Chapter 2: The Sound of Lace Breaking

The ceremony was everything I had dreamed of.

The flowers were beautiful. The sunlight streamed through the windows of the old chapel. My father walked me down the aisle with tears in his eyes.

And when I saw Nathan waiting for me, every stressful moment disappeared.

He looked at me like I was the only person in the room.

When I reached him, he whispered, “You’re incredible.””

I smiled.

“You’re not supposed to make me cry before the vows.””

He laughed softly.

“I’ll try to behave.””

For a few hours, I believed nothing could touch us.

Even Isabella seemed different.

She hugged me after the ceremony.

“You look lovely,” she said.

The words sounded rehearsed.

But I accepted them.

I wanted to believe we were starting over.

During the reception, everyone danced. My mother sat at our table, laughing with relatives she hadn’t seen in months.

Watching her smile was the greatest gift I could have received.

Then came the moment everything changed.

The DJ announced that Nathan and I would have our first dance as husband and wife.

The room cheered.

I stood up, feeling the weight of my dress behind me. The lace train stretched across the floor, glowing under the lights.

Nathan took my hand.

“Ready?””

I nodded.

“Always.””

We moved slowly across the dance floor.

Then I felt it.

A sudden pull.

At first, I thought I had stepped on my own dress.

Then came the sound.

A loud, sharp rip.

The entire room froze.

I stumbled backward.

Nathan caught me immediately.

“What happened?””

I looked down.

My beautiful lace train was torn.

Not slightly.

Completely damaged.

The room filled with whispers.

My face went hot.

“No…”

My voice barely came out.

“No, no, no…”

Then Isabella appeared beside me.

Her eyes widened dramatically.

“Oh my goodness.””

She covered her mouth.

“I didn’t see it.””

I looked at her.

My heart sank.

Her heel was still near the torn lace.

Nathan noticed too.

“Mom?””

Isabella stepped back quickly.

“I swear, it was an accident.””

I stared at my dress.

The same dress my mother had carefully chosen with me.

The same dress she had touched with shaking hands.

The same dress she had cried over.

Isabella sighed.

“Well, I did warn you that train was too long.””

The words hit harder than the tear itself.

My mother, sitting nearby, looked confused.

“Nobody warned her about ruining it,” she said quietly.

The room became painfully silent.

Isabella looked offended.

“Excuse me?””

My mother looked directly at her.

“I said what I said.””

Nathan took my arm.

“Come on. Let’s get you to the bridal suite.””

I walked away trying not to cry.

But the second the door closed behind me, I broke.

“I can’t believe this.””

Nathan wrapped his arms around me.

“I’m sorry.””

“She knew.””

He pulled back.

“What?””

“She knew where my dress was.””

Nathan shook his head.

“Maybe it really was an accident.””

I looked at him.

“Do you believe that?””

He didn’t answer.

That hurt more than anything.

A few minutes later, there was a knock.

It was our photographer, Emily.

She looked nervous.

“Can I come in?””

Nathan opened the door.

“Is everything okay?””

Emily held her camera tightly.

“I need to show you something.””

She looked at me.

“I wasn’t sure if I should interrupt, but… I think you need to see this.””

She lifted the camera.

“I take candid photos throughout the reception. A few seconds before the tear happened, I captured something.””

Nathan stepped closer.

Emily clicked through the images.

The first photo showed me laughing with him.

The second showed Isabella standing behind me.

The third made my stomach drop.

Isabella was looking down at my dress.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Looking directly at it.

Nathan leaned closer.

Emily clicked again.

In the next photo, Isabella’s foot was lifted.

Hovering directly above the lace train.

And her face…

Her face showed a small, cruel smile.

The room went completely silent.

Nathan stared at the camera screen.

His expression changed.

Not anger.

Something colder.

Disbelief.

“Stay here,” he whispered.

I grabbed his hand.

“Nathan.””

He looked at me.

“I need to ask my mother something.””

Then he walked toward the door.

And for the first time since I met him, I saw something in his eyes I had never seen before.

He wasn’t trying to keep the peace.
