Chapter 13: The Man in My Mother’s Last Photograph

The photograph felt heavier than paper.

I stared at it again and again, hoping my eyes had misunderstood.

But there was no mistake.

My mother was standing outside the old studio.

Her face was serious.

Her hand was holding a folder.

And beside her was Adrian Vale.

The same man who had hugged me backstage.

The same man who told me my mother would have been proud.

The same man who had helped me rebuild her dream.

My chest tightened.

“Adrian.””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That silence hurt more than any denial.

“Tell me I’m wrong.””

His eyes moved from the photograph to me.

“Maya…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“Tell me why you’re in this picture.””

Everyone watched him.

Even Victor looked satisfied.

Like he had been waiting for this moment.

Adrian stepped closer.

“I can explain.””

I laughed quietly.

“That’s what everyone says when they have something to hide.””

His expression changed.

Pain.

Not anger.

Pain.

“I never wanted you to find out like this.””

“Find out what?””

“That I knew your mother.””

The words landed hard.

I looked at my father.

He looked away.

Another secret.

Another thing everyone knew except me.

“How long?””

Adrian took a breath.

“Before you were involved in the company.””

“How long?””

“Since I was twenty.””

I felt the room spinning.

“You knew my mother for years?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“I tried.””

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“You let me believe you were just helping me because you believed in my talent.””

“I did believe in your talent.””

“Then why hide this?””

Adrian looked at the photograph.

“Because your mother asked me to.””

The room went silent.

I froze.

“What?””

“She made me promise.””

My father looked at him.

“You never told me.””

Adrian looked back.

“Because Elena didn’t want you to know.””

My mother’s name sounded strange coming from him.

Too familiar.

“What was your relationship with her?””

He hesitated.

And that hesitation destroyed me.

Because hesitation was where secrets lived.

“She was my mentor.””

“That’s it?””

“Yes.””

I studied his face.

Trying to find a lie.

Trying to find anything.

But I saw something else.

Grief.

The same grief I carried.

Victor leaned against the wall.

“This is touching.””

Everyone turned toward him.

“But you’re missing the point.””

I looked at him.

“What point?””

He smiled.

“Adrian wasn’t just Elena’s student.””

Adrian’s face hardened.

“Stop.””

Victor ignored him.

“He was the person she trusted with the evidence.””

My heartbeat accelerated.

“What evidence?””

Adrian looked at me.

Then at Victor.

“This isn’t how she wanted you to learn.””

I stepped closer.

“Learn what?””

Adrian was quiet.

Then he reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

My father immediately recognized it.

“You kept it.””

Adrian nodded.

“For fifteen years.””

My hands went cold.

“What is that?””

Adrian looked at me.

“The final thing your mother gave me.””

I took the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

Not long.

Only a few lines.

But the handwriting was unmistakable.

*Adrian, if anything happens to me, protect Maya. Do not let her inherit my enemies before she is ready.*

I swallowed.

There was more.

*The person who betrayed me is someone we trusted.*

I looked up.

“Who?””

Adrian shook his head.

“I never knew.””

Victor smiled.

“Liar.””

Everyone looked at him.

Victor stepped closer.

“You knew exactly who it was.””

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“No.””

Victor laughed.

“Then why did Elena record your conversation?””

My body went cold.

“What conversation?””

Adrian looked shocked.

“I don’t know what he’s talking about.””

Victor smiled.

“Then maybe we should listen.””

He reached into his pocket.

And pulled out a small device.

A recording.

My mother’s voice came from it.

But this time, she wasn’t alone.

A man spoke.

A familiar voice.

My father’s voice.

And then my world changed.

May you like

Because the recording began with him saying:

“I know who is trying to destroy you, Elena.””
