Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Name
I didn’t sleep that night.
I sat alone in the kitchen long after Ethan went to bed, staring at the security footage until the screen went black.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the same thing.
A stranger walking into my house.
A stranger who knew my son.
A stranger my wife had been hiding.
The next morning, Christmas decorations still hung everywhere, almost mocking me.
Ethan came downstairs wearing his new helmet.
“Dad, can we ride today?””
I looked at his excited face and forced myself to smile.
“Of course, buddy.””
He had no idea his innocent words had shattered his father’s world.
Laura avoided looking at me throughout breakfast.
Finally, I put my fork down.
“Ethan, why don’t you go draw a picture for Grandma?””
He grabbed his crayons happily.
“Okay!””
As soon as he left, I turned toward Laura.
“I want the truth.””
She stared into her coffee.
“His name is Jay.””
“I know his name.””
“No, you don’t know anything.””
That sentence cut deeper than she probably intended.
I leaned forward.
“Then explain.””
She rubbed her forehead.
“Jay and I knew each other before you and I met.””
“From where?””
“College.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“You told me you barely dated anyone before me.””
“I was embarrassed.””
“Embarrassed enough to hide a man who visits our house?””
She looked hurt.
“It wasn’t like that.””
“Then what was it like?””
She had no answer.
I stood up and walked toward the hallway.
“Where is he now?””
“Gone.””
“Where?””
“I don’t know.””
I turned around.
“You expect me to believe that?””
Laura’s eyes filled with tears.
“I made mistakes.””
That was the first time she admitted anything.
Not everything.
Just enough.
I grabbed my coat.
“Where are you going?””
“To find out who has been walking into my house.””
I drove straight to the place I remembered seeing Jay before.
My workplace.
Three months earlier, I had noticed a man waiting outside the hospital parking lot. He had approached me while I was leaving after my overnight shift.
“Are you Daniel Miller?”” he asked.
I remembered because his voice had felt strangely familiar.
“Yes. Who are you?””
He smiled.
“Just someone who knows Laura.””
At the time, I thought nothing of it.
Now every detail mattered.
I searched through old messages on my phone.
There it was.
A forgotten number.
A text from months ago.
*Stop pretending you don’t know what you did.*
I had assumed it was spam.
Now I knew it wasn’t.
I called the number.
Someone answered after one ring.
“Daniel.””
My blood ran cold.
“You know who I am?””
A pause.
Then a deep voice.
“I’ve known who you are for years.””
“Jay?””
“Yes.””
“Why are you in my house?””
Silence.
Then he said something I never expected.
“Because that’s my son.””
I almost dropped the phone.
“What did you say?””
“You heard me.””
“No. Ethan is my son.””
Jay sighed.
“Ask Laura about the DNA test.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“You’re lying.””
“Am I?””
“Why would I believe anything you say?””
“Because she never told you the truth about what happened five years ago.””
My heart pounded.
Five years ago.
The year Ethan was born.
The year Laura and I got married.
“Where are you?””
“I’ll meet you.””
“Answer me.””
But he had already hung up.
I stood in the parking lot, frozen.
A million thoughts attacked my mind.
Was Jay a liar?
Was he trying to destroy my family?
Or was my entire marriage built on something I never knew?
When I returned home, Laura was waiting by the door.
She looked at my face.
And immediately knew.
“You talked to him,” she whispered.
I stared at her.
“Why did Jay say Ethan is his son?””
Her entire body went still.
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“Because before you met Ethan…”
She stopped.
May you like
Her eyes filled with tears.
“…I made the biggest mistake of my life.””
