Chapter 7: The Truth About My Father

"Marcus, I think it's time you learned who Ethan's real father is.""

Vanessa's voice came through the speaker.

Nobody moved.

My father stood beside my mother's desk, holding the letter with both hands. His face had gone completely white.

"What did you just say?"" he whispered.

Vanessa laughed softly.

"You heard me.""

"Don't you dare.""

"Claire kept so many secrets from you, Marcus. Did you really think she told you everything?""

I stepped toward the phone.

"Vanessa, stop playing games. What are you talking about?""

She paused.

Then she said, "Ask your father why Claire refused to let him sign your original birth certificate.""

I turned toward Marcus.

He stared at the floor.

That reaction told me more than Vanessa's words.

"Dad?""

He didn't answer.

"Look at me.""

His eyes finally met mine.

I had never seen him look so frightened.

"Is it true?"" I asked.

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Vanessa continued speaking.

"Your father has spent eighteen years pretending everything was normal. But your mother made sure the truth was hidden.""

Marcus suddenly grabbed the phone.

"Shut your mouth!""

"Why? Are you afraid he'll find out that Richard was right?""

The line disconnected.

My father threw the phone onto the desk.

It struck the wooden surface and fell to the carpet.

I stared at him.

"Tell me.""

Marcus sat down slowly.

Daniel entered the room after hearing the shouting.

"What's happening?""

I didn't take my eyes off my father.

"Apparently, I'm not his biological son.""

Daniel stopped.

Marcus covered his face.

"Ethan, please.""

"Is it true?""

He looked at me.

"Yes.""

The word landed like a physical blow.

I stepped backward.

For eighteen years, I had believed I was Marcus Bennett's son. His name was on my school records, my passport, my birthday cards, and every family photograph.

He had taught me to ride a bicycle.

He had held my hand at my mother's funeral.

He had stood beside my hospital bed when I had pneumonia at age nine.

Now he was telling me that none of it began the way I thought.

"Who is my father?""

Marcus swallowed.

"Richard.""

I stared at him.

My uncle.

The man who had supposedly died eleven years earlier.

The man whose daughter had become my stepmother.

The man who had spent years trying to steal my inheritance.

I couldn't breathe.

"Richard is my biological father?""

Marcus nodded.

"Yes.""

I looked at Daniel.

He seemed just as shocked.

"How?"" I asked.

Marcus leaned forward.

"Before you were born, your mother and I were having problems. I was working constantly. Richard was helping Claire with some of her business affairs. They became close.""

He stopped.

I waited.

"Richard betrayed me," he continued.

"But Claire told me about the pregnancy. She said she had made a mistake, and that she wanted to raise you with me.""

I stared at him.

"And you agreed?""

Marcus nodded.

"I loved your mother. I wanted a family. I told her that I would raise you as my own.""

"Did you know Richard was my biological father when I was born?""

"Yes.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I wanted to protect you.""

I laughed bitterly.

"From what? Knowing who I was?""

Marcus shook his head.

"From Richard. He was already involved in illegal business dealings. He wanted control over Claire's money, and he was furious when she refused to let him near the trust.""

I turned away.

The room seemed suddenly unfamiliar.

My mother's photographs.

The desk where I used to do homework.

The chair where she had read me bedtime stories.

Everything was filled with secrets.

"Did Mom love him?""

Marcus looked down.

"I don't know.""

"Did she love you?""

He closed his eyes.

"Yes. I believe she did.""

"Then why did she have his child?""

Marcus's voice broke.

"Because people make mistakes, Ethan. And sometimes they spend the rest of their lives trying to make things right.""

I stared at the photograph in my hand.

For years, I had thought my mother had died leaving behind a simple family.

Now I was learning that she had spent her final years trying to protect me from the consequences of a secret I hadn't even known existed.

Daniel pulled out a chair.

"Marcus, we need to establish the legal facts. Biological parentage doesn't automatically determine ownership of the trust. Claire's estate documents may have anticipated this situation.""

I looked at him.

"Does that mean my inheritance isn't mine?""

"No," Daniel replied firmly.

"Your mother's will named you as beneficiary. We need to review the original documents, but nothing Vanessa says changes that by itself.""

My father reached toward me.

I stepped away.

"Don't.""

His hand dropped.

"Ethan, you're still my son.""

"Am I?""

His eyes filled.

"I raised you. I loved you from the moment I held you. I never once thought of you as anything else.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

He couldn't answer.

I walked out of the study.

In the hallway, I found Margaret sitting on the staircase.

She looked up immediately.

"Ethan?""

"Did you know?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Yes.""

I stopped.

"Everybody knew except me?""

"Your mother wanted to tell you when you were older.""

"Older than eighteen?""

Margaret shook her head.

"She wanted to wait until you were emotionally ready.""

I laughed.

"Apparently, everyone else got to decide when I was ready for my own life.""

Margaret reached for my hand.

"She loved you.""

"Then why did she leave me with all these secrets?""

Margaret had no answer.

I went outside.

The November wind cut through my hoodie.

I sat on the front steps and stared at the driveway.

A few minutes later, Marcus came outside.

He sat several feet away.

Neither of us spoke.

Finally, he said, "When you were born, Richard wanted to take you.""

I turned.

"What?""

"He told your mother that he would claim you publicly and use the situation to destroy me. Claire refused.""

"Why?""

"Because she knew what kind of man he was becoming. She believed he would use you to get access to her inheritance.""

I looked at him.

"And you?""

"I signed an agreement accepting you as my son. Claire made sure your legal identity was protected.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Did Richard know I was his?""

"Yes.""

"Then why did he stay away?""

Marcus looked toward the street.

"Because Claire made a deal with him.""

"What deal?""

"She promised that if he disappeared and never tried to contact you, she would ensure his daughter received financial support through a separate arrangement.""

I thought of Olivia.

"Vanessa's half-sister?""

Marcus nodded.

"Claire wanted to protect both children.""

I stared at him.

"She knew Vanessa was Richard's daughter.""

"Yes.""

"And you married her anyway.""

"I didn't know who she was.""

I stood up.

"That's the problem, Dad. You never knew anything. You trusted Robert.

You trusted Vanessa. You trusted everyone except the people who were trying to tell you the truth.""

Marcus looked down.

"I know.""

My phone vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of a hospital record.

The document listed my date of birth.

Under biological father, one name appeared.

Richard Bennett.

But someone had highlighted another section.

*Paternity dispute: Additional testing required.*

Beneath it was a handwritten note.

The first result was never final.

I looked at the photograph.

Then another message arrived.

Your mother knew the truth. Marcus doesn't.

I called the number.

A woman answered.

"Ethan?""

"Who is this?""

"My name is Olivia.""

I glanced toward the house.

"You're in the basement.""

"I'm not anymore.""

"What do you mean?""

"I left before the police finished questioning Robert. There's something I need to tell you.""

"What?""

Her voice trembled.

"Richard isn't your biological father.""

I stopped breathing.

"Then who is?""

Olivia whispered:

"The man Vanessa has been calling her real father.""

The call ended.

I looked toward the house.

And through the front window, I saw Marcus standing beside my mother's desk.

He was holding another photograph.

One I hadn't seen before.

A photograph of my mother standing beside Daniel Reed.

Both of them were smiling.

May you like

And on the back, in my mother's handwriting, were four words:

The truth about Ethan.
