Chapter 15: The Trap They Built

The words stayed with me.

A trap.

That was what Isabella and her accomplices had planned.

Not just embarrassment.

Not just a ruined dress.

A collapse.

They wanted Nathan to doubt me.

To question my intentions.

To believe I was the problem.

For the first time, I understood the full picture.

The dress was never the goal.

It was the opening move.

Nathan sat across from Claire, completely still.

“How?””

Claire looked down.

“They wanted to create a story.””

“What story?””

“That your wife married you for security.””

I felt sick.

Nathan’s expression turned cold.

“Why?””

Claire answered quietly.

“Because your mother believed you were making a mistake.””

“That doesn’t explain destroying my marriage.””

“No.””

Claire looked at him.

“It explains why she convinced herself she was saving you.””

I hated that sentence.

Because it was always the same.

Every cruel action came wrapped in a false excuse.

Love.

Protection.

Family.

Nathan looked at Claire.

“And what were you supposed to do?””

She started crying.

“I was supposed to help.””

The honesty hurt.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“You helped her.””

“Yes.””

“Then why should we believe anything you say now?””

Claire wiped her face.

“Because I finally realized she didn’t just hurt you.””

She looked at me.

“She hurt everyone around her.””

I didn’t respond.

Because that was true.

Even Claire.

Especially Claire.

Nathan stood.

“We’re done.””

Claire looked up.

“Please.””

He paused.

Not because he forgave her.

Because he was listening.

“I know I don’t deserve your trust.””

She reached into her bag.

“But I can give you the evidence.””

She handed him another envelope.

Inside were copies of messages.

Emails.

Financial transfers.

A complete timeline.

Nathan looked through them.

Then stopped.

“What?””

He handed me one page.

It was an email.

From Isabella.

To Nathan’s uncle.

The subject line was:

*Operation Family First.*

I almost laughed at how cruelly simple it sounded.

Nathan read the first sentence.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

I looked at him.

He handed me the paper.

The message said:

*If Nathan refuses to listen, we will make sure he sees who she really is.*

I kept reading.

The plan involved fake messages.

Manipulated conversations.

Even creating a false rumor about me.

My hands shook.

“They were going to frame me.””

Nathan nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Claire whispered:

“And there’s one more thing.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She pointed to the bottom of the email.

A name.

Someone who approved the plan.

Someone who had been silent through everything.

Someone we never expected.

My breath caught.

Nathan read it.

Then slowly sat down.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He stared at the signature.

“It can’t be.””

The name at the bottom belonged to the person who had spent months pretending to protect us.

The person who claimed to hate conflict.

The person who claimed he wanted peace.

Robert.

Nathan’s father.

May you like

And beneath his signature was one final line.

*When the marriage ends, Nathan will finally come home.*
