Chapter 10: The File My Father Left Behind

I read the document three times.

Then a fourth.

The words refused to make sense.

My father had known.

Not just about Ellis’s money.

Not just about his ambition.

He had known the exact kind of man Ellis would become.

I looked at Noah sitting beside me in the police station waiting room.

His face was exhausted.

But underneath the exhaustion was something else.

Relief.

For the first time in weeks, he wasn’t pretending.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”” I whispered.

Noah looked down.

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Every time Dad was around.””

My chest tightened.

“Why didn’t you send me a message?””

“I did.””

He swallowed.

“But Dad checked my phone.””

I felt anger rising.

“He checked your phone?””

Noah nodded.

“He said it was because he wanted to protect me.””

The bitterness in his voice broke my heart.

A twelve-year-old shouldn’t understand manipulation this well.

A police officer walked past us, giving us privacy.

Noah leaned closer.

“Mom, there’s something else.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“The money.””

I held the document.

“What about it?””

“It’s not just an inheritance.””

My forehead creased.

“What do you mean?””

Noah looked around before speaking.

“Grandpa created it as a protection fund.””

“For what?””

“For Dad.””

The words landed like a stone.

My father had prepared for Ellis before I even knew I was in danger.

Noah continued.

“Grandpa knew Dad was using the company to hide things.””

I stared at him.

“How did you find all this?””

He hesitated.

“Because Dad kept everything.””

“That doesn’t sound like him.””

“No.””

Noah shook his head.

“Dad thought nobody would ever challenge him.””

That sounded exactly like Ellis.

For years, his confidence had come from one belief.

That everyone was weaker than him.

I looked at the document again.

“What else did you find?””

Noah reached into his backpack.

My heart jumped.

“Where did you get that?””

“Before I left.””

He pulled out a small flash drive.

“This.””

Daniel immediately walked over when he saw it.

“What is that?””

Noah handed it to him.

“The original files.””

Daniel stared.

“Are you sure?””

Noah nodded.

“Dad kept a backup hidden in his office.””

Daniel looked at me.

“This could prove everything.””

Noah’s face changed.

“But there’s something you need to know.””

“What?””

He looked terrified again.

“Dad wasn’t working alone.””

The room went quiet.

Daniel slowly lowered the flash drive.

“What do you mean?””

Noah looked at me.

“There was another person.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Noah shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

“Then how do you know?””

“Because Dad talked to them.””

“When?””

“After the court hearing.””

I remembered that day.

Ellis’s confidence.

His smile.

His certainty.

He hadn’t just been celebrating.

He had been reporting.

Noah continued.

“I heard him say, ‘The mother is no longer a problem. The boy will cooperate.’”

My hands curled.

“He said that?””

Noah nodded.

“I knew then he never wanted custody because he loved me.””

The pain in his eyes almost destroyed me.

“He wanted control.””

I pulled him into my arms.

“I’m sorry.””

He shook his head.

“No, Mom.””

His voice broke.

“I’m sorry I made you think I didn’t love you.””

That was the sentence I had been waiting for since the courtroom.

Not because I needed an apology.

Because I needed my son to know I never stopped believing in him.

“I knew,” I whispered.

He looked at me.

“I didn’t know how. But I knew.””

A door opened.

Daniel stepped back from the computer.

His face was pale.

“What?””

He turned the screen toward us.

The files had opened.

There were thousands of documents.

Financial records.

Emails.

Contracts.

Then one folder appeared.

Created five days before the custody hearing.

The title was simple.

*PROJECT RESET*

I clicked it.

Inside was a single document.

The first line made my blood run cold.

*Objective: Remove Sabrina Carter from all legal and financial control.*

I scrolled.

The next line was worse.

*Phase One: Destroy credibility.*

*Phase Two: Gain custody of Noah Carter.*

*Phase Three: Acquire inheritance assets.*

I couldn’t breathe.

This wasn’t a divorce.

It was a plan.

A plan that had started long before Ellis left me.

Daniel pointed at the screen.

“There’s more.””

At the bottom of the file was a signature.

Not Ellis’s.

Someone else’s.

I stared at the name.

Because I knew it.

Everyone in our city knew it.

The person who signed the document wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone who had sat beside Ellis in court.

Someone who had helped him take my son away.

My lawyer looked at the screen.

Then whispered:

“Your attorney?””

No.

Not mine.

May you like

Ellis’s.

And the person who had built the entire case against me was the same person who had been secretly working with him from the beginning.
