Chapter 19: The Last Lie My Father Hid
The screen went black.
But the name remained in my mind.
Claire.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The room was filled with the kind of silence that comes after something breaks beyond repair.
I had spent weeks discovering betrayal.
Ellis.
Whitmore.
Victor.
But Claire was different.
Because enemies are expected to hurt you.
Friends are supposed to protect you.
Noah looked at me carefully.
“Mom…”
I couldn’t answer.
I wanted to believe the video was wrong.
I wanted to believe my father had made a mistake.
I wanted there to be some explanation that would save the person who had held my hand through my darkest moments.
But then I remembered.
Claire knew too much.
She knew where I lived.
She knew about the inheritance.
She knew about the documents.
She knew exactly when to send the photograph.
She hadn’t been discovering the truth.
She had been controlling the timing.
Daniel replayed the video.
This time, he watched every second.
Then he froze.
“Wait.””
“What?””
He pointed at the screen.
“Your father wasn’t looking at the camera.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“He was looking at someone.””
Daniel paused the video.
Behind my father was a reflection in a glass cabinet.
A person standing in the room.
I leaned closer.
The image was blurry.
But there was something familiar.
A necklace.
A small silver necklace.
My stomach dropped.
Claire wore that necklace every day.
“No.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Sabrina.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“She was there when he recorded this?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
My phone rang.
Claire.
I stared at the screen.
Then answered.
“What did you do?””
Silence.
Not denial.
Not surprise.
Just silence.
Finally, Claire spoke.
“I was hoping you’d never see that video.””
My eyes burned.
“Why?””
“Because I knew you’d hate me.””
“You betrayed me.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
“Why?””
Claire breathed out.
“Because your father ruined my family.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“No.””
I stood.
“My father helped your father.””
“After he took everything from him.””
The anger in her voice surprised me.
“Claire, tell me the truth.””
“I am.””
“Then why were you working with Ellis?””
A pause.
“Because Ellis had access.””
“To what?””
“To the files.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What files?””
Claire answered.
“The ones your father hid.””
My heart tightened.
“You mean the inheritance?””
“No.””
Her voice became quieter.
“The reason your father really created it.””
I gripped the phone.
“Explain.””
Claire hesitated.
Then said:
“Your father didn’t create the trust to protect money.””
“Then what?””
“He created it to expose the truth.””
A chill moved through me.
“About what?””
“About the night he died.””
I stopped breathing.
My father’s death.
A car accident.
That was what everyone told me.
An accident.
Claire continued.
“Your father knew Victor was dangerous.””
“Then why didn’t he go to the police?””
“Because he didn’t trust the police.””
“Why?””
“Because someone inside the investigation was working with Victor.””
I felt sick.
“Who?””
Claire didn’t answer.
Instead, she said:
“Sabrina, you need to listen carefully.””
I waited.
“Victor is not after the money.””
“Then what does he want?””
“He wants the evidence destroyed.””
“What evidence?””
“The evidence proving your father was murdered.””
The room went silent.
Noah’s face changed.
“My grandfather?””
I looked at him.
Claire heard him.
“Is Noah with you?””
“Yes.””
Another pause.
Then Claire whispered:
“Then it’s already too late.””
“What?””
A sound came through the phone.
A door closing.
Then Claire said:
“I’m sorry.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Then Daniel’s computer made a noise.
An incoming file.
From Claire.
Daniel opened it.
A video appeared.
Claire was sitting alone in a dark room.
Her face was exhausted.
Not like a villain.
Like someone who had lost a war inside herself.
She looked into the camera.
“Sabrina, if you’re watching this, I’m probably already gone.””
Noah moved closer.
Claire continued.
“I spent years believing revenge would fix what happened.””
She looked down.
“It didn’t.””
Then she whispered:
“Victor killed your father.””
I felt tears rise.
“But the person who helped him…”
She paused.
“The person who opened the door for him…”
The video glitched.
Then Claire looked directly at the camera.
“It was me.””
Noah covered his mouth.
Daniel stared.
Claire continued:
“I thought your father deserved punishment.””
Her voice broke.
“I didn’t know Victor would take everything.””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then my phone buzzed.
A final message.
From Claire.
*I left you the location of the original evidence.*
Then another.
*Please find it before Victor does.*
And the last message:
*I’m sorry, Sabrina. I should have protected you.*
I looked at Noah.
Then at Daniel.
The truth was finally visible.
But one question remained.
Where was Claire now?
May you like
And was she running from Victor…
or was she running from us?
