Chapter 16: The Father’s Confession
Nathan didn’t speak for almost a minute.
He just stared at the signature.
Robert.
His father.
The man who had sat across from us looking ashamed.
The man who said he wanted the truth.
The man who claimed he had been trapped by Isabella’s behavior.
The man who had acted like another victim.
But the signature was right there.
His name.
His handwriting.
His choice.
“Nathan,” I whispered.
He didn’t move.
Claire looked terrified.
“I’m sorry.””
Nathan finally looked up.
“Did you know?””
Claire shook her head immediately.
“No.””
“When did you find this?””
“After the wedding.””
“And you waited?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was scared.””
Nathan stood.
“You were scared.””
His voice wasn’t loud.
That made it worse.
“Everyone was scared.””
He looked around the café.
“My mother was scared of losing control. My father was scared of my mother. You were scared of telling the truth.””
He looked at me.
“And my wife was the only person who was honest from the beginning.””
I reached for his hand.
He held it.
Not tightly.
Like he needed to remind himself I was there.
“We need to talk to him,” Nathan said.
Claire nodded.
“I understand.””
Nathan looked at her.
“One question.””
She waited.
“Why did you keep helping them?””
Claire looked down.
“Because I grew up watching everyone forgive your mother.””
She swallowed.
“I thought that was what family meant.””
The words stayed with me.
Because I knew what she meant.
Some families didn’t fix problems.
They just buried them.
We left the café and drove straight to Robert’s house.
This time, Nathan didn’t hesitate before knocking.
Robert opened the door.
The moment he saw our faces, he knew.
His expression collapsed.
“You found it.””
Nathan stared at him.
“You knew.””
Robert closed his eyes.
“Come inside.””
“No.””
Nathan’s voice stopped him.
“You don’t get to invite us into another room and explain this away.””
Robert looked down.
“I was hoping you would never see that.””
I felt anger rise.
“Because it was wrong?””
Robert looked at me.
“Because I was ashamed.””
Nathan laughed bitterly.
“Interesting.””
“What?””
“You were ashamed after you got caught.””
Robert flinched.
“I made a terrible decision.””
“No.””
Nathan stepped closer.
“You made many decisions.””
The silence was painful.
Robert nodded slowly.
“You’re right.””
I wasn’t prepared for that.
Neither was Nathan.
“You’re admitting it?””
“Yes.””
Robert walked into the living room.
He sat down.
“I thought I was protecting my family.””
Nathan shook his head.
“You were protecting your comfort.””
Robert looked away.
“That’s fair.””
I stared at him.
The worst part was that he wasn’t defending himself anymore.
He looked broken.
But broken people could still cause damage.
“What exactly was the plan?”” Nathan asked.
Robert took a deep breath.
“Your mother believed you would regret marrying someone she thought was changing your life.””
“So she wanted us to fail.””
“Yes.””
“And you agreed.””
Robert looked at his son.
“I convinced myself it would never go that far.””
Nathan’s expression hardened.
“That’s what everyone says.””
Robert nodded.
“I know.””
He stood and walked to a cabinet.
He pulled out an old notebook.
“I wrote everything down.””
Nathan looked suspicious.
“Why?””
“Because somewhere inside, I knew what we were doing was wrong.””
He handed it over.
Nathan opened it.
Page after page.
Dates.
Conversations.
Notes.
Proof.
Robert had documented everything.
The arguments.
The plans.
The pressure.
The moments he should have stopped it.
I read one line.
*Isabella believes fear will bring Nathan back. I know fear only destroys.*
I looked at Robert.
“Then why didn’t you stop her?””
His eyes filled.
“Because I was afraid of losing my marriage.””
Nathan looked at him.
“And I was supposed to lose mine?””
Robert had no answer.
Then his phone rang.
He checked the screen.
His face changed.
“What?””
Nathan noticed.
“Who is it?””
Robert didn’t respond.
Nathan took the phone from his hand.
The caller ID showed a name.
Isabella.
Nathan answered.
“Mom?””
Silence.
Then Isabella’s voice came through.
“Nathan.””
He put it on speaker.
“What do you want?””
Her voice shook.
“I need you to listen.””
Nathan looked at the notebook.
“You’ve had enough chances.””
“No.””
A pause.
“I made a mistake.””
I almost laughed.
Another mistake.
“I know about your father.””
Nathan froze.
“What?””
Isabella continued.
“I know what he did.””
Robert looked terrified.
Nathan’s voice became cold.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Silence.
Then Isabella said:
“Because I wasn’t the only person who wanted your marriage to end.””
My stomach dropped.
Nathan stared at the phone.
“What does that mean?””
Isabella whispered:
“Your father had a reason for wanting you separated.””
May you like
The call ended.
And for the first time, Robert looked truly afraid.
