Chapter 2: The Secret Hidden in His Pocket

I forgot how to breathe.

For seven days, I had convinced myself that my son no longer needed me.

That maybe Ellis had been right.

Maybe money had won.

Maybe love wasn’t enough.

But then Noah ran across the airport floor and crashed into my arms.

“Mom.””

That one word nearly destroyed me.

I wrapped my arms around him so tightly I was afraid I would never let go.

His jacket smelled like the laundry detergent I used when he was little.

For a moment, everything disappeared.

The courtroom.

The judge.

Ellis’s cruel smile.

All of it.

I was just a mother holding her child.

“You came,” Noah whispered.

I pulled back and touched his face.

“Of course I came.””

His eyes were red.

Not from crying.

From trying not to cry.

“Mom, I’m sorry.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

He looked around quickly.

The airport was crowded, but his eyes kept moving toward Ellis.

Like he was afraid someone was watching.

“I wanted to tell you something,” he whispered.

I held his hands.

“Tell me.””

But before he could answer, Ellis called from behind him.

“Noah.””

My son immediately stepped back.

The change was instant.

The brave boy in front of me disappeared.

He became the quiet child from the courtroom.

Ellis approached us with his phone in his hand.

“You need to go through security.””

Noah nodded.

I looked at Ellis.

“Can I have five minutes with my son?””

Ellis smiled coldly.

“You already had your goodbye.””

Something inside me broke again.

Noah looked down.

Then he stepped closer.

“Mom.””

His voice was barely audible.

“Don’t cry.””

I forced a smile.

“I’m okay.””

He shook his head.

“No, you’re not.””

Then he hugged me again.

But this hug was different.

It wasn’t just goodbye.

It felt like a warning.

His hand moved behind my back.

I felt something hard slide into the inside pocket of my coat.

A small object.

Cold.

Heavy.

I looked at him in confusion.

“What did you—”

“Wait for me,” he whispered.

My entire body froze.

Before I could ask anything else, Noah pulled away.

He looked at me for one second.

A single second.

And in that second, I saw the little boy who used to crawl into my bed during thunderstorms.

Then he turned around.

And walked away.

I stood there watching him disappear behind the security line.

Ellis never looked back.

The taxi ride home felt unreal.

The city lights blurred through the window as I reached into my coat pocket.

My fingers touched the object.

I pulled it out.

A black card.

No logo.

No bank name.

No numbers printed on the front.

Just a smooth black surface.

My first thought was that it was some kind of mistake.

Then my phone chimed.

Unknown number.

I stared at the screen.

A message appeared.

*Mom. Don’t panic. Please listen.*

My hands started shaking.

Another message appeared.

*There is $6,000,000 connected to this card.*

I stopped breathing.

The next message came.

*The PIN is your birthday. Don’t trust anyone. Not Dad. Not his lawyer.*

I stared at those words until they became blurry.

No.

Impossible.

Noah was twelve.

A child.

How could he have access to six million dollars?

I typed back immediately.

*Noah, what is happening? Call me.*

The message showed as sent.

No response.

I called.

Straight to voicemail.

My stomach twisted.

The driver looked at me through the mirror.

“Ma’am, are you okay?””

I quickly locked my phone.

“Yes.””

But my voice didn’t sound convincing.

When I arrived at my apartment, I didn’t even take off my coat.

I sat at the kitchen table and placed the black card in front of me.

A card worth six million dollars.

A message telling me not to trust my ex-husband.

And a son who had just publicly rejected me in court.

None of it made sense.

I opened my laptop and searched for information about Ellis Carter.

At first, everything looked normal.

Successful businessman.

Charity events.

Magazine interviews.

A respected public image.

Then I found something strange.

An old article from three years earlier.

The headline made my hands go numb.

*“Carter Technologies Founder Accused of Hiding Company Assets During Divorce Investigation.””*

I clicked.

The article had been removed.

Only a cached copy remained.

And at the bottom was a name I had never heard before.

A financial investigator.

The same person who had apparently discovered Ellis’s hidden accounts.

The same person who disappeared shortly afterward.

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

I stared at it.

Then answered.

A man’s voice spoke quietly.

“Sabrina Carter?””

“Yes. Who is this?””

There was a pause.

May you like

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“I know what your son did at the airport.””
