Chapter 3: The Secret Before Me

I always believed my marriage began when Laura walked down the aisle toward me.

I remembered the white dress.

The shaking hands.

The way she smiled when she saw me waiting.

But standing in our living room that night, I realized I might have only known the middle of her story.

Not the beginning.

“Tell me everything,” I said.

Laura sat down slowly.

For the first time in years, she looked like someone who was afraid of losing something.

Not someone who was hiding something.

“I met Jay when I was twenty-two,” she said.

I stayed standing.

“Before me.””

“Yes.””

“Keep going.””

She looked at the floor.

“He was my first serious relationship.””

I swallowed.

“And Ethan?””

Her eyes closed.

“When I found out I was pregnant, Jay disappeared.””

I frowned.

“You told me Ethan’s father left before you knew you were pregnant.””

“I thought he had.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Laura wiped away tears.

“Jay found out later. He came back.””

I stared at her.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because by then, you were already in my life.””

I felt anger rising.

“You mean I was already taking care of a child you knew might not be mine?””

She flinched.

“I loved you.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No,” she whispered.

“It isn’t.””

The honesty hurt more than another lie.

I walked to the window.

Outside, Ethan was riding his bike in the driveway.

My neighbor was helping him balance.

My son.

The word still felt right.

No matter what a DNA test said.

“I never wanted him to replace you,” Laura said.

“Then why did he come here?””

She looked away.

“Because he wanted to see Ethan.””

“Behind my back?””

“He was afraid you would take Ethan away.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So instead you both lied to me?””

She had no defense.

That night, I met Jay at a quiet coffee shop across town.

He was exactly how I remembered him.

Calm.

Confident.

Like he had been waiting years for this moment.

“You look angry,” he said.

“I am.””

“I understand.””

“No, you don’t.””

He looked down.

“You’re right.””

That surprised me.

“I’m not here to fight you, Daniel.””

“Then why are you here?””

“Because I want to know my son.””

I stared at him.

“You don’t get to disappear for five years and suddenly become a father.””

His face tightened.

“I know.””

“Then why?””

“Because I was sick.””

I stopped.

“What?””

Jay looked away.

“I was diagnosed with a serious illness after leaving Laura. I thought I was going to die. I didn’t want my son to remember me as a broken man.””

I didn’t know what to say.

“Then why come back?””

“Because I got better.””

He leaned forward.

“And because I found out Laura told Ethan about me.””

My heart sank.

“What exactly did she tell him?””

“That I was his uncle.””

The same word.

Uncle Jay.

The bicycle.

The secret.

I looked at him carefully.

“You bought him things?””

“Sometimes.””

“How often?””

He hesitated.

“More than Laura wanted.””

The anger returned.

“You were around my child.””

“I know.””

“You watched him grow.””

“Yes.””

“While I thought I was the only father he had.””

Jay lowered his eyes.

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

“Then what did you want?””

He was quiet.

Then he reached into his jacket.

He placed an envelope on the table.

“What is that?””

“The truth.””

I didn’t touch it.

“DNA results.””

My chest tightened.

“Why do you have them?””

“Because Laura had them done six months ago.””

The world seemed to tilt.

Six months.

She had known.

Six months ago.

I looked at the envelope.

Then at Jay.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Jay’s voice became softer.

“Because the results didn’t only prove I was Ethan’s father.””

He paused.

“They proved something else.””

My hands went cold.

“What?””

May you like

Jay looked directly into my eyes.

“They proved Ethan was never the reason Laura was afraid of telling you.””
