Chapter 7: The Betrayal Nobody Expected
The room felt smaller after we saw the signature.
I stared at the document in my hands, waiting for someone to explain.
Waiting for someone to tell me there was a mistake.
A misunderstanding.
Anything.
But nobody spoke.
Nathan looked at his father.
“Dad?””
Robert didn’t move.
His face had gone pale.
“I can explain.””
Nathan laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“That’s what everyone says after they get caught.””
Robert lowered his eyes.
I watched the man who had always seemed calm and kind suddenly look like someone carrying a secret too heavy to hold.
“Why?”” Nathan asked.
Robert looked at Isabella.
Then back at his son.
“I didn’t cancel the wedding.””
I frowned.
“But your signature is right there.””
“I signed the form.””
Nathan stepped forward.
“Why?””
Robert took a breath.
“Because your mother told me she was making a small adjustment.””
Isabella rolled her eyes.
“Don’t act innocent now.””
Nathan turned toward her.
“You knew?””
She shrugged.
“Of course I knew.””
My chest tightened.
“You both knew?””
Isabella crossed her arms.
“Your father was trying to protect the family.””
I stared at her.
“By almost canceling my wedding?””
She looked annoyed.
“You’re making it sound worse than it was.””
Nathan’s voice became dangerously quiet.
“How could it possibly sound worse?””
Nobody answered.
Robert sat down heavily.
“I never wanted this.””
Nathan looked at him.
“But you allowed it.””
Robert didn’t argue.
That hurt Nathan more than a lie would have.
I could see it.
His entire understanding of his family was collapsing.
“I need the truth,” Nathan said.
Robert rubbed his face.
“Your mother was convinced that if she didn’t stop things, she would lose you.””
Nathan shook his head.
“I was getting married. Not disappearing.””
Robert looked at him.
“She didn’t see the difference.””
The words hung in the air.
I thought about Isabella’s comments.
Her anger.
Her obsession with being included.
She wasn’t afraid of losing Nathan.
She was afraid of no longer controlling him.
Nathan picked up the document again.
“What exactly was supposed to happen?””
Robert hesitated.
That hesitation made my stomach turn.
“Dad.””
Robert finally spoke.
“Your mother wanted the wedding delayed.””
“Delayed?””
“She thought if there was enough conflict, you would reconsider.””
Nathan stared at him.
“So she tried to ruin our wedding?””
Robert looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
I felt something inside me crack.
All those months.
All the stress.
All the moments I questioned whether I was overreacting.
She had been planning this.
Nathan turned toward Isabella.
“You tried to break us apart.””
She looked offended.
“I tried to save you.””
“From what?””
She looked at me.
“From making the biggest mistake of your life.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
I stepped closer.
“You don’t even know me.””
She smiled coldly.
“I know enough.””
“No. You know the version of me you created in your head.””
For the first time, Isabella looked surprised.
I continued.
“You decided I was your enemy before I ever had a chance.””
Her expression hardened.
“Because I saw what was happening.””
“What?””
“You were taking him away.””
Nathan closed his eyes.
“Mom.””
She ignored him.
“You changed him.””
I looked at Nathan.
Then back at her.
“No. I didn’t change him.””
I pointed toward the documents.
“He finally changed when he saw the truth.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Nathan’s phone rang.
He looked down.
The name on the screen made his expression shift.
It was the wedding coordinator.
He answered.
“Hello?””
He listened.
Then his face became serious.
“What do you mean there’s another issue?””
A pause.
“Who requested that?””
His eyes moved toward me.
“No.””
I felt a chill.
“What happened?””
Nathan slowly lowered the phone.
“The venue found another request.””
Robert stood.
“What request?””
Nathan looked at the paper on the table.
Then at me.
“Someone tried to remove your mother from the wedding photos.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Nathan looked confused.
“The photographer received instructions not to include her in the official album.””
I stared at him.
“Who sent them?””
Nathan looked at the message on his phone.
May you like
His voice was barely above a whisper.
“It came from Isabella’s email.””
