Chapter 5: The Truth Behind Noah’s Choice
I didn’t sleep that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Noah standing in the courtroom.
His expression.
His silence.
The way he refused to look at me.
For days, I had believed my son had chosen money over me.
But now I wondered something much worse.
How long had he been carrying that pain alone?
At six in the morning, I drove to the coffee shop Daniel chose for our meeting.
It was a small place hidden between two office buildings.
The kind of place where nobody would notice two people having a serious conversation.
Daniel was already there.
He looked nothing like the powerful investigator I imagined.
He looked tired.
Older.
Like someone who had spent months running from something.
When he saw me, he stood.
“Sabrina.””
I sat across from him.
“Tell me everything.””
Daniel placed a folder on the table.
“This is what Noah found.””
I opened it.
Inside were copies of financial records.
Company transfers.
Fake businesses.
Hidden accounts.
And signatures.
My eyes stopped on one name.
Ellis Carter.
“He did all this?””
Daniel nodded.
“Ellis built a public image as a successful businessman. But behind the scenes, he moved money through shell companies.””
“How did Noah find this?””
Daniel looked down.
“Because Ellis made one mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“He underestimated his son.””
I stared at the papers.
“Noah told me he chose Ellis because I couldn’t give him a future.””
Daniel looked at me sadly.
“He was repeating something Ellis told him.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Ellis spent months convincing Noah that staying with you would ruin his life.””
I felt tears burning my eyes.
“He told him that?””
“Yes.””
The coffee shop suddenly became too loud.
Every conversation around me faded.
I remembered Noah’s face during the hearing.
Not cold.
Not cruel.
Terrified.
“Why didn’t he tell me?””
Daniel looked at the window.
“Because Ellis threatened him.””
My fingers went numb.
“With what?””
“He said if Noah exposed the truth, Ellis would make sure you lost custody permanently.””
I closed my eyes.
My son had sacrificed his own feelings to protect me.
A twelve-year-old child.
Protecting his mother.
I whispered, “He must have been so scared.””
Daniel nodded.
“He was.””
I looked back at the folder.
“What exactly is on these files?””
“Enough to destroy Ellis.””
“Then why hasn’t he been arrested?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Because we need the original evidence.””
“The copies aren’t enough?””
“No. Ellis knows how to make things disappear.””
I thought about the lawyer appearing at my apartment.
The photograph.
The warning.
“He’s already looking.””
Daniel nodded.
“And he knows Noah took something.””
My phone suddenly vibrated.
I grabbed it.
A message.
From Noah.
*Mom, I need you to promise me something.*
I immediately replied.
*Anything.*
Three dots appeared.
Then disappeared.
Then appeared again.
Finally:
*Don’t tell Dad you know the truth.*
I frowned.
Another message arrived.
*He’s watching my phone.*
My blood ran cold.
I typed:
*Where are you? Are you safe?*
No response.
One minute.
Two minutes.
Five minutes.
Then my phone rang.
Not Noah.
Ellis.
I stared at his name.
Daniel saw it.
“Don’t answer.””
But I did.
Because I needed to hear his voice.
“Sabrina.””
His tone was calm.
Too calm.
“What do you want?””
A small laugh.
“You always were emotional.””
My jaw tightened.
“Where is Noah?””
“He’s fine.””
“Let me speak to him.””
A pause.
Then Ellis said:
“That’s interesting.””
“What?””
“You sound like you know something.””
I stopped breathing.
The silence between us became dangerous.
Ellis continued.
“Did my son give you something at the airport?””
I looked at Daniel.
He shook his head.
Don’t answer.
But Ellis already knew.
“I’ll give you one chance, Sabrina.””
My hand trembled.
“One chance for what?””
“To return what belongs to me.””
Then his voice became colder.
“Because if you don’t, you won’t just lose Noah.””
A pause.
“You’ll lose the only person who has been protecting you.””
The call ended.
And at that exact moment, Daniel’s phone lit up.
His face changed when he saw the message.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“Sabrina…”
“What happened?””
He turned the screen toward me.
It was a news alert.
*Former Carter Technologies Investigator Daniel Reeves Found Dead After Reported Accident.*
I stared at the headline.
Because Daniel was sitting right in front of me.
Alive.
May you like
Which meant one thing.
Someone had just announced his death before they could kill him.
