Chapter 4: The Truth She Buried
I carried the envelope home but didn’t open it.
Not because I was afraid of the result.
Because some part of me already knew.
The truth had been sitting in front of me for years.
I just refused to look at it.
Laura was waiting in the kitchen.
She saw the envelope in my hand.
Her face turned pale.
“You met him.””
“Yes.””
“And he gave you that?””
“Yes.””
She sat down.
“I’m sorry.””
Those two words had become meaningless.
“I need you to stop apologizing and start explaining.””
She nodded slowly.
“The DNA test showed Jay is Ethan’s biological father.””
The room went silent.
Even though I expected it, hearing it from her felt like being hit.
I grabbed the chair.
“But you already knew.””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Six months ago.””
“Why?””
She started crying.
“Because Jay contacted me.””
I looked at her.
“He contacted you?””
“He was sick. He wanted to know if Ethan was his.””
“And you agreed to the test.””
“Yes.””
“Without telling me.””
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
She looked at me.
“Of losing you.””
I laughed quietly.
“You thought hiding my son’s biological father would save our marriage?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I knew it was wrong.””
“Then why?””
“Because there was more.””
That stopped me.
“What more?””
Laura reached into a drawer and pulled out a small box.
Inside was a stack of old letters.
“I never showed these to anyone.””
I picked one up.
The handwriting was Jay’s.
The date was five years ago.
Before Ethan was born.
I read the first line.
*Laura, I know you think I abandoned you, but I swear I never received your messages.*
I looked at her.
“What is this?””
“Jay didn’t leave because he wanted to.””
“What?””
“He thought I didn’t want him involved.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“Why would he think that?””
She looked terrified.
“Because someone deleted his messages.””
“Who?””
She didn’t answer.
“Laura.””
Her voice dropped.
“Your mother.””
I froze.
“My mother?””
She nodded.
“She found out Jay was Ethan’s father before you knew.””
I felt like the air disappeared.
“My mother knew?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Laura looked down.
“Because she was afraid you would leave me.””
I backed away.
“This is insane.””
“I know.””
“She manipulated both of you?””
“She thought she was protecting you.””
I stared at the letters.
My entire family history was changing in front of me.
Then my phone rang.
It was my mother.
I answered.
“Mom.””
Her voice immediately sounded nervous.
“Daniel, your wife told you, didn’t she?””
My grip tightened.
“Told me what?””
Silence.
Then:
“Everything.””
I felt my anger explode.
“You knew?””
“Daniel, listen—”
“No. You listen. You let me believe I was Ethan’s father.””
“You are his father.””
“Biologically?””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I hung up.
For the first time, I looked at Laura differently.
Not as a liar.
Not as a victim.
But as someone who had allowed a lie to grow because it was easier than facing the truth.
The next morning, Ethan came running into the room holding his bicycle helmet.
“Dad! Can Uncle Jay watch me ride today?””
I looked at Laura.
She looked at me.
Neither of us spoke.
Then Ethan smiled.
“He said he would teach me tricks.””
My heart sank.
Because my son didn’t know there was a battle happening around him.
He only knew two men cared about him.
But then my phone buzzed.
A message from Jay.
*Daniel, we need to talk before Laura tells you the rest.*
I stared at the screen.
The rest?
I typed back.
*What else is there?*
The reply came immediately.
One sentence.
May you like
One sentence that made my blood run cold.
*The DNA test you saw was not the only test Laura took.*
