Chapter 16: The Trap Behind the Arrest

I stared at the message until the screen went dark.

*If Adrian is arrested, you’ll never find the real traitor.*

The words repeated in my mind.

The real traitor.

Not Victor.

Not Olivia.

Not even my father.

Someone else.

Someone who had been close enough to my mother.

Close enough to manipulate everything.

I looked through the window as the police car disappeared into the night.

Adrian was gone.

The one person who had helped me understand my mother was now being painted as the villain.

And somehow, I knew that was exactly what someone wanted.

“Maya.””

My father’s voice pulled me back.

I turned.

For years, I wanted him to look at me like he was looking at me now.

Like I mattered.

Like losing me would break him.

But I wasn’t the same person who waited for his approval anymore.

“What?””

He hesitated.

“I’m sorry.””

I almost smiled.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was too late.

“You’ve said that a lot tonight.””

“I know.””

“And yet every apology comes after I discover another secret.””

He lowered his head.

“You’re right.””

That surprised me.

No argument.

No excuse.

Just acceptance.

Olivia sat quietly on the couch.

The confidence she had walked into the VIP lounge with was gone.

She looked smaller.

Younger.

But I couldn’t forget what she had done.

“What did Victor promise you?””

She looked up.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not true.””

She wiped her face.

“He said he could help me become someone.””

I stared.

“Someone?””

She nodded.

“He said I was always invisible because everyone compared me to you.””

My jaw tightened.

“He knew exactly what to say.””

“Yes.””

Her voice broke.

“I was jealous, Maya.””

The honesty caught me off guard.

“I hated how everyone talked about your mother. How everyone talked about you. I wanted one thing that was mine.””

“So you helped him steal from me?””

“I didn’t know what he wanted.””

“You accessed my mother’s files.””

“I thought they were business files.””

“Olivia.””

She looked down.

“I know.””

The room became quiet.

Then Claire walked over.

“Maya.””

“What?””

“I found something.””

She placed her tablet on the table.

“The complaint against Adrian.””

I looked.

“What about it?””

“The evidence file submitted to police.””

I scrolled.

My eyes narrowed.

The timestamps were wrong.

“Wait.””

Claire nodded.

“Exactly.””

“This file was created after Adrian was arrested.””

“Yes.””

My father frowned.

“So someone created fake evidence.””

“Not exactly.””

Claire zoomed in.

“The evidence itself is real.””

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

“It means someone took something Adrian actually had and rearranged the timeline.””

My heart raced.

Adrian wasn’t innocent because the evidence was fake.

He was innocent because someone had changed the story.

Someone wanted him blamed.

“Can we prove who?””

Claire hesitated.

“Maybe.””

She opened another file.

A security image appeared.

A person entering the archive room.

The image was blurry.

But clear enough.

A person holding a small device.

I leaned closer.

The person was wearing a black coat.

A baseball cap.

A face mostly hidden.

Then I noticed something.

The ring.

A silver ring on their hand.

My breath stopped.

I knew that ring.

I had seen it before.

Not on Victor.

Not on Olivia.

Not on my father.

On someone else.

Someone who had been helping me all night.

Someone who had stood beside me while pretending to search for the truth.

I whispered:

“No.””

Claire looked at me.

“What?””

I zoomed in.

The ring.

The hand.

The evidence.

Everything connected.

My father stepped closer.

“Maya?””

I looked at him.

“The person who framed Adrian…”

My voice shook.

“…was someone we trusted.””

A sound came from outside.

A car door closing.

Everyone turned.

Claire checked the cameras.

Her face changed.

“Maya.””

“What?””

“The person who just arrived…”

She swallowed.

“…is Adrian.””

I froze.

“That’s impossible.””

“He was taken away.””

The front door opened.

A figure stepped inside.

Not Adrian.

Someone else.

May you like

Someone holding Adrian’s phone.

And wearing the same silver ring.
