Chapter 2: The Girl Behind the Name
The room went silent the moment I entered.
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
The private artist lounge was exactly how I remembered it—soft lighting, expensive furniture, walls covered with photographs of legendary musicians.
Except tonight, my family was sitting in the middle of it like they belonged there.
Olivia was holding a champagne glass.
My father was leaning back on the couch.
And both of them looked like they had been caught stealing something.
The lead singer, Adrian Vale, turned toward me.
The disappointment on his face disappeared instantly.
“Maya.””
His entire expression softened.
Then he walked across the room and hugged me.
My father stood so quickly that the couch moved behind him.
“Maya?”” he whispered.
I stepped back from Adrian.
“Hi, Dad.””
His eyes moved from me to Adrian.
Then to the security staff standing outside the door.
Then back to me.
“What are you doing here?””
It was almost funny.
The same man who told me I didn’t belong was now standing in the room where everyone knew my name.
Before I could answer, Adrian looked at him.
“She’s here because this is her company.””
My father blinked.
“What?””
Adrian glanced around the room.
“She owns the label sponsoring this tour.””
The champagne glass slipped slightly in Olivia’s hand.
“No.””
Nobody spoke.
Then the glass fell.
It shattered against the floor.
Red liquid spread across the white carpet.
Olivia stared at me.
“You’re lying.””
I looked at her calmly.
“About what?””
“You?”” She laughed nervously.
“You can’t own anything.””
My father’s face had lost all color.
“Maya…”
I turned toward him.
For years, I had waited for him to see me.
Not as the quiet daughter who played piano in the corner.
Not as the child who needed permission to dream.
But as someone who had worked.
Someone who had built something.
Someone who had listened when Mom taught me everything she knew.
“You never asked what I was doing after school,” I said.
My father swallowed.
“I thought you were studying.””
“I was.””
I paused.
“And I was running a company.””
The room became quiet again.
Three years earlier, after Mom passed away, I discovered a folder hidden among her belongings. Inside were plans, contracts, and unfinished dreams.
She had wanted to create a label that protected new artists instead of exploiting them.
I finished what she started.
At first, nobody believed me.
A young woman with no famous last name didn’t scare the music industry.
So I stayed invisible.
I hired experts.
I learned every part of the business.
I built partnerships.
And tonight was supposed to be the celebration of the biggest tour my label had ever funded.
My father had no idea.
Because he never asked.
Adrian walked toward me.
“Your mother would have been proud.””
I smiled slightly.
“She would have told me not to hide forever.””
Adrian nodded.
“She would have been right.””
Olivia crossed her arms.
“So what? You own a company. That doesn’t mean you’re better than us.””
I looked at her.
“I never said I was.””
“Then why are you acting like this?””
I almost laughed.
“Because you’re sitting in my lounge, drinking champagne, after taking my ticket.””
My father looked away.
“I didn’t know.””
“No,” I said.
“You didn’t.””
That hurt him more than anger would have.
Because it was true.
He didn’t know.
He never tried to know.
A knock interrupted the silence.
The door opened.
My assistant, Claire, stepped inside holding a tablet.
“Maya, sorry to interrupt, but there’s a problem.””
I turned.
“What happened?””
She hesitated.
Then looked at my father and Olivia.
“The guest list has been altered.””
My stomach tightened.
“Altered how?””
Claire looked down at the tablet.
“Someone used your family access code to authorize additional VIP guests.””
My father frowned.
“Family access code?””
Claire looked confused.
“The code only belongs to you, Maya.””
Everyone looked at Olivia.
Her face changed.
Just slightly.
But I noticed.
“Olivia,” I said slowly.
She immediately shook her head.
“Don’t look at me.””
Claire continued scrolling.
“There’s more.””
“What?””
She looked up.
“The person who changed the list didn’t just add guests.””
A strange feeling moved through me.
“What did they do?””
Claire turned the tablet toward me.
My eyes froze on the screen.
Because the person who edited my VIP list had also accessed confidential files.
Files only three people in the world were allowed to open.
And one of those names was someone I trusted.
May you like
Claire whispered:
“Maya… someone has been trying to sell your mother’s unreleased music catalog.””
