Chapter 3: The Signature of a Dead Woman
I didn't sleep.
By eight the next morning, I was sitting in Daniel Reed's office, watching him examine the screenshots on my phone.
His office occupied the top floor of a modest building downtown. Rain tapped against the windows, and the smell of fresh paper and espresso filled the room.
Daniel had barely touched his coffee.
He enlarged the photograph of Robert Hale standing inside my mother's study.
"Where did you get this?""
"The security backup.""
"Did anyone else see it?""
"No.""
"Good. Don't send it to anyone yet.""
I leaned across his desk.
"That's my mother's signature.""
Daniel studied the document.
"Yes.""
"But the date is six months after she died.""
"I can see that.""
"How is that possible?""
He removed his glasses.
"Ethan, I need you to understand something. Your mother had a complicated estate. She created several protections because she was concerned about what might happen after her death.""
"Concerned about who?""
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he unlocked a cabinet behind his desk and removed a thick envelope.
It was cream-colored, sealed with dark blue wax.
My name was written across the front.
In my mother's handwriting.
I reached for it.
Daniel placed one hand over the envelope.
"Before you open this, there's something I need to tell you.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
"Your mother didn't leave everything to your father.""
I felt the room shift.
"What do you mean?""
"She established an irrevocable trust. The majority of her assets were transferred into it before she died. Your father was named a temporary trustee, but he was never the sole beneficiary.""
"Then who was?""
"You.""
I stared at him.
"Me?""
Daniel nodded.
"Your mother wanted you to have financial security. She also wanted to make sure that nobody could take advantage of you while you were still a minor.""
I sat back.
"How much?""
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
"At the time of her death, the trust contained approximately 8.4 million dollars in property, investments, and other assets.""
I couldn't speak.
Eight million dollars.
My father had told me there was enough money for college.
He had never mentioned anything like that.
"Where is it now?""
"That's the problem.""
Daniel opened a folder.
"Several assets were transferred over the last year. The transactions were presented as administrative restructuring.""
"Who authorized them?""
"Your father signed some documents. Others were submitted using a power of attorney that should have expired.""
I frowned.
"Who held the power of attorney?""
Daniel looked directly at me.
"Robert Hale.""
I stood up.
"You're telling me my father's best friend has been stealing my mother's money?""
"I'm telling you that the records suggest serious misconduct. We need to establish exactly what happened before making accusations.""
"And Vanessa?""
Daniel turned another page.
"She has been listed as the intended recipient of two proposed transfers.""
I stared at him.
"She was trying to take my inheritance?""
"Possibly.""
I paced across the office.
Suddenly, everything made sense.
Vanessa's obsession with my mother's study.
Her questions about the trust.
Her anger whenever I mentioned the estate documents.
She hadn't simply wanted me out of the house.
She wanted me out of the way.
I turned toward Daniel.
"Why did my mother trust Robert?""
"Because he was one of her closest professional advisers. He handled her business interests for years.""
"Did she know something was wrong?""
Daniel looked down at the sealed envelope.
"That is what I believe this letter may explain.""
He pushed it toward me.
My hands trembled as I broke the seal.
Inside was a handwritten letter and a smaller envelope containing a USB drive.
I unfolded the letter.
My dearest Ethan,
If Daniel has given you this letter, something has happened that I hoped would never happen.
I know you may be angry. I know you may feel betrayed. But please remember that your father is not a bad man simply because he is capable of making a terrible mistake.
There are people who know how to use grief. They understand that a person who has lost someone will sometimes accept comfort without asking where it comes from.
If Vanessa is in your life when you read this, be careful.
I stopped.
Daniel watched me quietly.
I continued.
I met her twice before I became ill. Both times, she asked questions about my finances. She claimed she was helping Marcus organize his business affairs, but something about her questions troubled me.
I later discovered that Robert had been sharing information about my trust with someone outside my legal team.
I could not prove who it was.
So I created a final safeguard.
Ethan, the person who attempts to access your inheritance before your twenty-first birthday will trigger a review of the entire trust. That review includes a record of every person who has tried to influence its administration.
The truth is preserved in the enclosed recording.
Do not confront anyone until you have seen it.
And remember this: the man who speaks to Vanessa may not be the man your father believes him to be.
My hands went cold.
I read the final sentence again.
"Daniel," I whispered.
"What does she mean?""
He looked at the USB drive.
"I don't know. But I think we should find out.""
He connected the drive to his computer.
A single video file appeared.
The date on the file was three weeks before my mother's death.
Daniel clicked play.
My mother appeared on the screen.
She was sitting in her study, wearing the blue cardigan I remembered from my childhood. Her face was thinner than I remembered, but her eyes were sharp.
She looked directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this, then someone has tried to interfere with Ethan's trust.""
She took a breath.
"Marcus, if you're watching, I need you to listen carefully. I know you love me. I know you would never knowingly hurt our son. But you have trusted the wrong people.""
Daniel paused the video.
"Wait.""
"What?""
He rewound it.
My mother continued.
"Robert has been speaking with someone behind your back. Someone who has been asking about the money, the properties, and the documents I signed.""
She leaned closer to the camera.
"I discovered that the person wasn't interested in helping our family. He was interested in controlling it.""
Then she said a name.
A name I wasn't expecting.
Daniel's face lost all color.
I looked at him.
"What?""
He didn't answer.
The video continued.
My mother held up a photograph.
It showed Robert Hale standing beside another man.
A man wearing a military medal pinned to his jacket.
My mother spoke again.
"Robert believes he is protecting himself. But the man he's working for has a history of taking everything from people who trust him.""
I recognized the second man.
Not from the photograph.
From the family portraits in our house.
From the framed pictures in my father's office.
From the man who had attended my mother's funeral and stood beside my father for the entire service.
Daniel slowly turned toward me.
"Do you know who that is?""
I nodded.
My throat felt painfully tight.
"That's my uncle.""
"Which uncle?""
I stared at the screen.
"Uncle Richard. My father's older brother.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"That's impossible.""
"Why?""
"Because Richard Bennett has been dead for eleven years.""
The room went silent.
I looked back at the screen.
My mother's voice came through the speakers one final time.
"Marcus, if Richard is alive, then everything you know about his death is a lie.""
Daniel stopped the video.
Neither of us moved.
Then his office phone rang.
He answered it.
"Daniel Reed.""
A woman's voice came through the speaker.
I recognized it immediately.
Vanessa.
"Daniel, I know Ethan is with you.""
Daniel glanced at me.
"How did you get this number?""
Vanessa laughed softly.
"That isn't important. What's important is that you give me the original trust documents.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"I have no idea what you're talking about.""
"Don't insult me. Claire made copies of everything before she died. I want the sealed file, and I want it today.""
Daniel said nothing.
Then Vanessa lowered her voice.
"And Daniel? Tell Ethan something for me.""
I leaned closer to the phone.
"What?""
She paused.
"His father isn't the only person who can throw him away.""
The line went dead.
Daniel slowly put down the receiver.
I looked at the frozen image of my mother on the computer screen.
My father had thrown me out because he believed I had attacked his wife.
But the woman he had chosen over me was working with a man who was supposed to be dead.
And now she knew I had found the letter.
Daniel stood up and locked his office door.
"Ethan, we have a serious problem.""
Before I could answer, his computer chimed.
A new email had arrived.
The sender's name was Marcus Bennett.
My father.
The subject line contained only six words.
*I watched the footage. Call me now.*
And attached to the email was a photograph of Vanessa standing beside Robert Hale.
But it wasn't the photograph from the security camera.
It had been taken that morning.
Outside Daniel's office building.
May you like
They were both looking directly at the entrance.
And Robert was holding a photograph of me.
