Chapter 1: The Bicycle That Broke Christmas

“Whoa! A red bike, just like Uncle Jay said!””

Those were the first words my five-year-old son said after I surprised him with the Christmas gift I had spent three months saving for. I had imagined his laughter, his tiny hands gripping the handlebars, and the pride I would feel watching him ride for the first time.

I never imagined that a bright red bicycle would be the thing that destroyed the life I thought I knew.

I walked into the living room that Christmas morning carrying a huge smile.

The bicycle was hidden under a white cloth beside the fireplace, wrapped with a giant silver ribbon. The tree lights reflected off the ornaments, the smell of cinnamon rolls filled the house, and for a few seconds, everything felt perfect.

My son, Ethan, stood there in his dinosaur pajamas, bouncing on his toes.

“Dad, is that mine?”” he asked, pointing at the covered shape.

I laughed and shook my head.

“You’ll have to wait and see, champ.””

My wife, Laura, sat on the couch holding a mug of coffee. She smiled at me, but something about it felt distracted. I ignored it.

I thought she was just tired. We had both been exhausted lately.

I grabbed the cloth.

“Merry Christmas, buddy.””

I pulled it away.

Ethan’s eyes widened.

The room exploded with his excitement.

“A bike!”” he screamed.

“A real bike!””

He ran toward it and touched the red frame like it was made of gold.

I felt my chest fill with happiness.

Then he said it.

“Just like Uncle Jay said.””

My hand froze on the bicycle seat.

The smile disappeared from my face before I could stop it.

Slowly, I turned toward Laura.

She was already staring at me.

The coffee cup slipped from her fingers and hit the table.

“Uncle Jay?”” I repeated.

Ethan looked up, confused.

“Yeah,” he said.

“Uncle Jay told me red bikes are the fastest. He said his was red when he was little.””

I forced a laugh.

“Buddy, what are you talking about?””

Ethan shrugged.

“Uncle Jay’s bike. He showed me pictures.””

The room suddenly felt colder.

I looked at Laura.

“Who is Uncle Jay?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was when my stomach dropped.

Because Laura had a brother named Michael. A cousin named Ryan. Friends from college whose names I knew.

But there was no Jay.

Not one person in our family was named Jay.

“Laura,” I said quietly.

“Who is Jay?””

She looked away.

That hurt more than anger would have.

“Ethan,” she said quickly, standing up, “why don’t you go get your new helmet from your room?””

“But Mom—”

“Now, sweetheart.””

The way she said it made him run.

The moment he disappeared upstairs, the silence became unbearable.

I stared at my wife.

“Someone named Jay sleeps over when I’m working overnight?””

Her face changed.

Fear.

Not confusion.

Not shock.

Fear.

“Listen to me,” she whispered.

“No,” I said.

“You listen to me. My son just told me a man I’ve never heard of comes into our house when I’m gone.””

“It’s not what you think.””

I laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“That’s what people say when it’s exactly what it looks like.””

Laura wiped her eyes.

“Please don’t do this here. It’s Christmas.””

I looked around the room.

The decorations.

The gifts.

The family photos on the wall.

Everything I had built.

“How long?”” I asked.

She didn’t answer.

“How long has he been coming here?””

Her silence was louder than any confession.

Then my phone buzzed on the table.

A notification appeared.

It was from our home security app.

A camera alert.

Someone had accessed the saved recordings.

I opened it.

The newest video was from three nights earlier.

The night I worked a double shift.

The camera showed our front door opening at 11:47 p.m.

A man walked inside.

Tall.

Dark jacket.

Familiar.

Then he turned toward the camera.

I stopped breathing.

Because I knew that face.

I had seen him before.

Just not in my home.

The video loaded the name attached to the account.

*Jay Carter.*

And underneath it was a message from my wife.

“Delete this before my husband finds out.””
