Chapter 11: The Secret Jay Carried
The voice on the phone belonged to a woman I had never met, but somehow it felt like she had been waiting years to say those words.
“He wasn’t running away,” Rebecca repeated.
“He was running from someone.””
I stepped away from the driveway.
“Who?””
There was a pause.
“I think you deserve to hear this from me.””
My eyes moved toward Jay.
He was helping Ethan adjust his bicycle helmet, laughing as my son complained that it was too tight.
For a second, everything looked normal.
Then I remembered.
Normal was just another word for a story people told before the truth arrived.
“Where can we meet?”” I asked.
Rebecca gave me an address.
An hour later, I sat across from her in a quiet coffee shop.
She looked older than Jay.
Tired.
Like someone who had carried a burden that wasn’t hers.
“I’m sorry for bringing this into your life,” she said.
I shook my head.
“It was already in my life.””
She looked down.
“Jay didn’t leave Laura because he stopped loving her.””
“I know.””
“No, Daniel. You don’t.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Rebecca folded her hands.
“Jay disappeared because someone threatened him.””
The words landed heavily.
“Who?””
She looked at me.
“Your mother.””
My chest tightened.
Again.
“My mother?””
Rebecca nodded.
“After Jay found out about Ethan, he wanted to fight for his son.””
“That makes sense.””
“But your mother found out.””
I sighed.
“I know what happened.””
“No.””
Her voice became softer.
“You know what she admitted.””
I stayed silent.
Rebecca continued.
“You don’t know what she did.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What else?””
“Your mother didn’t just delete messages.””
I waited.
“She threatened Jay.””
My hands tightened around my coffee cup.
“What did she say?””
Rebecca looked away.
“She told him if he came near Ethan, she would make sure he never saw him.””
I couldn’t speak.
“She said you were building a family. She said Jay had already abandoned Laura once, and he would destroy your life if he came back.””
I shook my head.
“My mother wouldn’t…”
But the sentence died.
Because I knew she would.
I had already seen what she did.
Rebecca reached into her bag and pulled out an envelope.
“She gave me this after Jay left.””
I opened it.
Inside was a printed message.
From my mother.
*Stay away from Daniel’s family. If you come back, you will regret it.*
I stared at the words.
Not because they surprised me.
Because they confirmed something I didn’t want to accept.
My mother had been protecting me in the most damaging way possible.
“She thought she was saving you,” Rebecca said.
“She destroyed everything.””
“Yes.””
I looked out the window.
“Why didn’t Jay tell me?””
Rebecca smiled sadly.
“Because he didn’t want Ethan to grow up knowing adults hated each other because of him.””
That sentence broke something inside me.
Because Jay had done one thing right.
He protected the child.
Even when everyone else failed.
When I returned home, Jay was sitting on the porch.
He looked up.
“You talked to Rebecca.””
I nodded.
“You knew she would tell me.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me yourself?””
Jay looked at the ground.
“Because I was ashamed.””
“Of what?””
“That I let someone scare me away.””
I sat beside him.
“You lost five years.””
“I know.””
“You missed everything.””
His eyes became wet.
“I know.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then I asked:
“Why did you really come back?””
Jay looked at Ethan riding in circles.
“Because I saw a picture of him.””
“And?””
“And I realized my son had my smile.””
He swallowed.
“I didn’t want to die without knowing him.””
The word hung between us.
Die.
I looked at him.
“You still think about that?””
“Every day.””
The next morning, Jay had a doctor’s appointment.
I didn’t ask.
But I noticed the fear in his face.
That night, Laura found me looking at old photos.
“You’re starting to understand him.””
I nodded.
“I am.””
She sat beside me.
“Does that change how you feel about me?””
I thought about it.
“Yes.””
Her face fell.
I continued.
“It changes everything.””
She looked hurt.
“But not because I love you less.””
I turned toward her.
“Because I finally understand how much damage secrets can do.””
She nodded.
Then my phone rang.
It was Jay’s doctor.
I answered.
And after only ten seconds, my entire body went cold.
“Mr. Miller?””
“Yes?””
“We need you to come to the hospital.””
“Why?””
May you like
The doctor hesitated.
“Because Jay’s condition has changed.””
