Chapter 18: The Guest Who Knew Too Much

The attorney’s office was colder than I expected.

Maybe because I knew what we were walking into.

Another betrayal.

Another person who smiled at us while hiding something.

Nathan sat beside me.

His hand rested over mine.

A small reminder.

We were facing this together.

The attorney placed a folder on the table.

“I reviewed everything you provided.””

Nathan nodded.

“And?””

The attorney looked serious.

“The situation is more complicated than we originally thought.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

He opened the folder.

“Because someone else helped manipulate events at the wedding.””

Nathan leaned forward.

“Who?””

The attorney slid a photograph across the table.

A wedding guest.

Someone smiling beside the flowers.

Someone holding a champagne glass.

I recognized him immediately.

Nathan’s uncle.

The same person from the recording.

I felt numb.

“He was there.””

“Yes,” the attorney said.

“And he wasn’t just involved afterward.””

Nathan stared at the photo.

“He was involved before.””

The attorney nodded.

“He helped create the false narrative about your wife.””

I looked at Nathan.

“How?””

The attorney explained.

“He spread rumors among family members before the wedding.””

“What kind of rumors?””

“That you were rushing into marriage.””

“That your wife was isolating you.””

“That your wife’s family had financial issues.””

I felt my chest tighten.

The same lies.

Repeated until they sounded like truth.

Nathan closed his eyes.

“Why?””

The attorney looked at the documents.

“Because your uncle had a financial interest.””

Another one.

Another person who saw our marriage as an opportunity.

“How?””

The attorney turned the page.

“He owed your father money.””

Nathan stared.

“So he helped him.””

“Yes.””

I looked down.

The pattern was clear.

Everyone had an excuse.

Everyone had a reason.

But the result was always the same.

They hurt us.

The attorney continued.

“There is one more thing.””

Nathan looked up.

“What?””

“He contacted the wedding photographer.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He attempted to convince her not to release certain photos.””

My heart stopped.

“The photos of Isabella’s foot?””

The attorney nodded.

“Yes.””

Nathan’s jaw tightened.

“So if she hadn’t shown us…”

“We may never have known.””

The room went silent.

The entire truth rested on one person choosing honesty.

One person pressing send.

One person refusing to participate.

The attorney closed the folder.

“My recommendation is that you prepare for a formal dispute.””

Nathan nodded.

“We will.””

On the drive home, neither of us spoke.

Finally, I said:

“Do you ever regret marrying me?””

Nathan immediately looked at me.

“No.””

The answer was instant.

“I regret not protecting you sooner.””

I looked out the window.

“You lost your family.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

He took my hand.

“I lost the version of them I believed existed.””

That was different.

And maybe healthier.

A few days later, we received an unexpected invitation.

From Isabella.

She wanted everyone together.

Nathan.

Robert.

His uncle.

And us.

I didn’t want to go.

But Nathan did.

“Why?””

“Because I want everything said in one room.””

So we went.

The atmosphere was tense.

His uncle arrived last.

He looked uncomfortable.

Isabella sat across from him.

For once, she wasn’t controlling the room.

She was waiting.

Nathan placed the evidence on the table.

“No more lies.””

His uncle looked away.

Robert said quietly:

“It’s time.””

His uncle sighed.

“I never thought it would go this far.””

Nathan stared.

“That’s what everyone says.””

The man looked at me.

“I never wanted you hurt.””

I almost smiled.

“That doesn’t matter.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

Then Isabella reached into her bag.

She pulled out one final document.

“I found this in my brother’s things.””

Nathan frowned.

“Your brother?””

She nodded.

“The person who helped start all of this.””

She placed it on the table.

A handwritten agreement.

Signed years ago.

Nathan read it.

Then his face went completely still.

“What?””

I looked at him.

He whispered:

“This isn’t about the wedding.””

I leaned closer.

“What is it about?””

Nathan looked up.

May you like

“The inheritance.””

And suddenly, every betrayal finally had a reason.
