Chapter 8: The Man My Mother Trusted
I found Daniel in the study.
He was examining the original estate documents when I placed the photograph in front of him.
"Who is this?""
He looked at the image.
Then he slowly removed his glasses.
"Where did you get that?""
"Mom's desk.""
He turned the photograph over.
His face changed when he read the handwriting.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he pulled out a chair.
"Ethan, sit down.""
I remained standing.
"Are you my biological father?""
Daniel looked at me.
He didn't deny it.
That silence was enough.
My knees weakened.
"You're kidding.""
"No.""
I grabbed the edge of the desk.
"All this time?""
Daniel nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
I stared at him.
The man who had taught me to fish.
The man who had attended my mother's funeral.
The man who had just spent the morning helping me uncover the fraud.
He was my father.
Not Richard.
Not Marcus.
Daniel.
"Why?"" I whispered.
Daniel looked toward the window.
"Your mother and I were together before she married Marcus. We were young. We loved each other, but I was preparing to leave town for law school. Claire didn't want to wait for me.""
I shook my head.
"That's not an explanation.""
"No. It's only the beginning.""
He opened a drawer and removed a sealed envelope.
"Your mother wrote this after you were born. She gave it to me with strict instructions.""
I stared at it.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because she asked me not to.""
"Even when I was thrown out?""
Daniel looked pained.
"I was trying to protect you.""
I laughed.
"Everyone keeps saying that.""
He didn't respond.
I picked up the envelope.
My name was written across the front.
The same handwriting.
The same blue ink.
I opened it.
My darling Ethan,
There are truths that are difficult to explain, especially when the people involved are afraid of losing someone they love.
Daniel is your biological father.
I stopped reading.
My hands shook.
Marcus knows this. He accepted you as his son because he loved me and because he knew Richard would never provide you with the safe childhood you deserved.
Daniel wanted to be part of your life, but we agreed that your identity should remain protected until you were old enough to understand the circumstances.
I never wanted you to believe that blood was the only thing that made a family.
Marcus chose to raise you. Daniel chose to protect you from a distance. Both decisions were made out of love.
But there is another reason I kept this secret.
I turned the page.
Richard discovered the truth shortly before I died. He wanted to use your biological parentage to challenge the trust and create a legal dispute over my estate.
He believed that if he could prove you were not Marcus's biological son, he could force the trust into litigation.
That was why I changed the estate plan.
Ethan, the person who protects you is not always the person whose name appears on your birth certificate.
And the person who shares your blood is not always the person who deserves your trust.
I lowered the letter.
Daniel looked at me.
"Your mother wanted you to know when the time was right.""
I wiped my face.
"Did you ever want to be my father?""
His expression crumpled.
"Every single day.""
"Then why did you stay away?""
"Because I believed that Marcus could give you something I couldn't. A stable home. A family. A father who could be there every morning.""
I shook my head.
"You were there. You just pretended you weren't.""
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"I know.""
I sat down.
For several minutes, neither of us spoke.
Then I asked, "Does Marcus know?""
Daniel nodded.
"He knew before you were born.""
"Does he know about this photograph?""
"No. Claire asked me to keep it hidden until the trust was reviewed.""
I looked at the letter.
"Why did Vanessa tell me Richard was my father?""
"Because she was using the information Richard had given her. She may not know the entire truth.""
"Then she's been lying about everything.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Not everything. She knows your mother's estate was built to protect you. She knows that Richard has been trying to gain control of it. And she knows that if the trust is challenged successfully, she could receive a significant financial benefit.""
I frowned.
"How?""
Daniel opened another document.
"Your mother included a clause that protects the trust from fraudulent claims. If someone attempts to seize control through deception, the trustee must notify the independent review board.""
"Who is the trustee now?""
Daniel turned the page.
"An independent financial institution. Your father was only a temporary administrator.""
I looked up.
"Then why was he signing documents?""
"Because Robert convinced him that the estate needed restructuring. Marcus believed he was helping preserve your mother's assets.""
I remembered the forged signature.
The missing money.
The notebook.
"What happens now?""
Daniel closed the folder.
"Now we stop them.""
Before I could ask what he meant, my father entered the study.
He looked exhausted.
His eyes moved from Daniel to the open letter.
"Have you told him?""
Daniel nodded.
Marcus stopped.
For a long moment, he simply stared at me.
Then he said, "I'm sorry.""
I looked at him.
"For which part?""
He swallowed.
"For everything.""
He pulled out the chair opposite me.
"I knew Daniel was your biological father. Claire told me before you were born. I agreed to raise you because I loved her, and because I knew you deserved a father who wouldn't abandon you.""
I looked at Daniel.
Then back at Marcus.
"Did you ever resent me?""
Marcus shook his head immediately.
"Never.""
"Did you ever look at me and see Richard?""
His eyes filled.
"Sometimes, when you were little, I saw your eyes. But every time you laughed, I saw Claire. And every time you called me Dad, I knew I was exactly where I wanted to be.""
My throat tightened.
He continued.
"I made one terrible mistake last night. I allowed Vanessa to use my fear of losing another person to manipulate me.""
I looked away.
"That doesn't excuse it.""
"No. It doesn't.""
He reached into his pocket and placed something on the desk.
My grandfather's silver watch.
The one he had given me on my eighteenth birthday.
"I found this in your old bedroom. Vanessa had packed it with some of the things she intended to sell.""
I picked it up.
Marcus looked at me.
"I want you to have it.""
I closed my fingers around the watch.
"Thank you.""
It was the first time I had spoken kindly to him since he threw me out.
He noticed.
But he didn't try to turn it into forgiveness.
Daniel's phone rang.
He answered, listened, then stood.
"That's the independent trustee's legal department.""
Marcus looked at him.
"What happened?""
"They received a request to freeze the trust assets this morning.""
"From whom?""
Daniel checked the email.
"Vanessa.""
My stomach tightened.
"Can she do that?""
"Not without supporting documents. But she has submitted a claim alleging that Ethan's identity was concealed through fraud.""
I stood.
"She's using the paternity secret.""
Daniel nodded.
"She's trying to make the entire estate look fraudulent.""
My father slammed his hand against the desk.
"She won't get away with it.""
Daniel held up another document.
"There's a problem. The request includes a signed statement from someone claiming to be Claire's former personal physician.""
I looked at the signature.
Dr. Samuel Grant.
The man who had treated my mother during her final illness.
Marcus shook his head.
"That's impossible. He died three years ago.""
Daniel studied the document.
"Then someone has forged his signature.""
A message appeared on my phone.
It was from Olivia.
Ethan, I found the original medical records. Your mother never authorized a paternity test. The result Vanessa has been using was manufactured.
Another message followed.
But that's not the worst part.
I called her.
She answered immediately.
"Where are you?"" I asked.
"At the courthouse.""
"Why?""
"Because I'm filing a statement against Robert and Vanessa.""
"Do you have the original records?""
"Yes.""
"Then bring them to Daniel.""
Olivia hesitated.
"Ethan, I can't.""
"Why?""
"Because Vanessa is here.""
I looked at Marcus.
He moved closer.
"What is it?"" he asked.
Olivia's voice became frantic.
"She's with a man I haven't seen since I was a child.""
I gripped the phone.
"Who?""
Olivia whispered:
"Richard.""
Then I heard a loud crash.
May you like
A man's voice shouted in the background.
And Olivia screamed.
