Chapter 9: The Boy Who Ran Back to Me
The words didn’t make sense.
“Noah escaped?””
Ellis stared at his phone.
For the first time since I had known him, he looked completely lost.
Daniel noticed too.
“What happened?””
Ellis ignored him.
He pressed another button on his phone.
Noah’s video feed appeared again.
But this time, the room was empty.
The chair was overturned.
The camera was shaking.
My son was gone.
A wave of relief hit me so hard my knees almost gave out.
He was alive.
He was free.
But then fear returned.
Because if Noah escaped Ellis…
Where would he go?
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Noah.
*Mom, I’m coming to you.*
I covered my mouth.
Daniel looked at me.
“What?””
I showed him.
His eyes widened.
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because Ellis controls every route out of this area.””
I looked at the screen.
My son had escaped a man who had manipulated an entire courtroom.
Impossible didn’t exist anymore.
Not when it came to Noah.
Ellis suddenly moved toward me.
“Give me the phone.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
His expression changed.
“Sabrina.””
“No.””
For years, I had let him speak over me.
I had let him decide what was best.
I had let him make me feel small.
But not anymore.
“You don’t get to take anything else from me.””
The words surprised even me.
Ellis stared.
Then he laughed quietly.
“You think this changes anything?””
“Yes.””
“What?””
I looked at him.
“My son knows the truth.””
That was the one thing Ellis couldn’t control.
Knowledge.
Noah knew.
And Noah had chosen to fight.
Sirens sounded outside.
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked toward the window.
“Who called the police?””
Ellis slowly looked at me.
“You?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He answered.
A few seconds later, his face changed.
“What?””
He listened.
Then looked at me.
“Sabrina…”
“What?””
“It’s Noah.””
My heart stopped.
“He’s at the police station.””
I almost collapsed from relief.
“Is he okay?””
Daniel nodded.
“He’s safe.””
Ellis stepped back.
For the first time, fear replaced anger.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“You lost.””
He stared at me.
“You don’t understand.””
“I understand everything.””
“No, you don’t.””
His voice became desperate.
“There’s something Noah found.””
“What?””
Ellis looked toward the window.
Then whispered:
“Something that will destroy all of us.””
The police arrived minutes later.
Ellis was questioned.
Daniel handed over the evidence.
And for the first time in years, Ellis Carter wasn’t the most powerful person in the room.
He was just a man afraid of what was coming.
I rushed to the station.
And when I saw Noah sitting there, wrapped in a blanket, my heart broke.
He looked smaller.
Younger.
Like the twelve-year-old child he was supposed to be.
The moment he saw me, he stood.
“Mom.””
I didn’t say anything.
I just ran to him.
He collapsed into my arms.
“I’m sorry.””
I held him tightly.
“You don’t have to apologize.””
“But I hurt you.””
I closed my eyes.
“You saved me.””
He started crying.
“I thought you hated me.””
My heart shattered.
“How could I hate you?””
“Because I chose Dad.””
I pulled back.
“Noah, you didn’t choose him.””
I wiped his tears.
“You chose me.””
He looked confused.
Then I noticed something.
A small envelope in his hand.
“What is that?””
Noah looked at it.
His face became serious.
“This is why Dad was so scared.””
I opened it.
Inside was a document.
At the top was a name.
My father’s name.
And below it was a sentence that changed everything.
*Inheritance transfer agreement: Primary beneficiary — Sabrina Carter. Secondary beneficiary — Noah Carter.*
But underneath was another line.
One that made my blood run cold.
*Activation condition: If Ellis Carter attempts to separate mother and son through deception, the full investigation file becomes public.*
I looked at Noah.
My son whispered:
“Mom… Dad wasn’t trying to take me away from you.””
I frowned.
“Then what was he trying to do?””
Noah looked toward the police hallway.
May you like
And answered:
“He was trying to stop me from finding out who he really was.””
