened.

The letter explained that Richard had secretly borrowed money from several investors using family properties as collateral. When the debts came due, he forged signatures and attempted to transfer ownership of assets held in Claire's trust.

Claire discovered the fraud.

She threatened to report him.

Two weeks later, Richard staged his death.

But there was something worse.

The letter stated that Richard had left behind a collection of false financial records designed to make Marcus appear responsible for the missing money.

My father looked up.

"He planned to frame me?""

Olivia nodded.

"He needed someone to take the blame if the authorities investigated.""

"And Vanessa?""

"She was part of his plan.""

Robert finally spoke.

"That's enough.""

Daniel turned toward him.

"No. It isn't.""

Robert adjusted his jacket.

"You're all making assumptions based on old documents.""

I stepped forward.

"Then explain the security footage.""

Robert looked at me.

"What footage?""

"The recording of you entering my mother's study after Vanessa staged the assault.""

For the first time, Robert looked genuinely uncomfortable.

My father turned sharply.

"She staged it?""

"Yes," I said.

"And you threw me out before you checked.""

Marcus lowered his head.

Robert took a breath.

"Vanessa was trying to protect herself.""

I laughed.

"From what? A teenager telling her to put down stolen documents?""

Robert ignored me.

"Marcus, you need to understand that Claire was becoming increasingly paranoid before she died. She believed everyone was against her.""

My father stepped closer.

"Don't talk about my wife.""

Robert's expression changed.

"Your wife?""

He looked toward the basement ceiling.

"Which one, Marcus?""

My father clenched his fists.

"Get out.""

Robert shook his head.

"You're making a mistake.""

Daniel pulled out his phone.

"Actually, Robert, the police are already on their way.""

Robert's face changed.

Then he smiled.

"Police? For what? Looking through old paperwork?""

"For suspected forgery, attempted fraud, and breaking into this property," Daniel replied.

Robert looked at Olivia.

"Tell them what you know.""

Olivia didn't move.

"You told me my father was dead.""

Robert's smile vanished.

"You were a child. You didn't understand.""

"I was twenty when you approached me. You told me Richard had died in prison.""

Robert stared at her.

She continued.

"You said Claire had stolen the money that belonged to my father. You convinced me to help Vanessa retrieve the trust documents.""

My stomach tightened.

"You helped Vanessa?""

Olivia looked down.

"Yes.""

Marcus stood.

"What?""

"I didn't know what she was planning. Robert told me the documents contained proof that Claire had stolen from my father's business.""

"Why would you believe him?"" I asked.

"Because I wanted to know what happened to my mother. I thought he was helping me find the truth.""

Daniel studied her.

"Did you sign anything?""

Olivia nodded.

"A declaration. Robert said it would establish my father's rightful ownership of certain assets.""

Daniel extended his hand.

"Do you have a copy?""

Olivia opened her bag and removed several pages.

Daniel examined them.

Then he stopped at the final sheet.

"This signature is supposed to be yours?""

Olivia nodded.

"Yes.""

Daniel placed the document beside the binder.

I looked between them.

"What?""

He pointed to the signature.

"Someone has added a statement claiming Olivia voluntarily transferred her inheritance rights to Vanessa.""

Olivia's eyes widened.

"I never signed that.""

Robert took a step backward.

Daniel continued.

"The document is dated three weeks ago. But Olivia's signature is identical to one on a form from eleven years ago.""

My father looked at Robert.

"You forged it.""

Robert said nothing.

Then Olivia reached into her bag again.

"There is something else.""

She pulled out a small photograph.

It showed Richard standing beside Vanessa outside a courthouse.

The date was printed on the front.

Two weeks before Vanessa married my father.

On the back, someone had written:

The marriage is the final step. Once Marcus signs the new authorization, the trust belongs to us.

My father stared at the words.

His face twisted with disbelief.

"They planned this from the beginning.""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes.""

My father looked at me.

"Your mother knew.""

I didn't answer.

He sat down again, pressing both hands against his forehead.

"I brought her into our home. I trusted her with you.""

I felt the anger rising in my chest.

"You trusted her more than you trusted me.""

He looked up.

"I know.""

"No, Dad. You don't.""

My voice cracked.

"You had one job. You were supposed to protect me. When she accused me, you didn't even ask me what happened.

You didn't check the cameras. You just threw me outside.""

His eyes filled with tears.

"I was wrong.""

"You were wrong because you believed a woman you barely knew over your own son.""

He looked away.

Before he could answer, sirens sounded outside.

Daniel checked his phone.

"The officers are here.""

Robert suddenly lunged toward the cabinet.

He grabbed the black binder and attempted to run upstairs.

Marcus caught his arm.

The two men crashed against the shelves.

Papers scattered across the floor.

"Let go!"" Robert shouted.

"You lied to me!"" Marcus yelled.

Daniel and I rushed forward.

Olivia pulled the binder away from Robert's hand.

Two police officers entered the basement seconds later.

"Step away from him!""

Robert released Marcus.

The officers restrained him and began questioning everyone.

For a moment, I thought it was over.

Then my father's phone vibrated.

A message appeared on the screen.

The sender was Vanessa.

I know Robert has been arrested. But before you celebrate, Marcus, ask Ethan to check the bottom drawer of Claire's desk.

My father showed me the message.

I looked at him.

"What's in the drawer?""

He shook his head.

"I don't know.""

We returned to the study.

The police were still downstairs interviewing Robert, while Daniel accompanied us upstairs.

I opened the bottom drawer of my mother's desk.

At first, I saw nothing but old stationery and a broken pen.

Then my fingers touched something beneath the wooden lining.

A small envelope.

My name was written across it.

Inside was a photograph and a handwritten note.

The photograph showed my mother holding me as a newborn.

Beside her stood Marcus.

And behind them, partly visible in the hospital doorway, was Richard.

But the note contained something far more disturbing.

Ethan, if you have found this, then the truth about your father's first family has finally come out.

I read the next line.

But there is one more secret I never had the courage to tell Marcus.

My father took the letter from my hands.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he whispered:

"Claire... no.""

The final paragraph was short.

Richard wasn't the only person who survived that night. The child everyone believed was lost was never his.

My father looked up at me.

His lips trembled.

And then the phone rang again.

This time, the caller ID displayed a name.

*Vanessa Bennett.*

My father answered on speaker.

Her voice came through, cold and perfectly composed.

"Marcus, I think it's time you learned who Ethan's real father is.""

My father's hand began to shake.

May you like

And I realized that the next secret wasn't about money, fraud, or a dead man pretending to be alive.

It was about me.
